  1. Edgy DC wrote: Game of inches. We may have won by a dozen or so runs, but our two biggest pops would've been outs had the left- and rightfielders been a total of an inch taller. Or simply better OFers. Burrell's not as bad as he was when he first came up but still isn't good, and Jose Hernandez is a hastily converted infielder. The IW to Wright is certainly understandable. Yeah he's slumping but it's still him vs Jose Valentin and, as it was done to re-load the bases, it was a reasonable strategic move as well.
  2. "It's good to have butterflies, but you need them to fly in formation" -- Rick Peterson on Oliver Perez's early troubles in his first Met start
  3. Of course if you listen to some current Yanqui fans they'd just as soon have ARod off their team the second this season's is over if not before. He's something like 0 for his last 12 with 10 Ks. Griffey tied Reggie the other day - 1 more and he knocks ol' RJ out of the top 10 (tee-hee). Just in time for his 60th birthday.
  4. Beltran - 1.8 Delgado - 2.0 Green - 1.8 Chavez - 1.9 Reyes - 0.4 Perez - 0.4 Oliver - 0.4 Mota - 0.5 Feliciano - 0.4 Woodward - 0.4
  5. Those who benefitted from the New York Mets win would like to acknowledge the contributions of Phils manager Charlie Manual, for without his efforts in pulling starter Jon Leiber after just 86 pitches this victory may not of been possible.
  6. Steve Lyons doing color on FOX's Game of the Week (Yanx-Angels) after spotting Reggie Jackson in the stands: "There's a guy who hustled during every pitch of every game he ever played" That sound you just heard was Billy Martin rolling over in his grave.
  7. The Tiggers - losers of 3 of 10 and 12 of their last 17 - have their lead whittled down to 5 games ... but now it's over the Twins! The Twinkies beat the ChiSox for the 3rd time in the last week, passing them in the standings and taking over the WC lead for the first time this season.
  8. Willie was most likely making a bit of a funny by suggesting that it doesn't matter who the backup catcher will be. I suspect he was just using the occasion to stress that he'll be going with his main guy in October -- but, of course, if the plan is to never put your backup catcher into the game, having that guy be a classic 'catch-n-throw' catcher would be essentially worthless.
  9. Beltran - 2.4 LoDuca - 1.2 Bannister - 1.6 Wodward - 0.4 Heilman - 0.4 Feliciano - 0.6 Bradford - 0.4
  10. Wasn't it info on IMDB that "reported" that Piazza had a part as a high-school bully in some teen werewolf movie?
  11. btw, I miscalculated a bit when saying that Castro would be unavailable until around WS time. The 60-day DL dates back to when he was first put on the 15-Day (it doesn't start anew) meaning he'd be eligible by sometime in late Sept -- meaning we won't neccesarily need to go into the post-season with DiFelice or some other such non-hitting backup. Of course Willie was quoted as saying that it hardly matters since he's likely to go everyday with the main guy anyway during the playoffs. Still rather have Ramon off the bench to swing a bat in a pinch even if that's all he does.
  12. metirish wrote: I'm sick of seeing the Phillies....go Mets. That's one of the arguments against the creation of these "regionalized" divisions that someone's always suggesting. If the Mets were in a division with the Phils, Yanks, & BoSox (an example that's often proposed) then Philly & Boston would both come into town for about 38 games per year. Then you'd REALLY be sick of them
  13. Jeter Trachsel transcends numbers!
  14. Back to Shawn Green the ballplayer for a second; I've now read two different pieces over the last day or two (Hardball Times & Baseball Prospectus) that have referred to him as a defensive liability, even "albatross" in the words of BP. That's never been my impression but it's not liked I've watched him a whole lot lately. It's a situation that bears watching in any case. We should keep our eyes out for any clues of defense-related crimes being committed in Shea; Mr Green ... in RightField ... with the mitt
  15. Our 'Playoff Odds' - as reported by the folks at [u:0681152677]Baseball Prospectus[/u:0681152677] - sits at 99.99945% This is the deal where they figure not only a team's Win pct to this point but also their RS v RA, their upcoming schedule, and, of course, that of all their opponents. They then put all that into a simulator and "play" the remainder of the season [u:0681152677]1 Million times[/u:0681152677]. Of those "million seasons" we fail to make the playoffs in about 5 of them. We actually lose the division in almost 150 tries, but win the WC in 140-some of those.

  17. ]And I never knew it was literally the mound-I thought it was when the manager crossed the baseline to the field. That's the part that confused me. I always heard that a visit became a visit when the ump crossed the baseline. Seems to me that you'd then have to cross and re-cross THAT to make it constitue another trip -- but apparently the rule reads otherwise. Kudos to Bochy for knowing that (I bet Bobby V knows it too)
  18. DWilliams - 2.5 Delgado - 2.0 Reyes - 1.8 LoDuca - 1.3 Green - 0.3 Wright - 0.3 RHernandez - 1.4 Mota - 0.4
  19. ]It's my understanding Bruce Bochy was aware enough to point out Grady's goof (and know the rule!) Yup, it was Bochy who brought it to the umps' attention. All seemed a little odd to me, mainly because as Little was talking to the home plate ump, said ump was walking with him - almost escorting him even - back to the mound. Seemed like more of an odd technicality really rather than a rule break - but I guess rules is rules.
  20. * In Thurs afternoon's Tiggers-ChiSox game, Sean Casey lined a single into leftfield just off the top of the glove of a leaping Joe Crede at 3rd. But Casey apparently thought Creded snagged it and so didn't run immediately. By the time he realized the ball was in the outfield, the LFer was coming up gunning and nipped Casey at 1st by an eyelash. Mark that a 5-7-3 putout in your scorebook. * Wednesday night in SD, Dodger manager Grady Little comes out to the mound to talk to Brad Penny. Penny was pissed off (big surprise!) at the ump and was jawing at him as Little arrived. Grady reaches the mound but then comes off the keep the ump away from his pitcher. He then returns to the mound which the umpsrule as a 2nd trip because he had left the dirt area and then returned. Now THAT's one I had never heard of before. Both Little & Penny also wound up getting ejected for their troubles.
  21. Thought Davey-boy had one there ... settles for the sac fly. Marquis is gonna have to come in with one sooner or later. He's trying to live on the outside corner the whole night (esp w/the leftys, he wanted no part of Delgado). Someone's gonna smack him but good before this night is over.
  22. Williams has a nice swing but he bails out something awful.
  23. Green's stance is much more open than I remember it from earlier in his career. My first impression of him from back in his Toronto days was that his tall (though not AS tall), thin build and Blue Jay uni wearing #15 (I think) you could see the 5 on his back in his slightly closed stance - all of which made him look a lot like Olerud who had recently played there. And I thought, hey here's a guy who's going to be pretty good: he's a John Olerud ... but with speed!!
  24. ESPN2 is being blacked out on my system -- which I assume means that his game is being televised by them nationally for any of you out-of-towners who are normally shut out.
  25. Reyes's bloop is one that Edmonds sucks up easily. He'd spread some mustard on it doing so ... but he'd almost certainly get it.
