  1. The only problem w/the Conti interview was that they insisted on keeping the camera frozen on Conti while I'm fretting about missing pitches. Yo dudes, show the action! We can still listen while we're doing so. Sometimes they just give these TV production crews too many toys to play with (much worse problem on network shows than local) and they feel they need to use them all.
  2. "That's the coolest site ever! If only we could invite the proprietor to join us here in the Pool..." Or maybe we could first disrupt his carefully concocted "Most Looked Up List" and then swipe a few images to use as icons. Much more fun than some stuffy, formal invitation IMO.
  3. "Green was safe on that play. Metsies got lucky." It was sort of a weird tag: wrist to ankle rather than glove to foot; which moved it from close to realfuckingclose - but the defense will get that call most of the time. "About Lastings' throw" It had a wee bit of an arc to it and looked probably too high to cut. But it was low enough to where it wasn't obviously un-cuttable so the batter/runner prolly wouldn't advance anyway. Very nice - though short of outstanding - throw. "Did you guys hear Keith talking about how fast the game was going? He was practically giddy." He hates it when these silly games interrupt cocktail hour.
  4. Kooz defintinely suffered from Seaver-shadow a couple of times. He lost the '68 ROY one year after Seaver won it. Now losing to Johnny Bench is no disgrace but I always wondered how many writers said; 'aw, we gave it to a Met pitcher last year' In '75, Randy Jones - who had 3 speeds: slow, slower, slowest - lost the CY to Seaver when some thought that the difference in their twos reps played a part. So then in '76, Jones gets out to a 16-1 (or something like that) start *by the All-Star Break* and is the talk of baseball as visions of a 30-game winner dance through folks' heads. He then had a very mediocre 2nd half as Koosman "caught up" and maybe surpassed him but the die was already cast and the vote wasn't particularly close. And again, it seemed a bit like; Jones loses out to Seaver so let's not out-Met him again this year
  5. "Reyes throwing behind the dancing runner was kewl also." Although real fukkin risky. The downside of missing that (and he almost did) is MUCH bigger than the upside of getting the easy out. "Was Valentin the first Met runner to reach third?" First runner for either team
  6. Yesterday I said that the Tigers didn't look too impressive. Well I've changed my mind ... they REALLY SUCK!!!! Somehow they had the best RS/RA coming in to this week - which is surprising considering how inept they look at the plate and how the next accurate throw I see them make will be the first.
  7. Martinez - 5.0 Valentin - 1.2 Chavez - 1.0 Milledge - 0.2 Reyes - 0.2 Sanchez - 1.6 Wagner - 0.8
  8. The April whipping boys come thru with the win!!!!
  9. I would have gone to Glavine to bunt. It's a better bunting situation than the one where he HAD Reyes sac-cing.
  10. If Beltran can't go Friday (diagnosed as bruise for now) they've almost certainly gotta use Chavez anyway so shirley it'll be him in CF leaving the kid in RF.
  11. Seeing as how those awards seem pre-determined you're probably right. Maddux would have to make about 18 errors between now and September not to win it.
  12. [cynic's view]Madden pissed off that Milledge makes it to the show quicker than Eric Duncan[/cynic's view]
  13. Keith Moreland is mentioned in Steve Goodman's 'A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request' - although the song isn't specifically about him.
  14. ]Can you trade a guy on the DL (Bannister just moved to the 60 day btw)? You can if you make him a Player-to-be-named-later ]And we want to add him to the Mets because...? Because he's old, slow and white.
  15. Lastings is all set in case he needs to weigh anchor someplace. Yes it looks stupid and yes, I think the team (if not the league) should ban/restrict such stuff.
  16. Well he was until all the black players on the team beat him up for keeping the black man down by stealing their #44. Or something like that ... I may have a few facts wrong.
  17. The Tigers then seemed to enter a contest in which some sort of prize were being awarded to the team who can screw up the most plays in one inning ... and so one botched grounder, one botched fly, one botched DP, several PBs & WPs, plus a few walks later and the Yanx win it 11-6. Small sample obviously, but I've been quite underwhelmed by this best-record-in-baseball Detroit team. Tons of Ks w/o the usual power that goes with it; spotty starting pitching (tons of walks); and the next clean infield DP they turn will be their first. I watched pieces of two games and have seen them screw up at least 3 or 4.
  18. The good news: The Tiggers have erased a 6-0 defecit (or maybe it was 5-0, then 6-1) and have tied the game heading for the 9th The Bad News: Twice they've loaded the bases w/0 outs and have scored a grand total of 1 run out of them innings. They should be kicking Yanqui butt at this point.
  19. Oliver - 2.5 Milledge - 0.8 Floyd - 1.0 Valentin - 1.2
  20. "MK points out that Milledge got his first Major League hit much quicker than Anderson Hernandez did." Not only that but I believe LM's one hit traveled further than AH's 6 or 7 ML hits did put together. Also: - Those first inning runs should be unearned and charged to the account of 2nd base ump Bruce Froemming - Eric Byrnes eats worms
  21. BA: Norfolk righthander Evan MacLane won his fourth game in five Triple-A starts on Monday, allowing just four hits and one run in seven innings. The southpaw got 11 groundouts in his victory, dropping his Triple-A ERA to 1.93 .
  22. Newsday's Neil Best pulls back the curtain on the behind the scenes "immortal" radio man
  23. Supposedly while they were checking him out after last night's HBP Nady fessed up to being bothered by some abdominal pain for a few days now. Maybe "emergency" is being used a bit too liberally in this case.
  24. Edgy DC wrote: Bat him second or sixth or seventh? I'm thinking they won't want to move Lo Duca while he's hitting well, and they'd like to debut him in a low-pressure kid-glovesy manner, but second has his name all over it. I'd be shocked if they put him anywhere but Nady's regular spot - or maybe even a slot lower. And it's not that I look at this whole deal as a good thing, but it is good that Lastings can come up at a time where he's: a) not expected to be any kind of "savior" or sole focus of attention can easily be sent back if/when he struggles as soon as Nady is ready to go And if he's not struggling ... well we'll deal with that when we come to it.
