  1. I'm certainly now offended by anything said, just found it all to be pretty unimaginative. The whole 'Hey cool, an athletic Jew!!' thing is on the level of the stuff kids find funny when first discovering ethnic humor at about age 13 or so; and the, 'Take that Mel Gibson' line, while not bad, was kind of sitting there on a platter and then lost it's appeal after they beat it into the ground again and again.
  2. That was 9 hours worth of suck yesterday.
  3. ]One or two even know that ... that nails was an adjective -- it meant good in '86 Mets jargon -- before it became a proper-noun nickname. I always learned it this way too but probably because I learned it from reading Marty Noble; that Dykstra's nickname orignially grew out of his odd/creative vocabulary. He was forever using the word 'Nails' as an adjective: a clutch hit was 'Nails', a good pizza was 'Nails', a good-looking chick in the stands was described as 'Nails'. That the 'Nails' name also fit the more commonly assumed "tough as nails" source is probably the main reason it caught on with the general public, but Noble is the only one I read who sticks to his guns on this version of the source.
  4. Trachsel - 3.2 Chavez - 2.0 Wright - 1.9 Beltran - 1.2 Bradford - 0.6 Wagner - 0.6 Delgado - 0.25 Woodward - 0.25
  5. This is probably Kaat's last year in the booth (see Msuhnick's NYPost article Friday) which is too bad because he's my favorite guy on NYY telecasts. But he's now 68 and has been in baseball in one form or another; playing, coaching, announcing, since sometime in the mid/late '50s.
  6. Two hours into the 2nd Yanx-Sawx game and it's in the 4th inning, 7-5 Yanquis but the Boston boys are threatening. Both starters (Lester & Pontoon ... I mean Ponson) are gone. Now 7-6 as Papi gets one in on an FC And Torre's leaving the lefty Villone in to face Manny ... who promptly ties the game on the first pitch he sees. This one may go until they're ready to start tomorrow's tilt.
  7. Trachsel continues to confound those who are all set to write him off. Keep lowering that magic number boys.
  8. ScarletKnight41 wrote: It's good that Trax went deep tonight. We'll need all hands on deck tomorrow with the rookie starting. Dave Williams isn't exactly a rookie.
  9. Julio came up as a middle infielder Of course that was during the Civil War
  10. You can make trades up til the final day of the season (Bosox & Mike Stanton last year) but a player who's not on the roster by Aug 31 is not eligible for post-season play.
  11. Sox pen gives up 43 hits in a row (that may be a bit off) and it's now 8-3 heading for the bottom of the 7th and heading for a 4 hour game.
  12. Eric Hinske having a nice Bosox debut with his 3rd double of the game. Tying runs on, none out in the 6th.
  13. A Manny HR cuts the lead to 4-2 after 5
  14. Now 4-1 Johnson was chased after the Damon HR and several more singles. Some other re-tread is trying to get them out of the 5th still.
  15. What was it that gave it the R rating? Snake sex
  16. ]Post Killed General Mills takes over
  17. ]Post Killed Yeah, but Wiley Post was killed in a plane wreck with Will Rodgers in 1935. Thanks for the info but I think we already had this information.
  18. ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Preston Wilson signed with the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday, after being released by the Houston Astros earlier this week. Wilson batted .269 with nine home runs and 55 RBIs with the Astros, but disappointed them with a lack of power. The Cardinals hope to improve their lineup against left-handed pitching.
  19. I'd prefer Green to Preston but he also comes at a higher price, both for right now and the fact that he's signed for next year. A lot depends on how desperate the Snakes are to get rid of him
  20. Personally, I though the whole Leary & friend act was juvenile and not particularly funny.
  21. I think I heard something this morning about the Cardinals being his likely destination.
  22. From "Ask BA": Q: Now that righthander Kevin Mulvey is in the fold for the Mets, where do you think he ranks in their system and where do you see him eventually fitting into their plans? I didn’t hear much about him in the run up to the draft. A: New York's top pick in the June draft, Mulvey ranks in the Mets' second tier of prospects. He's behind outfielder Fernando Martinez and righthanders Mike Pelfrey and Philip Humber, and alongsinde players such as righty Deolis Guerra, lefty Jon Niese and outfielder Carlos Gomez. There was talk that he could go in the supplemental first round, but the Mets landed him in the middle of the second round and signed him for slot money, $585,000. He has three solid pitches, including a low-90s fastball, a curveball or a slider. Despite his good stuff, Mulvey didn't dominate mid-level competition at Villanova, so that's a red flag. But if he develops as hoped, he should be a nice mid-rotation starter for New York two or three years from now.
  23. ]Gotta be th feeling in Boston that the Sox had their chance to bury the MFYs in April, May and June and simply didn;t do it. Same as it ever was ... Same as it ever was ... Same as it ever was ...
  24. Ah yes, the always present fatalistic New Englander. Wish I felt better about the Sox chances myself - but their pitching is in a bigger mess than the Yanx'. I suspect we'll get a less-than desisive split of some sort, but the Sawx have put themselves into a spot where they can't afford to fall further behind. There'll be a 4-game series in da Bronx next month. And to add to the WC implications for whoever does lose this division, the ChiSox are playing the Twins for 3 games this weekend.
  25. Maine - 3.0 Delgado - 3.0 Beltran - 1.9 Bradford - 0.6 Feliciano - 0.3 Heilman - 0.4 Wagner - 0.4 Reyes - 0.4
