  1. Now THAT is something you don't see everyday!! For those not watching ... Reyes's shot to LF got stuck *on the fly* in the padding of the fence where no one could find it for a while. Ground Rule Double is the call.
  2. Oh no, we have a lead!! Well at least it's not a big one, then we'd really be in trouble.
  3. And just for the record, my comment about getting a gun was; a) not directed at Reyes in particular but at the team in general - even though Reyes was mentioned in the subject heading and mostly an attempt (a lame one apparently) to play off the subject heading by following: woke up this morning with got myself a gun
  4. ... there's nothing much to talk about. The 4 playoff teams are essentially, even if not offically, set. The Tiggers lost again this afternoon completing a Cleveland 3-game sweep and pushing Detroit 5 out of the WC chase. So the only thing which really remains is the seeding. Boston - 62 losses; 10 games remaining Anaheim - 62 losses 9 remaining Cleveland - 62 losses 9 remaining Yanquis - 64 losses; 11 remaining And the Boston lead which was once 11.5 games (and even more on the Yanx) and 7 as recently as Sept 4, is now 2.5
  5. Well no one ever suggested catastrophic career collapse. I even acknowledged in the opening sentence that the subject heading was overdone for dramatic effect (I hate boring subject headings) and, no, I don't think Jose's season is akin to the last days of the Roman Empire. But 3/4 of a season is a bit more than a slump and is enough to start wondering if last year was the outlier rather than an upward step on a lengthy ladder.
  6. As noted, the point of the post wasn't to tear down Reyes or to assign him the lion's share of "blame" for the recent problems (he wasn't hitting while they were winning 10 of 12 either). But (also as noted) there has been a disconnect between Jose's image and reality for a while now - something the extrordinary April he had has been covering up. Now this isn't to suggest that this is the start of a years-long and irreversible downward trend, but it does throw some cold water on the idea that these trends were all but assured to point ever upwards for young players. And, yeah, the power outage does matter; it's a big part of what seperates him from the standard slick fielding/slashing type hitter mold. Since August 1st he's essentially a handful of XBHs (speed?) above what we had when some guy named Ordonez was manning his position. {Ordonez '99 = .258 / .319 / .317 / .061 / .059}
  7. OK, so the subject heading might be a bit dramatic. Still, age 24 is an odd time to go into a near year-long decline, particularly when it's the power numbers that are taking the biggest hit. ----BAOBASLGWalkIsoP2006.300.354.487.054.1872007.288.361.425.073.137Since May 1.274.374.391.070.117Since Aug 1.251.320.358.069.107Since Sept 1.210.279.290.070.081 To put those power number in a bit of context; - that .187 from last year is about what Eric Byrnes & Russell Martin are doing now - this year's power puts him in Freddie Sanchez & Edgar Renteria territory - and there's only a handful of full-time NL players who have an isolated slugging lower than the .100-.120 level he's been at since April Then throw in the fact that his speed, in effect, inflates his slugging numbers by turning what would be singles for most players into doubles or doubles into triples and he's really barely slugging at all ... but you probably already knew that.
  8. Meet Dr. James Andrews
  9. Willie especially needs to be second-guessed for those multi-year contracts he handed out to the lkes of Schoeneweis & Mota ... oh wait.
  10. Green - 1.8 Wright - 1.0 Alou - 1.0 LoDuca - 1.5 Conine - 1.0 Chavez - 2.0 Heilman - 0.5 Feliciano - 0.5
  11. Valadius wrote: As I said to Edgy at the game, that stuff Hershiser said about Maine not having the right look in his eyes or whatever ... I didn't make much of it until now, but now it speaks volumes. Problem is that that "look in the eyes" stuff didn't seem to affect Maine when he stepped up in a must-win NLCS game 6, or even just a week or so ago when he shut down the Braves in a game we absolutely needed coming off the earlier Phils' sweep. I'm always leery of those kind of "I can tell" pronouncements from analysts. I remember, for instance, how everyone in this town just KNEW that both Kenny Rogers & Jeff Weaver were going to melt in their 2006 playoff efforts on account of having to face NYC teams. Didn't quite work out that way.
  12. Pelfrey will pitch Wednesday. The outcome of the Phils/StL game isn't going to change anything.
  13. Phils don't score in the top. Looks like Schumaker, Barden & Taguchi to face Flash Gordon in bottom 9
  14. On to the 9th
  15. The Cards - working with their 7th pitcher of the game - got the Phils out 1-2-3 in the 8th. Cards are out-hitting the Phils 8-2 (who but LaRussa could use 7 pitchers to give up only 2 hits) but the score is still tied at 3
  16. IN-COMP-RE-HEN-SYBIL
  17. Headed for the 7th still tied. Russ Springer was the (4th) and most recent StL pitcher.
  18. CO-9 trying to be the hero keeps us alive. Now don't be the goat, Ty.
  19. Tied at 3 - bottom 6th
  20. Now all we have to do is score two or more runs off the only GOOD pitcher Washington has. IS THERE ANYBODY ALIVE OUT THERE?
  21. 4-0 early lead. No way does this team blow one of those ... oh wait.
  22. Any consideration of Steinbrenner has to start with the fact that he was twice banned from the sport for actions that were both unethical and illegal.
  23. They've recently re-jiggered the vets committee voting procedure so that the HoF players will now vote ONLY on players while the others: execs, umps, etc., will be dealt with by a special committee. The players had previously expressed a reluctance about judging anything other than players, something that came to light when many blank ballots were submitted even though Marvin Miller was eligible. So it's possible that some more non-playing types will be honored in the near future now that those near-automatic blanks won't factor in.
  24. Well, the first problem is that Reyes is no better than the 3rd best offensive player on his own team.
  25. I don't want to say he's been around a while, but in Julio Franco's 6th MLB game Froemming was working behind the plate for the 413th time!
