  1. I'd vote for Sierra Madre to start off also. Huston directs his father Walter in it. He also appears in it himself (uncredited) as the American in a white suit getting his shoes shined as Bogart is asking for a handout, just before the Mexican kid who sold Bogie a lottery ticket tells him that he's the winner. That kid gows up to be the wife-murdering Robert Blake.
  2. Any good OBPs that Keppinger put up were mostly due to a decent singles-oriented BA, he never really walked much. There was a segment of Met fans that went overboard on both him and Andy Hernandez over the winter - "Wow, we're just stacked at 2nd base!!!" - by allowing themselves to be fooled by the fact that last year both had good, though rather empty, BAs with few walks and little power.
  3. Actually, I think it was Posada who caught him straying too far off the base .... although where d'hell he was planning on going I have no idea. Posada, btw, is having a much improved year both offensively AND defensively this season (bucking those predictions for mid-30s catchers) but I'll repeat what I've said a number of times this year; that Yanqui opponents seem to be in a contest with each other to see how many outs they can make on the bases. It's not just the caught stealings - though there have been a number of those - but the stupid shit like DeJesus (a Rutgers man) getting picked off 3rd while trailing by 5 at the time and other inexplicable stuff that I see virtually every time I turn on a MFY game.
  4. As of Thrusday, Sept 7: TEAMRECORDPCTGBPADRES73 - 66.525---PHILS70 - 69.5043MARLINS70 - 69.5043GIANTS70 - 70.5003-1/2REDS69 - 71.4934-1/2ASTROS68 - 71.4895BRAVES66 - 73.4757D'BACKS65 - 74.4688 * San Diego, winners of 5 straight, are just one game behind the Shea-bound Dodgers for the NLWest lead, meaning that our opponents this weekend could soon be the leading contender to be our first-round playoff opponents. * Philly heads to Florida for 4 games starting tonight. Because those two start the day tied for 2nd in the NLEast, our 'Magic Number' can ony go down by a max of 1 today. Root for a split. * Milwaukee & Colorado both spent this week falling into the double digit deficit range and have therefore been eliminated from this here chart
  5. Perez - 4.7 Green - 2.0 Chavez - 1.1 Woodward - 1.1 Reyes - 1.1
  6. Sigh ... no no-hitter. And I was just starting to get all excited about it too.
  7. Sounds like he's got one of those 'don't step on the foul line' superstitions ... only with a bit of flair added
  8. Zvon wrote: That was the 119th time the Mets have scored in the 1st inning this season. Thats freakin impressive. I believe that's 119 total runs in 1st innings, not 1st inning runs in 119 games (there've only been 130-some games to date) Still impressive, just not quite the same as how you put it. on edit: oops, let's make it 120
  9. Williams - 3.1 Delgado - 2.6 Green - 2.1 Feliciano - 0.6 Mota - 0.6 Wagner - 0.6 LoDuca - 0.4
  10. USA beats Cuba to win the Olmplic qualifying tournament 3rd save in the tourney for Henry Owens
  11. Gwreck wrote: I could see him as a backup outfielder with Milledge, Beltran and Green as the starters next year. Don't think you'll get Cliff to agree to that though. Unless he comes out of the off-season half crippled, some team is going to not only offer him a starting job but probably at least a 2-year deal. He's not turning that down to be a part-timer just so he can train Milledge to tote his luggage around.
  12. <<<<---- Say Hey!!!!! The Rochester-Baltimore affiliation was, I believe, the longest running in MLB/MiLB (40+ years?) when it ended about 3 years ago. IIRC, the story at the time is that Rochester was fed up with Bal'mer (Angelos?) rather than the other way around.
  13. Except that it still comes down to the ability to strike a business agreement between the franchise and the individual local owners. I believe the NYM agreements with Norfolk & Binghamton both pre-date and post-date Cashen.
  14. Willie implied that Lastings is somewhat of "a longshot" to get a spot on the post-season roster (although he may have just been playing things a bit coy). But with Green already on the hook for next year, I suspect that he, Milledge & Beltran are the early favorites for next season's outfield.
  15. The Yanx' agreement w/Columbus is up also. They could be looking to move further east (esp since George no longer maintains a residence in Ohio) and might be a competitor for Scranton if that actually is a sought after destination. This game of affiliiate musical chairs is common each winter - but the Mets have stayed out of it for the most part by being very stable at the higher levels.
  16. I don't consider him to actually be a CY candidate, but the 'DeathWatch' was probably overdone: MONTHIPsSAVES/OPPsHitsERHRsBBsKsBAAAPRIL13.07 / 9812515.170MAY13.04 / 51171720.220JUNE10.24 / 5620511.176JULY12.17 / 7821111.178AUGUST12.110 / 111132218.234 Mainly, he's calmed down the wildness of the early season.
  17. Of course it's not as easy as simply deciding to "take" a particular affiliate from another team. Only those cities who also have expiring agreements are going to be available. NYM & Norfolk are currently one of the longest lasting ML/AAA affiliations around. Be a shame if it went away. Considering that the whole Norfolk/Chesapeke area is one of the largest metroplitan areas without a ML team, it's tough to think of a city that's closer or more attractive.
  18. "Wright demonstrated the competitive nature that has spurred him to an All-Star season on the diamond, beating out Glavine and Paul Lo Duca with a bubble that measured 14 inches. Not only did Wright top Smoltz, he bested the Rally Foundation's Major League record of 13.5 inches, set by Baltimore Orioles catcher Eli Whiteside earlier this year. " I suspect steroids
  19. On a semi-related note, we can all start worrying about our minor leaguers as well as the US has qualified for the (supposedly last of its kind) 2008 Olympic Baseball Tourney. The team - with Henry Owens among others - is currently 7-1 in the regional qualifier and plays against Cuba today for the championship -- although the top two teams automatically advance meaning that the U.S. & Cuba are in no matter what happens with today's results.
  20. I'm not going to over-worry about players getting hurt over a half-dozen games in November anymore than I did over the half-dozen games that were played this past March -- a worry-fest that proved to be the most over-played story of the Spring.
  21. My favorite WFAN call of the night: Met batters didn't hit tonight because they sub-conciously wanted to see how Trachsel would fare without the usual generous run support he's been getting
  22. - I'd certainly want to see Milledge back also. If nothing else he's a RH bat and a bit of speed when our bench doesn't have a whole lot of either. - No harm in bringing up Humber. He, like Pelfrey, was signed to a Major League contract meaning he's already on the 40-man and there are no option years "wasted" by bouncing him up. But I doubt he'll see much action (at least on the mound). May get into a game or two but is prolly here to soak up the atmosphere as much as anything. Plus, hell, we've already used 26 pitchers this season, another one can't hurt.
  23. Wright - 0.5 Bell - 1.3 Ring - 1.5
  24. Suggesting a trade of today's Atlanta 2nd baseman to the Dodgers for one of their young outfielders would be an Ethier-Orr proposition.
  25. Just a couple of nice running catches in CF that helped keep the game as close as it was. Worthy of a few sips.
