Teams do occasionally get away with telling players (rookies mostly) to accept a DL slot and to tell anyone who asks that you sprained your upper left McGoogle joint. But it is against various rules to do that and players can challenge the club if they think they're being railroaded and a vet like Perez would probably do just that. Besides, you can't play in minor league games while DL'd which kinda would defeat the whole purpose in this case.
  2. Q of the Day: Ramon Castro and Benjie Molina have a foot race with a pregnant woman. Will the final results have Castro 3rd and Molina 4th or the other way around?
  3. The one thing that usually allows Ollie to get away with all those walks is that he kept the ball in the park. Lately he's become HR-happy
  4. Braves win on a walk-off 2R HR from Yunel Escobar in the 10th
  5. Big Papi "out indefintely" with wrist injury Phils beat Reds despite Bruce's 2-4 'nother HR for Utley (21) Marlins & Braves tied at 5 in the 10th

  7. That 2005 draft is already being talked about as one of the great ones in history 1 - Upton (HS) 2 - Gordon 3 - Clement 4 - Zimmerman 5 - Braun 7 - Tulowitski 9 - Pelfrey 10 - Maybin (HS) 12 - Bruce (HS) 23 - Jacoby Ellsbury That's a lot of talent to be already making serious contributions at the big league level this quickly.
  8. ]Just because this is the first time the subject has a face doesn't mean that it has never been out there on the airwaves, in print, or on the internet. Lots of things are "out there" but when a long time baseball fan has never heard it brought up even once in over a decade it's tough to call it a long time "bone of contention". I mean I'm sure there are Yanqui fans who think Mantle's #7 should be retired in perpetuity -- (although, at the moment, I'm thinking of retiring it for Joe Mauer seeing as how he just hit one into orbit off Pettitte but that's a seperate story) -- but that doesn't make it a worthwhile topic.
  9. ]To be fair this has been a bone of contention since #42 was put away in perpetuity. And certainly since #99 was retired by the NHL in perpetuity for Wayne Gretzky Never heard it brought up. Not even once.
  10. ]This past offseason was the first of the 3 arbitration years. He and the Mets agreed to a 1 year, $2M deal to avoid an arbitration hearing. He is still under the Mets control for next year (and '10). And actually one year after that. Church was a "super 2" this season, meaning that he was one of those arb-eligible even though he was short of 3 years ML service time. (2 years + 152 days according to that Cot's site) But FA doesn't work that way - it's 6 full seasons or bust, so he'll be 3+ at the end of this season and still only 5+ at the end of 2010 -- meaning no soup for him until post-2011.
  11. Considering that he became known because he was a constantly complaining caller, then essentially won a contest to become a on-air host, and then is popular because constantly complaining callers identify with his constantly complaing persona ... I'd say his 'biggest idiot' status is pretty much a locked up title.
  12. Nothing not to like about the idea of signing Teixeira (except remembering how to spell his name for PotGs) but I've been hearing some classic 'Grass-is-Greener' spouting from Met fans (many of whom are finding a sympathetic ear in Joe Badabingo) talking about how we should get rid of this bum Beltran and get a REAL hitter like Teixeira. Except that here's a comparison for this season: ABH2BHRRBIBAOBASLG Beltran2015315634.264.368.458Teixeira2105714840.271.357.452 And this is 2006-2008 ABH2BHRRBIBAOBASLG Beltran1,2653468680262.274.371.542Teixeira1,3223859271255.291.380.526 That's about as close to a dead heat as you can get. Plus, one of these guys is a corner infielder (albeit a very good one) while the other is a top-notch CFer
  13. Santana - 4.2 Schoeneweis - 0.2 Feliciano - 0.2 Beltran - 1.35 Church - 1.35 Reyes - 1.35 Wright - 1.35
  14. He had a couple. That they were kind of rare is why we could blame it on the idea that he had been temporarily replaced by his evil twin. The Jay Bruce start caused me to go for a refresher course on Gregg Jefferies' intro. Not a bad first two weeks: 52 ABs; 24 hits; 7 2Bs; 2 3Bs; 5 HRs; 4 BBs; 3 Ks; .462/.500/.962
  15. ]. Dodgers are ALWAYS a huge draw at Shea, ALWAYS. And the Dodgers will always be a huge draw at Citi Field. Has nothing to do with the skipper. I'd be surprised if attendance for LAD games differed much from the overall norm at this point. They did in the early days of the Mets (as did the Giants) when there were still plenty of NYers who either missed 'em or hissed 'em. But now that they're gone over half-a-century I suspect most of either emotion has died out and attendance for them is nothing special and simply varies along with the normal conditions of weather, time, standings, etc.
  16. Willie NOT overdoing it here IMO. Smith's gotta get his guy and, because he didn't, you've got a dangerous lefty-swinging Loney up with the bases loaded. No place for Bazooka Joe in the 8th inning even with a 5 run lead.
  17. So he leaves with 1 run (plus two runners) on 6 hits - 5 of them singles and even the double (Pierre leading off the game) was nothing more than a well-placed bouncer - and two? walks thru 7-2/3. I'll take it.
  18. Would be really nice to see this lineup w/a healthy Church/Alou/Castillo for a sustained time added to the regular mix. Paticularly with a hotter Reyes leading it all off.
  19. Santana's really been fine all night -- I'll take 1 run over 7 anytime. The only thing that's making it seem troublesome for him is that he keeps letting the leadoff batter on. 5 times in 7 IPs I think.
  20. I think fans have a tendancy (one that seems to be growing) to over-analyze announcers to the point where they're looking for reasons to hate them and seeing slights against their team behind every comment. And although I'll cop to there being a handful of announcers who have gotten under my skin to the point where I'm yelling things at the TV and diving for the mute button (Fran Healy, Berman at times, and maybe one or two others) Miller & Morgan aren't even close to that level, and neither is McCarver.
  21. Santana using Santana music ('Smooth') for his AB entrance song.
  22. Castillo hasn't been on base yet but has hit the ball reasonably hard 3 straight times.
  23. We need to smack this Kuo dude around just because we owe him a few.
  24. Jay Bruce today: 2 for 3 w/2 RBIs including another HR
  25. I arbitrarily chose (prior to the 40-game checkup) to use +/- 15 games for a 'WAY' over/under description (and within 4 games for a 'CLOSE') so I'll stick with those for consistancy purposes.
