  1. "So I guess the implication is that you only have to clear waivers once to be traded after the deadline."Once within each 'waiver period' yes.If your guy is claimed and then you pull him back and try to get him through a second time in the same period then any claim becomes irrevocable. The Mets put Trax on waivers in advance for the same reason most of the league is put on waivers quickly after the period starts, so that if a trade offer does come up you don't have to wait 72 hours and hold your breath to see if you can make the deal you just agreed to. "Pre-cleared" players get rid of that annoying hang-up.
  2. AL: Oakland wins (Balt)Cleveland winning - 10-8 in the 8th (Det)Boston winning (and raining) - 3-0 in the 5th (TB)Minnesota tied - 1-1 8th (KC)David Wells loses his appeal of a 6-game suspensionYanx pick up the recently released Mark BellhornNL:Florida loses to StLCubbies losing to LA - and Kerry Woods' season is over; shoulder surgeryAtl/Wash were Katrina'd out
  3. ]I highly doubt they trade him for Olerud.I don't think so either but they're certainly not getting 2 higher-level prospects a la Stoppach and (especially) Hanley Ramirez for 5 weeks of Steve Trachsel.Trax is in a bit of a weird situation as far as a trade goes. The Mets hold an '06 option which isn't for very much money - something like $2.5mil - making it worthwhile to keep him and maybe deal him over the winter. But it's also got a bunch of complicated incentives which could push it higher AND ... he becomes a 10/5 guy this winter which would restrict the kind of deals you could make.
  4. or 6) that they're "choosing" pitchers based on past performance vs particular opponents.I don't necc agree with that since it's all based on small sample sizes but it's something and it's apparantly part of their thinking. And can we please have a discussion involving Zambrano without re-arguing the Kaz/Zam trade as if there are people here who supported it at the time and still are carrying a torch for it's merit.Argue that he should be dumped tomorrow, argue that he should be shot at dawn, argue that he should be sent to Brooklyn without his dinner, but at least choose a subject to argue where someone is disagreeing with you.
  5. ]I think the way these work is that different leagues in each state form all-star teams and battle with other in-state teams to see which one makes the national tourney. Those aren't state-wide teams, the restrictions are more local than that. The idea is that these teams are supposed to be representing an official LL area so that this does NOT become a cut-throat contest between elite picks from perhaps wildly unequal populations (that's what got the Phillipines team in trouble a bunch of years back). So this white-only team from Louisiana may just have been from a mostly white Looziana community even though the state has a sizable black population. The fact that baseball isn't nearly as popular among American blacks as it was in years gone by makes it increasingly likely that these state-side squads are going to be filled with suburban white kids.
  6. I don't know anything about who runs this site - http://flushinghardball.com/viewArticle.php?id=81 - but the guy being interviewed, Kevin Goldstein, is one of the prospect gurus at 'Baseball America'.Good questions and (to my ear anyway) some realistic expectations for some of the Met top minor league hopefuls. A sober voice in the midst of a lot of uninformed chatter which often tends towards both overly optimistic and pessimistic extremes.
  7. Dodgers/Astros still 0-0 in bottom 7.Clemens PH'd for after more 6 scoreless. ERA was ~ 1.50 coming in.Weaver still hurling for LA
  8. "against milwaukee in may is ok"No it wasn't (not according to fans at the time) but that's a whole seperate can o' worms for another day.Not that he was going to catch it anyway - but Woodward def lost that ball, probably in the sun.
  9. "Let them rest on the cross country plane ride if they need rest. "And we all know how relaxing cross-country travel can be!Point is, that unless and until this whole thing all falls apart on us, we could look at any game from here on out and say that it's not the time to rest a regular. It's our main lefty bat sitting against a tough lefty and takes advantage of the off-day to get the double day-off (ye olde Bobby V. strategy) and gear up for the stretch run.It all reminds me about the complaints at Benitez picking the wrong day to blow saves. In all that time I never heard what the criteria were for a good time to blow one.
  10. Alou hasn't been a good fielder since the first time we had a George Bush as President.
  11. Heads-up play by Benson ... gets followed by a dumb (heads-down?) play by Matsui ... gets bailed out by a nice play by Beltran.
  12. "today's lineup is bullshit, bad job willie"Jeez, is Willie allowed to rest any regulars? He's sitting one reg - or two if we've decided that a 5-day callup is now cast in stone, both of which are LHBs against a LHP. Other than that it's your standard cast of characters.
  13. Danny Graves, btw, cleared waivers and has reported to Norfolk. He made an appearance yesterday ... and promptly got hammered. They've got an option on him for next year (essentially that was the price of picking him up) but I can't imagine that they'll pick it up. At best they'll invoke the buyout and maybe invite him back in the spring to sing for his supper.
  14. AL:Yanx winBoston about to win (11-3 in 9th - even they couldn't blow that lead)Cleveland winsOakland winsAngels lose - got swept by Tampa in fact - so A's take over 1st in ALWestMinnesota loses
  15. Looks like all the leftys are getting the day off vs Lowry ... so much for Cliffy's vow to play all the remaining games in the season (well, I guess he didn't claim that he'd start all of them).
  16. The 'IFSPA' is Dickshot's name for fans with internet columns playing journalist. They often try to draw attention to themselves either by "scooping" the mainstream media by being the first to "report" breaking news, or by trumpeting various rumors into seeming like more than they really are.
  17. The announced rotation for the Philly series is: Seo -- Pedro -- GlavineThose first two are 'on turn' but Zambrano gets pushed back for a still to be determined amount of time, plus Trax gets at least one extra day of rest following his first official start of the year.
  18. Jeez, after I saw the hi(low)-lights of Saturday's Yanqui game it was even worse than I imagined. Not only was that error on a sure game-ending play (Posada & Giambi running) but then almost every hit that followed was a dinky grounder that justbarely found a hole through the IF. Any one of them could have ended the game ... but Noooooo! Not that I'm bitter or anything.
  19. The 'Trax is a slow worker' stories have long been overblown IMO.Yeah he's hardly the quickest guy out there - particularly w/runners on - but it seems he's been tabbed as the poster boy for this problem as if in a seperate category from anyone pitching today. He ain't that bad.Friday's game: 2:29
  20. BoSox blow an early 6-run lead and lose to Detroit.Braves win5 runs in the 1st for the Dodgers against Houston - that's several bad starts for Oswalt lately
  21. SHITFUCK!!!!
  22. Woodward to hit rather than Castro?Ramon has to come in anyway.
  23. Alou's still a great hitter but fortunately for us he can't do much of anything else. He got a terrible jump there.
  24. ABSOLUT CINTRON!Alex Cintron's 2R HR gives the Snakes a 2-0 lead over the Sillies after 7.
  25. I wanted to leave Glavine in for the bottom 7th but ya gotta PH here.Yo Steve Lyons ... STFU about Glavine and the contract deal. It wasn't funny the first time and it doesn't get better when you repeat it 8 more!!
