  3. ]I think there might be one ownership group that owns a lot of minor league teams. The are numerous groups that own more than one team - that was one of the reasons why the Mets lost Norfolk recently. The group that owned Norfolk also owned several others in that area and thought it would be best for them if as many of them could be affiliated with Baltimore as possible. The only restriction is that one owner can't own more than 1 team in the same league.

V, C & E have all had teams in recent years until all wound up selling out to operations south of the border, most recently when the Edmonton franchise was bought by Nolan Ryan and his group who moved them to Round Rock (Austin) Texas.
  5. Keep in mind that ML teams generally don't own their minor league affiliates so it's not a case of MLB simply choosing to "make it happen". If Ottawa is ceasing operations it means that the local owners who have the Int'l Lg franchise are opting, for whatever reasons, not to continue it and another owner/group would have to strike a new franchise agreement with minor league baseball before going fishing for a new ML affiliate. For the same reason it's also not as simple as the Mets just choosing to transform Brooklyn into a AAA team. The owners (in this case the Wilpons) don't have a AAA franchise.
  6. Boston hung on; AL East lead back to 7. Cleveland beat the Twins & Santana; extend their lead to 6 in the Central.
  7. I may have to change my vote from the 'Reyes or Wright - one or the other' thread that we had a while back. I said at the time that Jose's newly found OBP skills put him as the better long-term bet where previously I would have backed Wright. I think I'm changing my mind again.
  8. Martinez - 1.8 Alou - 2.2 Castillo - 1.5 Delgado - 1.9 Wright - 1.5 Green - 0.8 Mota - 0.3
  9. He's def put himself into the mix. But so are Rollins, Fielder, Utley, Holliday, Pujols. The final month will matter a lot.

  11. Brewers, Cubs & Cards all lose -- doesn't look like anyone wants that division. Brews pen blows another one after a decent start from Sheets. Cards get smacked by Pitt and are now not only without Encarnacion for the season but also Rolen who needs shoulder surgery. In Boston, Dice-K had a 10-1 lead and gave it all back. Now 13-10 Boston in the 8th.
  12. Final from the Bronx: Ms 7 - Ys 1 WC lead back down to 1 game. Geez if those fuckin Mariners could have won just occasionally over the last week and a half.

  14. Mets confirm that Duque will NOT start this weekend v Houston, meaning that Pelfrey gets at least one more go 'round and everyone gets extra rest due to Thursday's off day.
  15. 5-1 Braves is your final as Phils manage just 4 hits.
  16. See what happens when you put the ball on the ground Jose? Now rinse and repeat often.
  17. The shorthand on your scorecards should read: K3K
  18. My happiness today will be enhanced by an Atlanta win
  19. Several important in-division series get going today and lotsa good pitching matchups - Phils @ Braves Moyer v Cormier - Padres @ DBacks Maddux (who NEVER beats the Snakes) v Owings - Brewers host Astros Sheets & Oswalt hook up - Dodgers @ Wrigley Loaiza v Zambrano - Mariners @ Yanx Seattle trying to get back into the WC race despite losing 9 straight 12 y/o Felix Hernandez faces 57 y/o Roger Clemens - RedSox host Toronto at night (why Boston, why?) Matsuzaka v Litsch - Indians @ Twins Sabasthia & Santana - Tigers get the day off (why MLB, why?)
  20. Aaron Harang is a surprising 14-3, 3.51 ERA, 1.23 WHiP Pedro's very first Met game also came in Cincinnati. And, although he struck out 12 in 6 innings, that one didn't start particularly well (Adam Dunn 3R HR in the 1st) and didn't end particularly well either (Dunn & Randa HRs). Or, as origninaljb would say ... Looper! * It's 'Hammer' Time !!
  21. The latter would have a much better chance of happening if; a) the Mariners didn't pick now to go into a NINE GAME LOSING STREAK and/or the Tigers didn't insist on BLOWING SEVEN RUN LEADS like they did today.
  22. Do ya think we may have missed a couple between Jul 8 and Sept 1?
  23. Glavine - 3.5 Wright - 2.4 Alou - 0.7 Beltran - 0.6 Sosa - 1.0 Heilman - 1.0 Wagner - 0.5 Castillo - 0.3
  24. SteveJRogers wrote: Apparently he was drafted as the compensitory pick for Pedro Martinez! Which will be mis-interpreted by Met fans to mean that he would be a Met if not for the Pedro signing even though it was not a Met pick but rather a supplemental pick. The frequency that this mistake gets repeated will vary with the future success of Buchholz's career.
  25. Let's not go crazy pining for the '06 version of Bradford when not only is the '07 version not nearly as good [3.67 ERA v 2.90 and 1.46 WHiP v 1.16] but to get that '07 version we would have had to lock ourselves into the '08 & '09 versions as well. I didn't think not going for a contract like that was unreasonable. The problem was not opting out, it was giving it to Schoeneweis instead.
