  1. Anthony Rendon, who has missed 68.3% of LAA games since signing his mega-contract prior to the 2020 season*, recently had a setback in his rehab and will now need hip surgery which will sideline him for a "significant" stretch in 20205 according to GM Perry Minasian. He has two HRs in his last 421 PAs and his contract runs through 2026 at $38 mil/yr I think we have a solid entry here for the worst contract EVER! * that's 257 games played over five seasons (one being the Covid year) for those of you scoring at home (or even if you're alone) His high for games played in one season with the Angels is 58 games/249 PA back in 2021
  2. - Alex Bregman said to be down to the Red Sox, Tigers, or Cubs as "multi-year deals" have been offered by each. - Clayton Kershaw re-ups with the Dodgers. Wasn't sure that was going to happen this winter and, considering it's "Pending a physical", it still might not. He last topped 30 starts/2000 IP in 2015 and pitched just 30 innings in 2024. It'll be his 18th season with LAD for the 37 y/o (in March) if this goes through. - Kenley Jansen to the Angels on a one year deal
  3. So this makes DJT a real man?!?!?!!
  4. FAs still out there. Not suggesting any of these as NYM-targets, just saying that they're 'Name' players still unsigned with ~ one week until P&C. 3B - Alex Bregman -- like Pete, Bregman (31 next month) is a Boras guy who likely thought the offers would be more forthcoming this winter SP - Nick Pivetta -- clubs seem unwilling to pony up for a 32 y/o pitcher w/compensation attached RP - David Robertson -- coming off a solid year tho turns 40 in April LF - Alex Verdugo -- lousy year for the Yanx in '24 (not a 'True Yankee' then) but was above average in the four previous seasons and still under 30 (29 in May) SS - Paul DeJong -- 31 y/o SS with pop (24 HRs in '24) and a glove but a sub-.300 career OBP. And, no, the Mets shouldn't sign him just so we won't have to face him. Pivetta and Bregman have the QO-rejection compensation tagged to them.
  5. "Likely"? Sure. But we all thought the other guy was likely too. btw, if Pete plays more or less everyday* and HRs at the same rate as last season, he'll reach Straw on or about Game 129. I didn't dig through the schedule to find out exactly when that is. * as he has for almost his entire career to date. He's appeared in 846 out of a possible 870 games played from 2019-24 (over 97%) Not saying that his luck is 'due to run out' or anything but he has been remarkably fortunate so far, especially with 85 HBPs
  6. Just sayin'. We were sure it was going to happen for Wright ... and then it didn't happen. Right now Pete is a slightly down year or a several week stay on the IL from not reaching Straw this year. And we won't know if there's even going to be a second season until after this one.
  7. I remember how sure we all were that David was going to break Straw's record.
  8. I'm just glad that Pete & Boras read my post at the top of this page and came to their senses. Now compare this final agreement to the reported seven year deal he turned down (fall/winter '22?) or to the variety of proposals floated (both from within this forum and from various outside sources) on the early pages of this thread. The only thing constant is change.
  9. I can live with that!!!!
  10. Yeah, it's tough to see what the Pete/Scott end game is here. Any offer that tops the Mets offer, or one they will potentially offer to match, isn't likely to top it by much as owners don't seem to get tricked into bidding against themselves nearly as much these days. So is Pete prepared to go with the highest bid even if that bid is only nominally better and it winds up landing his Floridian butt in Canada*? Or will he take the bid which takes him away from his publicly stated preferred choice simply out of spite that the Mets didn't offer higher? You've got to wonder whether the stress and uncertainty of waiting out these last few months is going to be worth 'winning' whatever winds up as the cherry-on-top winning salary. * even if they do have lots more actual Polar Bears there
  11. I'll take 'Sentences Never Typed Before Ever' for $600', Ken.
  12. Always the 'best' expressions of contrition: "I wish it never happened". Not 'I wish I never did what I did', but "... it never happened". As if "it" was an act not completely of his doing.
  13. Holden Caulfield
  14. Rich Dauer - 10 year (1976-85) career as a 2B/3B, all with Baltimore, including their 1983 WS team - 72
  15. The group of owners who banded together for the purpose of ousting Fay Vincent (Fred was among the anti-Fay clan, as were Selig, Reinsdorf, and enough others to carry the day) were mostly (possibly entirely?) Jewish. Not that the religion of the owners in the group had anything to do with it, but that didn't stop the WASPish Nelson Doubleday from calling Fay after the coup was a fait de accompli to say, "Looks like the Jew Boys got you".
  16. I wonder if it was the Jew boys that got him?
  17. Is it still Friday?!?
  18. I've heard several stories of sports-obsessed (or at least TV-sports obsessed) parents naming their kid(s) Espn or Espen There may be more idiotic things in the universe but it would take me quite a while to come up with one.
  19. A little secret I've learned over the years about ballpark food and merchandise ... you don't have to buy that stuff!!
  20. Is it still Friday?
  21. Plus, he and Winker keep the team's hair game in solid contention.
  22. One day we saw Ryne Sandberg on TV and only then did I realize that my son had no idea who he was. He thought his coach was calling him "rhino" the whole time. 'Daddy, why does the coach think I have a big nose?'
  23. I would argue that the first victim was Mike Vasil, whom the Rays took in the Rule V Draft. If he gets returned by the Rays, does he have to be added to the Mets 40 man roster? Yes. Or at least he has to be exposed to waivers before being sent down. If he doesn't , can he be sent to the minors without going through waivers? Answered above. He was available through Rule 5* because he couldn't be sent down without clearing waivers. Changing teams doesn't change that. Otherwise teams would swap players back and forth as if an MLB version of money laundering. * btw, it's Rule 5, not Rule V
  24. So this is 71 years of serial MLers named Ryne, covering 1954 - 1965; 1981 - 1997; and 2017 - 2025
