  1. This was a pretty Fugly game all around. First of all it was a 4-2 8-1/2 game which came in at 3:09. The two teams combined to go 3-fer-20 w/RiSP [NYM = 1/10; FLA = 2/10] w/19 LOBsters combined. There were far too many freaking pitches (166 by the Mets), 9 combined walks, questionable strategies on both sides, ... and then there was the umpiring.
  2. And check it out ... another K w/2-outs and RiSP!!!
  3. Remember when replays were only going to be overturned in cases where there was 'clear and convincing' evidence? That's always been the selling point but it's never the case in practice. And as time has gone on it now seems that a 51%/49% guesstimate is enough for them to flip a call. Were it up to me I'd reject anything that even hinted at not being definitive which would have the added benefit of discouraging managers from challenging future ticky-tack calls.
  4. The average number of runs scored after loading the bases with no outs is around 2.5 That we're now semi-satisfied with the fact that we didn't get shut out there says a lot.

  7. I know this isn't quite in keeping with the mocking spirit of this thread, but I find the whole idea of the game being sponsored by (among others) OLD DOMINION FREIGHT LINES to be kind of odd. I mean, I know the theory behind this type of stuff is to introduce and familiarize the company's name with a wider audience with some vague hope that it'll pay off down the road ... but are the watchers and listeners (there are both between inning commercials and on-field signage) really saying to themselves; 'Y'know, I was just looking for a freight line so I could move a buncha stuff across country so maybe I should give these guys a call'? This one, plus those DOOSAN ads from the post-season over the past two years (Doosan is a South Korean heavy equipment manufacturer) seem to be an odd fit with sports. Whatever the motive, this kind of sponsorship certainly shows how far in the rear-view those days are when sports ads were strictly the province of male consumer product staples: beer, cigarettes, gasoline, and razor blades.
  8. I'm just saying that, in this game and this series in particular, a missed call could be the result of especially good/bad framing but more likely is the result of questionable B/S umping. There's certainly been enough evidence of the latter over the last 2-1/2 days.

The ump incorrectly called that pitch over the plate ball four because the Marlins catcher framed it poorly. Maybe, but either the TV 'box' and the actual strike zone are totally out of synch, or this crew has had a terrible series. There have been balls being called strikes, strikes winding up as balls and it's neither a big nor small zone just a totally inconsistent one.
  10. The Nats, now 4-7 on the season, lost their third straight overall and second straight to the Orioles, this one in painful fashion. They were in the midst of a combined two-hitter when they turned it over to the supposed strength of their bullpen -- Doolittle and Hudson -- to start the 8th Doolittle began the inning by serving up two HRs in his first four pitches before striking out Chris Davis (except that everyone strikes out Chris Davis). In came Hudson who quickly went: BB, 1B, 3R-HR before recording an out and the 3-0 Nats lead was now a 5-3 Baltimore lead, which was also the game's final score. btw, if any of you have the mighty trio of Pat Valaika, Pedro Severino, and Anthony Santander on your fantasy team, step up and collect your HR points. Yeah, I never heard of them either but they were your Baltimore sluggers from last night.
  11. Gary's implication was that the bowing story was a lot dirtier than that. "We have to wait until between innings to tell you Keith ... we're not on HBO"
  12. You can't get a GiDP and Still somehow manage to leave the bases loaded!!
  13. One third of the Yanqui games so far this season (5 of 15) have been shorter than 9 innings. They've played two Little League Double-Headers (PHI & TBR) plus had a rain-shortened six inning affair on opening day vs WAS.
  14. I think tonight's strike zone is more erratic than last night's.
  15. OK Larry David fans, a little info as to the joke about improper bowing?
  16. An actual 2-run rally after two were out and none on! That may be a first of the season for us ... even as we've given up our share.
  17. In anticipation of the strike in 1981 (he didn't even wait for it to actually happen) which, for all we knew, could have knocked out the entire season, Newsday columnist Joe Gergen decided to name his choice for 1981 MVP, that would be that year's Mini Valuable Player, at some point in late-May/early June. He also chose the Manager of the Months award as well as the Cy O'Nara winner. Ranking the best NYM for July 2020 has that same sort of feel.
  18. JD Davis makes Vincent pay the price [FIMG=100]https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BMjA1OTEyNzcyNl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwMTgwOTU2._V1_UY1200_CR167,0,630,1200_AL_.jpg[/FIMG]
  19. This has been one Fugly game so far (both teams and the HP ump) ... and there's still like two or three hours to go.
  20. Our defensive renaissance lasted exactly one game. In two consecutive plays we turned three outs into one.
  21. In what is certainly a sign of the times and particularly of this season, the Rays used six pitchers to 2-hit the Yanx tonight and win 1-0 Both team got just 2 hits and Tampa scored the game's lone run in the top of the 9th on a Walk, Walk, Passed Ball, Sac Fly On the other side of the coin, the Orioles knocked out 19 hits against Anibal Sanchez and the Nats for an 11-Zip win Former Met Tommy Milone and several relievers held the champs to 4 hits.
  22. Between the rain and the pitch counts (both sides) this one is going to take a while. Bottom of the 3rd and we're already closing in on an hour and a half.
  23. Is Wacha going to get ANY borderline calls tonight? There have been about 6-to-8 just-on/just-off pitches by him tonight and I don't think he's had a single one go his way so far.
  24. So the rookie in his debut K'd the side, although with an Alonso 2B mixed in. On the other hand he didn't figure to go long in this game anyway and the fact that it took him nearly 30 pitches to get through the frame likely shortened his outing by an inning. Wacha had already K'd the side in top one but managed to do so w/no hits and in a more reasonable 19 pitches.
