  1. So was his description of Met fans wanting to release half the team and send the other half to Cooperstown.
  2. ]I'll bet Harry never tripped going up or down stairs in those glasses. Oh I think Harry tripped A LOT walking up stairs, down stairs, and on flat ground. He was known to drink his dinner more than occasionally. ]Braves beat Cubs in the 9th on a throwing error. Carlos Zambrano took a no-hitter into the 7th. And speaking of Harry's old team ... man they suck! Not only did they lose after taking a no-no into the 7th, but they let 2 runs in on bases-loaded walks, and then 2 more (the winning runs in fact) on a single Sac Fly!! Meanwhile ... we suck too - that was Fugly!!!!
  3. I can't believe the rain they were playing through in the top of the 9th. Not only drenching rain coming down but also standing water all over the field. Royals didn't score in the top of the inning so the score's the same whether they resume the game or not.
  4. We like to think of ourselves as the anti-Met fan site Met fan's site.
  5. Valentin's versatility continues to come in handy. Which is not to say that he would have deserved to keep a spot on the roster had his hitting not turned around, but having a guy who can play several OF & IF positions while switch-hitting w/enough power potential to at least put a scare into the opposing manager is rarer than some fans apparently think judging by their almost immediate calls for his release by early April.
  6. Nothing worse than a 21 y/o Yanqui fan bragging about "their" 26 championships.
  7. "That's still a heckuva lot better than Michael Kay's call of a home run by "The Giambino" every time Jason Giambi hits one." John Sterling actually. He needed something to replace; 'The BAM-Tino' once the Yanx changed 1st basemen
  8. Throwing big bucks at very young but high-ceiling, 'toolsy' Latin teenagers is going to become a hallmark of the Minaya administration I suspect. The Yanx used this strategy for a spell in the mid/late '90s but have scaled back a bit after finding it a very expensive way of mining for talent.
  9. Suspension time: - Cubbie catcher Bennett 10 games - ChiSox OFer Brian Anderson - who seemed to be the main combatant in the aftermath - 5 games Piersynzski gets nothing for hitting Bennett's fist with his jaw.
  10. Bannister's also got to be a month or so away at this point. Rest was the prescription for his latest hammy setback so he's still got to go through the rest - rehab - minor league starts cycle again before they can even think of re-installing him. Lots of stuff can happen between now and then. I doubt there's any kind of even semi-solid concrete plans for him.
  11. Following up on Beato (there's a joke in there somewhere but I can't find it): From BA: I talked to someone with another team today who said he had heard that the Mets and Beato were getting closer to a deal. The expectation from other teams is that New York will sign him, especially considering that he's a first-round talent in a year in which it doesn't have a first-round pick. It's not like money is much of an object to the Mets, anyway. We ranked Beato as the No. 13 prospect on our Top 200 and he'd likely go in the second half of the first round if he re-entered the draft. He had Tommy John surgery during his junior season at Brooklyn's Xavieran High, and the Mets took him in the 17th round last year as a draft-and-follow. That proved to be an astute decision, as he has shown three plus pitches at times this spring. Beato has a hard sinker that sits around 90 mph and touches 96. He also has a sharp 84-85 mph slider and a promising changeup. He has a strong build at 6-foot-5 and 210 pounds, and his biggest need is to improve his mechanics and, by extension, his command. At age 19, he has plenty of time to figure that out.
  12. I hope your (Yancy's) program has the ability to distinguish future votes for O. Hernandez without adding them to past (and possibly future as well) votes for A. Hernandez.

  14. He pitched for the Cuban National team at one point which made him at least a potential "get" at the time of his signing. But Cuban pitchers have been a mystery since they've been arriving; some good, some bad, and some ugly. We just traded for the one who's been the most successful to date - even though that date may have expired by this point.
  15. I think it was in the game in the Bos/NYY '04 playoffs where Wakefield was pressed into a Madson-like lengthy relief job because one of the starters blew up early - ergo Mirabelli wasn't the starter that day and, behind by some runs early, they didn't want to pull Varitek's bat. The combo of him & 'Tek was pretty ugly but Wakefield's stint (along with a million other things) saved the series for them.
  16. Dave "Tiger" Williams was the most penalized player in the history of the NHL
  17. Reyes - 3.0 Gonzalez - 1.8 Bell - 0.7 Floyd - 1.0 Feliciano - 0.5 Nady - 1.0
  18. So - following that scintillating performance - Gonzalez has been DFA'd, presumably to make room for O. Hernandez. I guess Bell gets to stay a while to play the role of Jorge Julio.
  19. I think it's about time we remind Gordon that he's old and not very good - 4 pitch walk to Endy
  20. He is the last resort as far as I'm concerned but he was also the last resort coming into the season but that's what 3 simultaneous injuries plus a drug suspension will do to a rotation. Also, Maine and especially Bannister are NOT ready yet so he's not quit as far down the pecking order as you'd like.
  21. holychicken wrote: He is going to win 20 games this year. You heard it here first. And last. The encouraging thing about last night is that while Soler's main problem was the 1st inning walks (duh!) his overall control in his brief minor legue stint was excellent - leading you to believe that it was mostly a case of settling in rather than an ongoing concern. And while I'm still not wild about the El Ducky trade (I always hated that nickname too, but, like ARod, his actual name takes too long to type) we have - or will soon have - the pick of Ducky, Soler, Maine, Bannister & Gonzalez to cover those 4th & 5th slots in the rotation which certainly sounds better than how things were a week ago.
  22. Ya gotta remember that articles like these are basically to clue in the rest of the country to stuff that us locals and everyday nerds have already heard 20 times.
  23. Daly (deciding to take a piss into his empty 'Big Gulp' cup in lieu of stopping the van he & Reilly were riding in): 'Now you're gonna see why they call me Long John'
  24. Maine had been one of Baltimore's better prospects. If you're of the opinion that we should be trading higher-priced/prolly already maxed-out mediocrities for someone else's younger cheapies w/upside then Maine is precisely that type. Ditto Nady
  25. Monkeywrench was very popular when he played in Minnesota. Of course he could still hit back then.
