I was going to put up a picture of 'Hawkeye' from M*A*S*H for #14 since his full name was Benjamin Franklin Pierce ... but I wasn't around in time. Was trying to keep with the Presidential theme while sliding in a one step removed twist.

  3. Martinez - 2.7 Feliciano - 0.4 Heilman - 0.4 Wagner - 0.5 Beltran - 2.2 Alou - 1.8 Castillo - 1.0 Green - 1.0
  4. Football talk during baseball games annoys me. Particularly when it's solely to satisfy the gambling jones of an announcer.
  5. Today's trivia Q: - Two other pitchers - aside from Pedro - w/3,000 Ks born outside the U.S.A. I think I got 'em both (my guesses below before they provide the answer) Bert Blyleven Fergie Jenkins
  6. - Yanx up 3-0 in the 3rd as ARod's HRed again. That's 52 for the season and 7 in the last 5 games (actually 4-1/3) leaving him 20-some games to reach 62 and a NYY record. #49 got him the record as a 3Bman. Imagine if he was able to handle NYC pressure? - Boston up 2-0 in the 4th
  7. Mota quickly gets the natives restless
  8. Glavine - 4.8 Wright - 1.6 Green - 0.7 LoDuca - 0.7 Heliman - 1.2 Wagner - 1.0
  9. Met magic number drops again ... Honest!
  10. Today would be a good day to see a clean inning from Billy.
  11. Nice "save" by Heilman -- A bloop then 3 straight Ks A bit of a quick hook for Glavine if you ask me. You wouldn't think he was tired and the final hit which knocked him out was a soft bloop ... but I can't complain about the outcome.
  12. Well, you can all turn off the recording devices now.
  13. I voted for the Brewers - for no particular reason other than just a change of pace.
  14. Pelfrey - 1.6 Sosa - 0.5 Wright - 1.4 Milledge - 2.4 Beltran - 2.0 Alou - 1.2 Conine - 0.3 Castillo - 0.3 Mota - 0.3
  15. Well, Detroit draws first blood so I guess we're all Tigger fans for the remainder of the weekend and fuck those overpriced coffee sipping in the rain Mariners. Yanx trying to close out the Royals in the 9th - lead 3-2. 'Nother HR for ARod and two more scoreless innings for Joba the Hulk. Wonder what the record is for a scoreless streak to begin a career? I'm sure it's a lot bigger or we would have heard someone screaming about it from the rafters but he's now up to 14-2/3.
  16. Gary & Keithy acknowledged the Mushnick column tonight without specifically saying so. Gary: So Keith, how was your off day? K: Well, me and Lovey went down to ... then later after saying that one of his tasks was mowing the lawn G: You mean you mow your own lawn? K: Sure G: Well that might come as a surprise to some people Mushnick & his counterparts at the other papers: Raissman (NYDN), Neil Best (Newsday), Richard Sandomir (NYT), carry big sticks in this town and those being watched always know that they are no matter how much they want to pretend otherwise. I always get a kick out of Francesa & Mad Dog (who get relentlessly hammered by Mushnick) claiming they don't read those columns - but then knowing exactly when to fire back after they've been taken to task by one of them.

Yancy Street Gang wrote: I figure the money an athlete gets for making a TV commercial is, to him, what twenty dollars is to me. It's a lot more than that in many cases to the point where athletes can make a lot more (in total) via their endormsements than they do on the regular salary. It just seems to me that some of them don't know when to say NO. Tiger's big money comes from the equipment & clothing manufacturers he's associated with plus some companies that are closely linked to golf: Buick for instance; they sponsor several tournaments and Tiger never skips any of those. But his recent choices just seem like piling on and makes you wonder which ones he turns down. Jeter too is starting to be seen all over the place as a talking head in ads just as the real huge money on his deal has kicked in. And then, of course, there's the issue about those who do this stuff and then complain about their lost privacy.

I'm with Yancy on this one. I hear Tiger Woods doing these cheesy-sounding ads on radio about where he got his laser-eye surgery done: Hi, I'm Tiger Woods, and when it was time for me to have laser eye surgery the only place for me was ... and now we get to watch him shave on TV for some razor blade company and I'm thinking: does he really want the money THAT bad?
  19. Their view on Beltran is that he mis-led the Astros during negotiations. Personally I think it's really just an excuse to hate on a player who left - which is the same thing Met fans used Hampton's "good schools" line to do. The fact that Carlos left Houston for big, bad New York is just added reason to pile on. Needless to say, the folks on that board (and that guy in particular it seems) don't like New York in general or the Mets in particular very much and aren't shy about saying so. I personally find it amusing and would be disappointed if that vitriol were missing.
  20. The only thing I'm going to accuse John Sterling of - aside from a massive case of self-aggrandizement - is bad eyesight! He screwed ANOTHER homerun call the other day; this time describing a Jeter 2B as a HR before reversing himself a few seconds later when he finally realized that several OFers were chasing the rebound off the wall and all the baserunners were still sprinting. Most of the on-air FAN crew likes replaying Sterling calls for all sorts of reasons and it seems like he makes at least one egregious error per week.

  22. I think Keith is funny AND Mushnick is right.
  23. I read this on another board Yesterday Morning - a full half-day before the story broke. "The thing that amazes me most about [Ankiel] is how much he has transformed his body. I saw him up close and personal last week and he looks to be much stronger in his upper body and his lower body is much more lean. Good for him. He looks like he's worked very hard." No idea where or how this guy saw him "up close and personal" or how accurate his observations are, but that was almost freaky timing for a toss-off line in the middle of a fan board discussion. There's a lack of consensus about whether this HGH stuff really does anything for you athletic-wise, and that there appears to be only evidence that he received this stuff prior to the substance being banned means that there's likely little MLB can do officially. What it does do is trash all the feel-good stories this guy has built up over the last year or two and particularly over the last 6 weeks.
  24. But St Lucie loses in the 9th: Brevard County 7, St. Lucie 6 -- (Series tied 1-1) Trailing 6-1, Brevard County bounced back and scored four runs in the sixth and added two more in the ninth to knock off St. Lucie and even the series. Third baseman Mat Gamel went 3-for-4 with a double, and first baseman Chris Errecart hit a three-run homer in the sixth. Mets righthander Deolis Guerra allowed three runs on six hits over five innings.
