  1. Foul ball off his tootsie at some point in the middle of the game. Didn't leave immediately, but I guess it started barking more as time went on.
  2. Green hoping not to be DL'd. Sounds like he'll sit the weekend and be evaluated on the off-day Monday. Could be that he'll wind up being "swapped" for Alou by Tuesday if he can't play through it.
  3. OHernandez - 4.4 LoDuca - 2.2 Beltran - 0.8 Delgado - 1.0 Reyes - 0.6 Heilman - 0.4 Smith - 0.6
  4. A tale of two games: The first seven innings, and then the final two.
  5. This was maybe the sloppiest low-scoring (until the last half-inning anyway) game I've ever seen. - Wright not running out a ball - Delgado not running out a hit - LoDuca (and Delgado) running into outs - Beltran lazily getting to a hit and then missing the cut-off man - maybe another missed sign? (LoDuca & Gomez on a possible H&R) - Gomez not taking out the catcher in a situation that absolutely called for it And then the Marlins were at least as sloppy, plus most of thiers came all at once: bad defense, bad managerial decisions, bad throws, bad relievers.
  6. Posted mine prior to reading yours. Oh well.
  7. The radio call announces the speed of the first pitch (some sponsor tie-in) which, I assume, they get from the stadium display. So the radio says it's 87 MPH while the TV 'info strip' is showing 92 That's one of several reasons I don't pay a lot of attention to those things.
  8. * El Duque back tonight obviously. Haven't heard who has gone down but I assume it's the once-used Vargas * Mota (not an injury I realize) is eligible Wednesday and all indications are that he'll be activated then * Valentin - as early as late next week * Alou - Eligible to come off DL on Tuesday. Will work out at Shea on Monday and the decision could be made then * And there's been a Pedro sighting in South Florida. "Looking Good, feeling Good Bobby Ray" is the spin du jour. Will start throwing off a mound "in June" (which could mean 6 days from now ... or maybe 36). August 1st still seems like a good bet.
  9. Hey check out the avatar! It's whatisname ... that guy with the huge white shiny head ... and he's standing next to Mr. Met !!
  10. Well it seems that Mr. Gotay missed a couple of signs in the 9th on Thursday night. Willie apparently had the bunt sign ON for the first pitch, in part as a caution against Wickman's sinker and a possible GiDP. But he then took the bunt play off for the next (two, I think) pitches - hoping maybe for a anti-bunting fastball a la Chavez/Pettitte - but Gotay went right on bunting. WR: "Yes, he'll be fined"
  11. One of the problems with the bench is that when regulars are hurt (Alou, Valentin) your better bench players become temp starters (Chavez, Easley) and your bench is automatically weakened as minor leaguers are called up to replace them. The main - and more permanent - problems are that the backup corner IFer has little pop and that Newhan isn't hitting at all.
  12. IIRC Baldergroen had a real good half-season with us at Low-A -- but then hurt his wrist and missed a bunch of time and never seemed to be the same after that. Maybe the wrist has nothing to do with it and the half-season was just a small sample size. Either way, a small taste of success at a low level is always too early to list anyone as a 'Can't Touch'. This place gave that trade a few knocks at the time too, but I recall it as being more along the lines that Monkeywrench wasn't worth giving up [u:64528e2459]Any[/u:64528e2459] prospects for and that we'd be better off picking up a Travis Lee type who were available essentially for free.
  13. Edgy DC wrote: Is the bunt demonstrably the higher percentage play? Generic stats show that it's more or less a wash: 1st & 2nd, 0 Outs = 16.5% chance of scoring exactly 2 runs 2nd & 3rd, 1 Out = 21.8% chance of exactly two But that's a bit misleading in that you're stealing from the "two or more" categories, not the "one or less" Odds of scoring at least two runs = 42.1% (1st & 2nd, 0 outs) vs. 41.0% with 2nd & 3rd/1 out. And the other thing to consider is that those are the odds assuming that the bunt play works. Sometimes they don't. Personally, I don't like the bunt there down by two. If it was only one run I'm more OK with it. I'm more upset by using Franco to PH when Easley was available. It's not like there's another spot coming up that you're saving him for.
  14. Glavine 2.7 Schoenweis - 1.0 Heilman - 1.0 Beltran - 0.5 Gotay - 0.4 Delgado - 0.4
  15. I agree that Willie isn't one of the great arguers of all time, but arguing a ball/strike call is an automatic ejection and a big waste of time to boot. The only reason Willie was even heading out there was to lasso Wright before he got his ass run. Cox, on the other hand, is only a handful of ejections away from the all-time record.
  16. NOT EVEN CLOSE Horrible fuckin' call.
  17. We're getting some breaks here ... need to take advantage.
  18. Nuthin like following up a 20-minute half-inning by Glavine with a 90 second one from Smoltz
  19. Reyes Ks - now 0 for his last 14 He and Beltran carried us early, now both are ice cold.
  20. Reyes Chavez Beltran Wright LoDuca Delgado Green Gotay Glavine
  21. No, but he was also considered the best of that bunch and had numerous suitors prepared to offer him at least close to what he finally got. - Clement & Ortiz from that list turned out almost as awful - Benson, Wright, & Wells were better but still not worth their contracts
  22. Unlike some of the above, the Pavano signing didn't neccesarily look like a turkey when it first happened, and normally I'd say a pitcher getting hurt as often as he has been recently is a bit sad. But in this case - even though this injury is shirley real - Pavano has come off like a real ass practically since he showed up here, even to the point of admitting that he wasn't always working too hard to get back into action. It's cases like his which give fans the image of players getting the big contract and then sitting back and collecting. I'd be surprised if he ever pitches in the big leagues again even though he'll theoretically be healthy again at age 33.
  23. [u:6f3ef13c30]Final NYY totals[/u:6f3ef13c30]: 19 starts 111.3 Innings Pitched 5 wins - 6 losses 4.77 ERA 141 Hits 18 HRs 60 Ks 20 BBs 1 CG - 1 Shutout 1.45 WHiP
  24. Seems to me that we didn't hear this much about Roger's minor league tune-up sked while he was building toward his Astros debut last year. At one point in NY his minor league game was playing on both ESPN & ESPN2 simultaneously. It's this sort of overkill whenever something involves a NY team that drives the rest of the country nuts. He didn't pitch all that well btw in what may be his last tuneup before gracing the big club with his presence. Yanx take the condom game of the series. Pettitte good, Schilling not. Gap now at 9-1/2. The two teams will pick it up again in Boston first couple of days in June, and then not again until late August.
  25. Perez - 4.9 Wright - 1.4 LoDuca - 1.1 Smith - 0.7 Wagner - 0.7 Green - 0.5 Delgado - 0.4 Gomez - 0.3
