  1. The Cards are yours.Hey Edgy, since you didn't do the Dodgers this weekend ya wanna tell us all about the Pirates by tomorrow?
  2. Nobody's dealing Beltran for Ramirez.
  3. COOBY1986- our favorite year. But basically, the music was not wonderful. In 1986, I worked at a record store. That didn't help me much; I still had to go to Columbia House and CDNow to hear snippets of 50 or so songs on the lists I found. I still couldn't remember some of them.My list extends to 27 for one simple reason: I just couldn't leave Huey off, but that song just doesn't fit in any higher up on my 'chart'. Quite honestly, there are probably only about ten songs on here that I would make an effort to ever hear again.1986 was proclaimed as "Whitney Houston's Breakout Year". Too bad, Screech, you didn't make my list. And you never will.1. Mad About You - Belinda Carlisle2. The Words Get in the Way - Miami Sound Machine(I still play this song a lot)3. We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off - Jermaine Stewart(I told you I liked it!)4. Holding Back the Years - Simply Red(I completely forgot about this song. But it was a pleasure to hear it again)5. Throwing It All Away - Genesis6. Silent Runnings - Mike and the Mechanics7. These Dreams - Heart(Just plain pretty)8. All I Need Is a Miracle - Mike and the Mechanics9. The Way It Is - Bruce Hornsby and the Range(Depressing but thought provoking. As it should be)10. Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone - Glass Tiger11. True Blue - Madonna12. Walk Like An Egyptian - Bangles(Admit it, you liked it too)13. Take My Breath Away - Berlin(The movie sucked, though)14. Something About You - Level 42(Unfortunately, when I see this title I think of INXS by mistake. But this song definitely has its own merits)15. Back In the High Life - Steve Winwood(Fit in nicely with the Mets championship, don't you think?)16. Human - Human League17. Venus - Bananarama18. When I Think of You - Janet Jackson(Is this song really that old???)19. Take Me Home - Phil Collins20. Amanda - Boston21. Invisible Touch - Genesis22. Glory of Love (Karate Kid II) - Peter Cetera23. Everybody Have Fun Tonight - Wang Chung(Couldn't leave this off!)24. I Didn't Mean to Turn You On - Robert Palmer25. Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel(dumb song, cute video)26. Conga - Miami Sound Machine(This song meant NOTHING to me until they used it in the opening credits of Magnum PI)27. Stuck With You - Huey Lewis and the News JONATHAN ARCHERCoobs - good list for a sucky year.I would rank Hip to Be Square over Stuck With You, though. A bad day behind a Nikon beats a good day behind a desk gf212121Holy cow. That's a lot of bad stuff. 'Holding Back The Years' is probably my favorite out of the list. But, just glancing at the '86 Hot 100, I'd have to throw in 'Kiss' by Prince, and the Dream Academy's 'Life In A Northern Town.' THE BIG TRAINSongs I also have on my 1985 list:"Holding Back the Years" - Simply Red"Walk Like An Egyptian" - Bangles"Something About You" - Level 42Lay off. Well, I don't think any of them made my final 30, anyhow, but...A lot of stuff I was expecting to grab in 1985 was actually '86: Peter Gabriel's So, Love and Rockets' Express, and most of the songs that were subsequently included on the 1987 soundtrack to Some Kind of Wonderful.I do get Robert Palmer's Riptide, which I wasn't expecting. When was Conga used for Magnum? COOBY Quote:--------------------------------------------------------------------------------When was Conga used for Magnum?--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Don't know exactly when. I just remember it being in the opening credits, which gave it instant status with me! It might have even been the Sid Fernandez episode.1986 to me means Mets/Magnum/Fernandez.It's all a blur WIDE BEE GEESome say REM's Lifes Rich Pageant (1986) was their best record I don't but it leads of with two of their best songs: Begin the Begin and These Days. I'd take either of both on this list. ...and if we added "Don't Let's Start" from They Might Be Giants, we'd only be up to 30.Oooh. We forgot Graceland. THE BIG TRAINMemo to myselfDo the dumb things I gotta doTouch the puppet head WIDE BEE GEEDear God: We forgot Dear God. COOBY DO NOT TOUCH MY LIST WITH THAT SONG. You may bend it, shape it, anything you want it, BUT DO NOT TOUCH MY LIST WITH THAT SONGI didn't forget Graceland; it was an event in itself, but I didn't like anything on it. THE BIG TRAINIf not "Dear God," then "Earn Enough for Us." What a great XTC album.Widey is reading kinda drunk. WIDE BEE GEEI ain't drunk, just stressed out. I'm channeling Memories of 86.I know tonight, she comes.EDIT: I see my REM message is badly punctuated. THE BIG TRAIN Yup(c). ___________________________________ THE BIG TRAIN Most of these songs, Echo's a notable exception, were released in 1986. ___________________________________ WIDE BEE GEENot the title track neither. THE BIG TRAIN The title track was from '81, and inspired the script, but The Year of the Mets gets "Shellshock," "Left of Center," and "Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want." WIDE BEE GEE The World Series and the BoDeans' LOVE & HOPE & SEX & DREAMS were big hits at the same time in Wide's crappy, smelly campus slum."Still the Night" or "Angels" could easily crack this list.
  4. KTE is "Know Thy Enemy"; it's our version of a series preview for the upcoming Mets' opponent.A recent one for a series against the SD Pads touched upon the whole number retirement issue http://cybermessageboard.ehost.com/getalife/viewtopic.php?t=611The delay for Reggie in Oakland had to do with some kind of long-simmering Jackson vs A's ownership dispute that apparently got smoothed over fairly recently.
  5. For the second time today Yancy says exactly what I would have had I posted quicker. I don't see this as even a slightly tough choice.
  6. What Yancy said.
  7. DL still possible for Beltran:He'll rejoin the team today in LA (but won't play) and then get another checkup in NYC on Monday. Apparently a surgical procedure - obviously less serious than the one on Cameron - is a possibility and would need to be done soon rather than after the season.Cameron will remain hospitalized in LA, maybe for the balance of the week.
  8. Seo - 5Williams - 1.8Castro - 1.4Wright - 0.7Cairo - 0.4Reyes - 0.4Floyd - 0.3
  9. That Met mgmt was run by a bunch of older conservative looking men is, I think, part of what gives legs to the story. That they would make a decision based on Jackson's persona rather than his talent "fits the profile" so it's easy for many to assume it to be fact (which ironically makes some of those claiming prejudice guilty of stereotyping themselves).I even had an exchange w/a guy on a board one time who not only claimed it was true but that that MD Grant "in his own words" had admitted it. Not surprisingly, he was unable to locate "his source", although I believe he was thinking of Jackson's book and managed to simply transfer the ASU coach's words into MD Grant's mouth. And again, not that any of this means it isn't true, just that it's hardly the settled matter that many seem to believe.
  10. Castro's feeling frisky today because he knows he can out-run the opposing catcher, something he can only claim while playing in the LA area - and even then it depends on which catcher they're using: Phillips, plus Bengie (but not Jose) Molina.
  11. Seo's doing some tap-dancing in the minefield but is getting away with it so far.2-0 end of 3
  12. Willie talked before the game about how he'd join the team on Saturday, but almost certainly not play then and quite likely not on Sunday either. They're off on Monday which points to a Tuesday return if all goes well. What's good is that nobody's mentioning anything about the shoulder.I suppose it's mainly a question now about how his head responds to work outs.
  13. In the meantime, Zambrano Ks the side in the 6th which makes it 5 consecutive scoreless following his troubled 1st inning.
  14. But at least no one got hurt. And a 5-4-3 got em out of the inning.

Yeah, like we've never discussed 'Pop Musik' around here before.http://cybermessageboard.ehost.com/getalife/viewtopic.php?t=533
  16. The story that Reggie told in his "auto"biography (written by Mike Lupica) is that his college coach told him that the Mets didn't want him for the girlfriend and (in the parlance of the times) "uppity nigger" reasons. Not sure if the coach ever commented on this publicly or not and Reggie's been known to have a vivid sense of self-importance.There was a story in Baseball America about 2 years back about HS-drafted catchers (around the time Joe Mauer was up and coming) which touched on Chilcott. Whitey Herzog was the Met player personnel director (or whatever his title was) at the time and was in charge of that 2nd ever draft. His story is that the Mets were truly divided on the Chilcott/Jackson issue before settling on the young catcher. Whitey claims he then went to his (then) 19 other counterparts after the fact to ask them who they would have drafted. The answer - by folks who had little reasons to mislead at this point - was Jackson 10 - Chilcott 9.Chilcott was injured in the minors and failed to make the majors (one of only 2 #1 overall picks to never play MLB) due to that, not due to lack of talent or "incorrect" drafting as some revisionist historians contend.

  23. "Contrary to what I've seen George Theodore collided with Dave Schenck...not Don hahn. The batter was Ralph Garr."You're right about the batter, but it was Hahn, not Schneck."We will hear at some point that Cameron is not a "natural" right fielder and cammy may say CF or nothing.."I doubt it. Collisions happen, and this one wasn't caused by anyone being out of position."Anyone think Beltran has the look of a man who is not real pleased or comfortable as a Met?"No
  24. Well fortunately we've got Moises Alou to fill in for Cammy since this same site "broke" the news of the 2-year Met contract he signed this past Spring.
  25. - We're some 4 games worse than our Pyth Proj would indicate ... something that's either managerial related or due to luck of the draw depending on which school of thought you subscribe to.- The 3 teams w/worse RS/RA ratios yet better records than us are: Florida (1.0 game ahead), Philly (1.5 GA) & Washington (who had a freakish Pyth-defying 1st half - 1.0 GA). I tend to think those rather small differences are largely just random chance than caused by some specific flaw. The three teams with better RS/RA are the ones seriously above us in standings: StL, Hou, Atl
