  1. Not brought up in all of this discussion (unless I missed it) is that there are LOTS of bad seats at Shea; between the orignial multi-purpose design of it pushing all but the field level way back from the field, to a good chunk of the upper-deck seats which are halfway to Brooklyn, to the back sections of both of the middle decks and their letter-box views, to the fact that many of the seats are oddly aligned towards the outfield. There is much room for improvement and I for one will not be upset to see the old building replaced.
  2. Always rooting for Brazelbon to thrive (cept against the Mets of course) because of the fact that he was acquired in exchange for (heh, heh, heh) Kevin Brown.
  3. Meanwhile, SNY has struck agreements with DISH, Blue Ridge Cable in PA, plus some small system in Jersey which I forget already (RNC?) On edit: It's Patriot Cable that's newly signed in New Jersey
  4. I think someone should march out to that whistling theme from 'The Bridge on the River Kwai'
  5. I agree that the biggest problem with these things isn't the design (air-vents, 2-tone, etc) it's that the colors are too metallic/shiny. If there is an all-blue version we probably won't see them for a while ... like the hats. They clash with the black jackets don't you know.
  6. Fans are def the ones being idiots here. Booing by the 3rd AB of the season because he didn't have 2 HRs already is chosen behavior. It's not like Beltran (or anyone for that matter) chooses to suck - especially briefly. One action is easy to change, the other isn't. That said, as much as I would have liked to see him NOT do the curtain call (and as much as I'd like the see the habit of automatic curtain-calls for every HR broken anyway - but that's a different story) it's not a fight that Beltran's going to win so, in that sense, Franco was right to talk him into his brief bow. Certainly can't blame Frank Robbie from being pissed but Guillen's a dolt. First he goes out there with the bat, and then starts the 'Lemme at 'em' charge precisiely at the moment that he's grabbed by two sets of hands and knows there's no way he'll ever reach his target.
  7. Martinez - 2.5 Beltran - 2 Delgado - 1.3 Reyes - 1.2 Wright - 1.3 Sanchez - 1 Bradford - 0.2 LoDuca - 0.5
  8. Speaking of which, Matsui is eligible to come of the DL in the next few days. Not sure if he will but what's the roster move when he does? Chavez isn't doing much - and I don't see much chance where he will Or it might be Diaz based on the theory that he needs ABs

They'd be about the same age although took different routes: Zimmerman to college, Wright right out of HS. I did know that Wright and the older of the Upton brothers (B.J. of TB) knew each other growing up and through youth baseball in the eastern Virginia area. Michael Cuddyer also although he's a few years older.

    ZERO!

Why didnt-cha? Trouble scaring up a Carter/Mondale picture?
  12. "Better than the barehander by Wright?" MUCH
  13. ]I can look at the 2005 WARP3 scores, and verify that, in fact, Wright was our most valuable hitter well, by one method of measurement is does. But let's not go mistaking whatever metric you want to use for the scientifically-stamped final word.
  14. Willets Point wrote: Is there an echo in here? Is there an echo in here? Mmmm, I guess there is. ]MLB rules state that any new ballpark must ahve fould line distances of st least 330 feet. Yeah, and virtually every single stadium built since they've put in that rule has ignored and/or gotten a waiver to bypass minimum. Whether it's a typo (I hope) or not, it's a silly rule if they're not going to enforce it. It's like having a law saying you can't do something ... unless you ask nicely.
  15. "I'm amazed that people are so willing to dump Hernandez so quickly," As opposed to Julio? He's at least had some ML success in his career. Andy-Handy has barely had any in the minors. "Rick Down will earn your money with this kid, he looks an awful lot like Reyes at the plate when he first came up," Obviously they're both quick, skinny-ish Latins w/good hands, but I don't see any similarities at the plate. Certainly their track records leading up to this point aren't even close. "anyway one of Willies strengths as a manager is that he sticks with his guys." That's either good or bad depending on your opinion of who he's sticking with.
  16. Pitcher Friendly: Pitcher Friendly: Distinctive asymmetrical outfield walls, along with generous dimensions (LF - 335'; LC - 379'; CF - 408'; RC - 391'; RF - 300') make for a traditional pitcher's park. RF = 300' ?!?!?!?!
  17. Except that, unlike the plus/minus ratings in hockey which is derived from in-game stats, attempting to judge a player's worth on a team's won/loss over the course of the year involves so many other factors that I don't think it'll tell you a whole lot. Hot & cold streaks involving other players, key injuries, mid-season trades, etc. have to be factored in or you're not measuring what you're setting out to do.
  18. Several more cases of shaky defense. * The Jeter/Cano non-DP was mentioned: Jeter bobbled a sure DP ball, then picked it up in time to still get the force but Cano dropped the flip (I think only Jeter got an error). * Bradley's triple to lead off the 8th would have been a great play if Damon came up with it but he didn't look real smooth chasing it (kinda like Matsui chasing Scutaro's the night before). Since the middle of last year Johnny Angel hasn't looked like the great ball hawk from previous seasons. * So then the infield's in and Payton hits a chopper to Cano, Bradley holds ... until Cano mis-plays it and MB trots home. Then the roof fell in on Wright & Farnsworth; kinda like Julio.
  19. I don't have any specific memories of him being a disaster in CF although there were several anecdotes in that 'Tales from the Mets Dugout' book which said he was. One mentioned that a few front-office types were touting that he be moved there for the post-Agee era but manager Yogi knew better from remembering earlier stints and never took the suggestion seriously.
  20. Bannister - 3 Nady - 1.2 Delgado - 1.8 Wright - 0.8 Heilman - 0.75 Sanchez - 1
  21. What's he now, about 1 for 26 in the majors? And I'm not sure if he's gotten the ball out of the infield in more than 2 or 3 of those 26 ABs. Hell, his hit barely made it out. Not suggesting that his trial is up already ... just that Met fans shouldn't root too hard for Matsui's knee problem to develop massive complications.
  22. Willets Point wrote: Some of those words: "Are those six Orioles fans out there? They don't look too excited." I doubt it. Remember those were temporary seats at that time (the current picnic area/stands had not yet been erected) and, IIRC, those temp seats were reserved for returning and disabled vets. A closer look shows some of those front-row types aren't sitting in indifference but rather are in wheelchairs.
  23. Elster88 wrote: ="Frayed Knot"]Can we all agree that Piazza was "Death on Pop-ups"? What does that mean? It's a joke (far too inside really) referring to a certain long-ago poster who would defend Mikey at all costs. S/He decided he was unusually good at tracking pop-ups and so used that particular phrase almost as if a nickname.
  24. ]But that's exactly the situation where statheads say you SHOULD bunt. Sacrificing increases the likelihood of scoring ONE run in the ining Actually it doesn't even do that; at best it's pretty much a wash. Yeah the runner's closer to home and you erase the logical GiDP, but now you've only got 2 shots at getting him in rather than 3. The results from '99 - '02 show that starting from: Runner on 1st/no outs = scoreless 56.3% of the time Runner on 2nd/1 out = scoreless 59.4% of the time You do increase the 'one-and-only-one' run odds (17.6% jumps to 23.0%) but that increase is at the expense of the '2-or-more' run outcomes (26.1% vs 17.5%) not from the scoreless innings. So it's still best to pick and choose who you're sacrificing with rather than just do it knee-jerk like even when it's a winning run situation (I forget now who was up for Oakland). I was just commenting on the sac because the A's so rarely do it - less than 20 all year last year I think I heard - even though it's certainly justifiable in that case.
  25. Can we all agree that Piazza was "Death on Pop-ups"?
