  1. Drafted just 2 years ago and already 25 y/o? Sounds not only like the rare college senior draftee but an older-then-usual senior at that. Guys like that have a smaller margin for error than younger draftees and sometimes really have to soar in order to make an impression - and it sounds like he is. Rubin seems to have the best handle on our minor legue system of all the beat guys.
  2. The best thing about this game (in addition to the monster comeback of course) is that it's delaying the telecast of their precious ESPYs. The over/under for in-game mentions that the ESPY telecast (which is on tape btw) was airing after the game was 85. I bet the over and am looking to clean up big time. Charlton Heston doesn't own enough weapons to make me watch that show.
  3. He threw out the first pitch (about 40 ft worth) to Bench in today's game.
  4. ="TheOldMole"]Is Edgar Alfonso still working for the Mets? I believe so. Also the nephew (Edgar's son) is pitching in the minors somewhere. I have no problem with Fonz getting a minor league chance and all. I just wish he had shown some clue that he can still hit major league pitching over the last 5 years. Let's face it, as sad as it was to see him go, not signing him was a great move as things turned out. His '01 & '02 seasons were a shell of his '98-'00 self and since '03 he's been even worse.
  5. OK, people COULD blame him if they really want ... but it would be really stupid to do so.
  6. Ugly game - but also a weird one. I don't think I've ever seen a team bat around in consecctive innings while only hitting one, or maybe two, balls hard the entire time as the Cubbies did. Not that we deserved to win or anything but every grounder they hit found a hole, every bouncer went over an infielder, every tweener was justbeyond some fielder's reach, yyybbb. The Hank White (Henry Blanco) 2B was maybe the only hard hit ball and who knows what happens if Endy doesn't lose that leadoff fly in the sun. Can't blame him but that changed the entire game.
  7. Got a chance to watch part of the game on replay: - Woodward def got robbed. They've added an extra small fence behind the "basket-like" out-dropping that sits atop the real fence and the ball cleared the basket before bouncing off the second fence and coming back onto the field. I have no idea what the purpose of that second mini-fence is but they say that's at elast the 3rd time the umps have screwed up a visiting team's HR call just this year. - Nady's slide that broke up the DP leading to 2 runs was hard & aggressive and justabout legal, but the Cubs really don't have much of a beef. First of all the SS got rid of the ball before Nady ever touched him so it's his fault that he threw wide (and the 2nd baseman for a slow flip). Once Nady did hit him foot-to-foot several feet off the line he reached out for the base and would have had it with longer fingers. Technically could have been called I suppose but since it didn't really interfere with the throw and was within inches of being completely legit I'm not surprised they didn't.
  8. Well, we've got Glavine + Trax + Duque So, with Pedro out you go with Pelfrey AND Maine (maybe just one more time around the rotation anyway) When Pedro comes back you go with Pelfrey OR Maine. Or maybe they trade for someone later this month and Maine & Pelfrey finish out their season in the minors - but none of those scenarios involve the placing (or the need really) of Heilman back in the rotation. And - since we all seem to agree that he looks worse lately than he has in a long while - I'm not sure this should be the spot where we figure out ways to get him more innings. What we do with him beyond this year is a seperate argument for another time but I think he's in the pen for the duration of this year anyway.
  9. Trachsel - 3.0 Valentin - 1.7 Floyd - 1.3 Woodward - 1.0 Wright - 0.7 Nady - 0.2 LoDuca - 0.8 Sanchez - 0.4 Hailman - 0.5 Wagner - 0.4
  10. Not all that baffling. The thing about 'Lima: Phase 2' is that it was pretty much certain that it was only a one-shot deal as the only reason he was out there was because Pedro's injury (added onto Bannister's and Zambrano's) came up at the same time as the pre-AS DH. Remember that he wasn't called instead of Maine & Pelfrey but rather in addition to them; IOW, he was the backup's backup's backup. Once we hit the 4-days-off/3-games-in-9-days stretch neither Heilman or Lima were going to start again no matter how they threw and they didn't want to yank Heilman out of the pen only to toss him back there again. Now it doesn't seem like they want to give Heilman a start anyway - partly because they like their pen and partly, I suspect, because they think he'll be less effective there - but I don't think their reasons for starting Lima for that one game were all that complicated.
  11. Marrero PH-ing for Trax drives Woodie in w/a Sac Fly. Trax continues to confound Met fans - whenever they're ready to write him off and ship him out he becomes like good and stuff - almost as if he does it on purpose (I like to think he does)
  12. Well, whichever paper suggested Prior starting this weekend is wrong as they've just DL'd him. So I guess what remains to be seen is whether Zambrano takes the reins.
  13. cleonjones11 wrote: THE POLYNESIAN PANTLOAD Y'know if Ponson were actually Polynesian (instead of being from about as far away from Polynesia as one can get) this had the chance to be somewhat humorous. But alas!
  14. Yanx don't need a CFer. They need a corner guy with some pop and Byrd doesn't fit that at all. Byrd could make someone a decent bench player but I'm not sure he's looking at much beyond that at this point. Was a fairly highly touted prospect a coupla years back.
  15. The Cubs starters for this weekend vary widely depending on which source you look at. Both Newsday & the NYPost are leaving Zambrano off of their lists (maybe that elbow-v-bat thingie). One of them shows Prior pitching Sunday with Marshall moving up, while the other has neither Zambrano or Prior going and has some other rookie in addition to Maddux & Marshall.
  16. Friday's game is an ESPN broadcast too for those of you out-of-towners. So is Sunday night's at the odd hour of 6PM EDT - gotta finish in time for the ESPYs awards don't you know.
  17. Yeah, essentially there were three pieces of news coming out of Chicago where the Mets are today for a team workout: via Eddie Coleman on FAN 1) Pedro was felled by a stomach bug over the break and therefore did not throw as planned (or at least that's their story and they're sticking to it) ergo he's NOT sked to pitch Wednesday as per the original plan. Assuming this is a legit story, and not something concocted in order to cover up something concerning his hip/toe/shoulder, all this does is give him a longer break. 2) Reyes will NOT be in the lineup on Friday but should be sometime during the weekend. Still the pinkie finger bugging him and apparently he can swing righty better than lefty 3) Pelfrey will throw Tuesday, filling out the Trax, Glavine, Ducky rotation. So Wednesday (where Pedro was sked to start) can either be filled with Maine or w/Trax who will be on his reg rest by then thanks to Monday's off day. Speculation is that Maine can be used out of the pen this weekend or maybe take the start on Wednesday if not needed before then.
  18. Claimed off waivers according to WFAN The MFYs were in 5th starter hell after the collaspses of last year's heroes Aaron Small & Shawn Chacon so I guess he'll be slotted in right away. Ponson has been famously under-acheiving, overweight, over-imbimbing, and occasionally under arrest in the last few years, mostly in Baltimore. He had started off (relatively) well with the Cards this season but not so much lately it seems and was waived.
  19. Majewski is a pretty good reliever and the Reds pen needed help bad - but they must really like those young Washingtonians (who I know nothing about) or this trade seems really odd to me too. You would have though Kearns to be safe when they dealt Wily Mo Pena early in the season. But this all looks like the team in contention is trading for the future and verse-vica. Clayton's OK for instance but he's 64 years old. Sheeet, he was already a veteren when he became the first ever strikeout victim of teacher-turned-pitcher Jim Morris and that was about 8 years ago.
  20. ]He [Van Poppel] was a highly rated #1 overall pick, and reached the majors - again and again and again with different teams. Actually he wasn't the #1 overall although many expected him to be and 'Baseball America recently listed him as the best high school talent in the last 20 years!. But his expected asking price scared off many and he wound up lasting until Oakland with the 14th pick. The Braves - holding the #1 that year - "settled" for some guy named Chipper instead. From that original MFY list, Shea Morenz sounds like a guy who was drafted by the wrong NY team -- or maybe even the wrong sport since he's the grandson of NHL great Howie Morenz.
  21. Maine - 2.4 Bradford - 1.0 Sanchez - 0.5 Beltran - 0.5 Franco - 0.8 Floyd - 0.4 Woodward - 0.4
  22. I believe that is correct: #6 overall pick in 1992? Of their other "home-grown" players: - Posada & Pettitte were late round picks who made good. - And most of the others; Mariano, Bernie, Cano, Soriano, Wang, Cabrera, etc., were Int'l free agents
  23. Pelfrey - 1.9 Owens - 0.6 Chavez - 0.4 LoDuca - 1.0 Beltran - 1.4 Wright - 0.4 Floyd - 1.5 Valentin - 2.8
  24. Glavine - 2.0 Wright - 3.0 Nady - 1.5 Beltran - 1.2 Feliciano - 1.0 Wagner - 0.7 LoDuca - 0.6
  25. Nice form ... although her hitting could use some work.
