  1. Diaz - in the span of less than a week since his callup - has had a 2 HR game, a 3-K game, several GiDPs, plus a 9th inning check-swing groundout w/tieing run on 3rd and 1 out. And in his early season stint had a few weeks where he was hitting .400+, followed by several weeks of sub-.200 hitting.Isn't this the kind of feast/famine complaints that fans have about Cameron?
  2. While he's here I wouldn't mind seeing Jacobs get a start or two at 1st base. Maybe not Thursday w/the lefty Duke going but over the weekend assuming he's still here.
  3. Concussion, what concussion?(a statement which can be taken one of several ways)
  4. Trax has an option for '06 that would have kicked in via any one of a number of complicated incentives - except that now none of them are going to be reached because of the injury. So either the Mets pick up the option willingly (not sure if they can do that unilaterally) of he'll be a FA this winter.Last time I saw Fonzie play 2nd (last season some time) he was ridiculously immobile. I mean he actually looked embarrassingly bad out there.I personally think that ship has sailed.
  5. Jacobs is the callup and has just now arrived at the park.#27 for those of you keeping track of such things.I haven't heard on who was sent down since Piazza hasn't been DL'd at this point. One of the pitchers I assume.
  6. I realize that neither you nor the author were, but that was the incident several talk-radio losers used as an anti-Ice jumping off point that was briefly discussed in another thread.
  7. Yeah, that incident was the fuel for the fans who decided that Williams tanked the catch on purpose. Except that:- he didn't exactly "botch" the catch; he may not have looked like a ballerina in mid-leap there but that's a helluva play if he makes it- it's tough to assign blame for messing up a no-no when the next pitch goes over the fence!- it's so fuckin' stupid to believe that Gerald is thinking about this 5-year old incident while he's in a dead sprint and makes what's essentiallly a corrupt decision based on a personal hatred which nobody knows even exists
  8. ]It's funny--after the Manny on waivers thing last year, I got the impression that not many players got put on waivers. Keep in mind that the whole Boston/Ramirez thing (winter '03/'04) was:- a completely different type of waivers: those were IRrevocable as opposed to those that can be recalled, so that ANYONE daring to claim MR back then would have assumed his entire contract no questions asked!- at a completely different time in the season: there are different "waiver periods" at different times of the year- done for far different reasons: the Sox wanted someone to claim him - even knowing they'd get nothing in return - so they could get that contract off their books during the off-season while there were still options to spend it elsewhere. Essentially they decided that, although Manny's a great player, his contract was bloated and out-of-date and they could do better with the remaining (then) 5yrs x $20mil/per (something we oughta think about before trading players in addition to assuming his remaining 3x$20mil/yr)
  9. The Mets signed Soler to a 3-year deal IIRC, and I believe it was a ML deal to boot.None of which means that he's in any danger of becoming property of another team any time soon - he'll still be NYM property for 6 ML seasons - it's just that the Mets are burning time and money watching him pitch in essentially intra-squad exhibitions rather than against real competition. If it is a 'Major League' contract it also means that his "option" years are counting down as he runs in place. IOW, once he does finally get sprung, they'll have less time to keep him in the minors (assuming he'll need it) unless the Mets can somehow get some sort of special dispensation based on the circumstances.
  10. A couple of quickie comments from Baseball America's 'Hot List':Continuing to transform from a tools king to a complete baseball player, Lastings Milledge has improved his plate discipline at Double-A, leading (not surprisingly) to more hits and better power (.547 slugging in August).A physical doppelganger of Bartolo Colon, Yusmeiro Petit has recovered from a slow start in the Eastern League by going 3-0, 1.57 in three August starts while allowing just 11 hits in 23 innings. Petit's 118-18 strikeout-walk ratio is among the best in the minors.
  11. Newsday's Sunday sports section also had a list of (leaked and presumably - though not neccesarily - accurate) names of Mets & Yanx that had cleared waivers. I didn't save it but it's prolly in their archives if you want to dig.Thing is, it's not really all that important in most cases anyway.- So why put those names on waivers in the first place?Because they can and it don't cost nuthin'Because there's this idea that a player you do want to deal might get thru easier in a flood of names than all by hisself.Because it takes 72 hours to "clear" a name and it's best to "pre-clear" players so they can be dealt w/o delay in case a trade possibility pops up unexpectedly.- Why would Matsui be withdrawn?Either because someone in the org still believes his talent will surfaceOr, because he was claimed by a team he can block a trade to and therefore couldn't be lost- Would Piazza be told about clearing waivers? No, he [u:e8a1d71494]can't[/u:e8a1d71494] be told; not officially anyway. And he has no reason to care even if he did find out.
  12. ]The Zygomatic bone comprises the lateral wall and the temporal aspect of the orbital floor that supports the eye in the socket. ... If the fracture is small, such that no muscle entrapment resulting in a restriction of ocular motilities or an inferior displacement of the eye occurs then it is generally best to allow such breaks to heal naturally.I was just about to say exactly that!
  13. Benson - 5.5Floyd - 2.2Hernandez - 1.0Looper - 0.8Williams - 0.5
  14. Apparently it would be mostly a cosmetic procedure. I guess it just needs to be protected while teh break is still "fresh".
  15. Other Out-of-Town news:- Boston blows a late lead - then puts up a 7-spot in the 10th against Detroit. Tiggers counter w/a bottom 10 grand-slam (off Remlinger, not Schilling) but lose 10-7.- Rivera serves up a game-tieing, 2-out 9th inning HR to Eduardo Perez (his 2nd of the game). D-Rays threatening in the 11th ... and Scott Proctor walks in the game-winner!!!!- Braves take 4-3 lead in the 7th ... but the Dojers have 3 in in the 9th and are still batting w/ none out.Florida has lost to Sandy EggoAstros down 4-1 now heading for the 10th

Well, let's not go overboard here and claim NEVER about guys in their 2nd year. You certainly don't know what the future brings and what's going to be going on when these guys reach FA-gency and - gun to my head - I'd deal Reyes before I'd deal Wright. It's just that I think fans - and maybe Met fans in particular - often show a lot less patience than the teams they complain don't show enough patience, and are FAR too quick to fall in love with the thought of "prospects" they've barely (or never) seen - some of which will be nothing more than suspects. But, having said all that, it's way too soon to be forcing make-or-break decisions on Reyes. He's still close to be the youngest player in MLB in what is essentially his first full season.

]The next six weeks are crucial for Reyes. No they're not. He's 22 years old and I don't think there's any chance that the team decides whether or not to cut bait on him based on what happens over the next month and change.Hernandez is having a nice season in the minors but was considered swappable for a career backup catcher just a few months ago and I recently read that Met mgmt isn't sold on him as a ML regular yet. So let's hold off before we pronounce him a capable replacement for someone who was - and still is to some extent - one of the more exciting and talented young players around.
  18. No surgery for Carlos, could play as early as Wednesday.
  19. Robb Nen -- a guy who apparently didn't want to get nicknamed 'double palidrone' by going by BobThe double/double vowel club is much more exclusive, with pitcher Kirk Saarloos being it's only member.
  20. Trax to make one more rehab start on Thursday, thus delaying any decisions on this topic for at least another week.
  21. He can't even play left
  22. Defensively, Castillo/Wilson is one of the best MI duos anywhere; and I'm not sure how consistant this Duffy guy is in CF but he's made a number of hi-light reel plays out there in a short period of time.Brad Eldred has big time power.Zach Duke looks real good.
  23. The real "ethics" question here isn't for fans but rather for Willie and the front office. In cases such as this, managers are expected to play a competitive lineup and not "mail it in" with a roster full of rookies and nobodies. Now I don't know that there's anything that anyone can do to them if they didn't employ something at least resembling a regular lineup: not speak to them at winter meetings?; not let the Mets join in future reindeer games?; but it would definitely be consider a low-down move.
  24. It's apparently a small "shift" in a bone between the ear & eye area (on the order of "a few millimeters"). If things slide back into place on their own then no surgery is needed. If they don't he'll probably undergo the procedure which is going to be somewhat along the lines of an arthroscopic operation rather than the more invasive deal that Cameron needed. If he has the surgery he'll go on the DL obviously. Backdating it to last Friday he'll be available again as soon as a week from Saturday.
