  1. That's two NL managers in one week. Pitt interim Don Kelly celebrated his ascendancy by getting ejected from his 2nd game earlier this week. Frustration obviously builds quickly by the rivers x 3. btw, because he's been dubbed an 'interim' mgr, BB-Ref is still tallying Pitt's Ws & Ls to ex-skipper Derek Shelton. All sports seem to do that, not just baseball (there was the one year Steve Kerr had health issues and Luke Walton coached nearly a full season but with no stats to show that) but I don't understand the philosophy behind it. Speaking of the Pirates (as we will certainly be doing a lot of over the next three days) 'twas nice of them to take two of three and slow down the Braves this weekend. All were low scoring games (even without Skenes pitching any of them): 3-2 Braves on Fri, then 3-2 Pirates yesterday and 4-3 Pirates this afternoon.
  2. The Rockies won today (vs Padres), their seventh win of the season and broke an eight game losing streak.. But even against that backdrop this has been a pretty brutal week at the Rock Pile. Over the previous six games their staff allowed 72 runs! while COL bats combined for 21 That's an average of 12 RA/G for you non-math dudes. Sun 5/4 in SF: 3 - 9 At home vs DET Wed: 6 - 8 in 10 innings Thu (G1): 2 - 10 Thu (G2): 1 - 11 Home vs SDP Fri: 9 - 13 Sat: 0 - 21 Today: Rox 9 - Pads 3 Now 7 - 33 and on pace for a 28 - 134 season
  3. Baty is suddenly pulling a Vientos circa 2024 I DEFY you to send me back down!!
  4. I predict we'll see a Soto hit w/RiSP before the season is out. Maybe even more than one.

When he told the parents 'Last question and I'll let you get back to watching your son' my thought was, 'yeah, 'and you could let US get back to watching their son (and the other guys on the field) too'! Network sports programming has this odd notion that we tune into a game to watch the people who are there watching the game.
  6. Well, he didn't give up a gopher ball.

  9. I think Taillon is gonna wanna tie one on after tonight's game.

  11. Looks like we're going to see the ML debut of one Cade Horton in Saturday's game. 1st round/7th overall draft pick in 2022 by the Cubbies out of U Oklahoma Cubs #2 prospect and has been top-30 overall. 1.24 ERA across 6 starts in AAA Iowa this year. https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=horton000cadhttps://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=horton000cad
  12. Derek Shelton is out as manager of the 12 - 26 Pirates following two (comparatively) good 76 - 86 seasons in '23 & '24. 306 - 440 since starting the Covid 2020 season. Yeah, I'm sure it was his fault.
  13. Tommy Hutton was the oft-cited GTS nemesis mainly because he was .320/.435/.540 // 975 [50 ABs] despite being a .247/.340/.333 // 674 career hitter overall
  14. From a human being's point of view I was thinking along the same lines as the bots Grimm consulted: that I don't remember any such quote or anything like it ... but it kind of sounds like something he'd say. Seaver was definitely a big fan of a sort of rough locker room humor but I'm not sure he always noticed that not everyone within earshot of what he said was in on the joke. For instance I don't know that there's anyone who enjoyed his annual Cooperstown weekend more than him while he was still able to attend and a gathering of members of a super-elite club is just where you'd expect to find that sort of putdown-as-sport talk. Two examples I remember him relaying: - Chicago slugger Billy Williams, who Seaver often had trouble getting out, used to bring his brother along. The brother didn't play MLB but apparently looked a lot like Billy. While checking in Seaver notices the brother across the lobby and yells, 'I hate your brother AND I hate you for looking like him'. - GTS at one point is sitting at a table with several other pitchers all of whom were 300 game winners. Along comes Bob Gibson and starts to pull up a chair when Seaver launches into, 'Oh No! You're not qualified to sit here. Go find someplace else.' Now I expect those on the receiving end of those barbs took them in good humor and probably dished it out as well as Tom did. But that doesn't necessarily hold true for those who might have overheard it and/or simply weren't in with the in-crowd, and I don't know that Tom always turned that side of himself off when not among an exclusive gathering of gods-on-earth.
  15. After 38 games last season they were 18-20 and already 9 games out of 1st ... but the bad was just getting started. They'd win their next game (salvaging 1 of 3 from ATL) but then go 3 - 13 to sit at 22-33 / .333 win pct and 16 G off the pace of the 39-18 Phils at the conclusion of the games of 5/29 It got a bit better after that.
  16. =metirish post_id=192006 time=1746717976 user_id=72] Sunday's Mets-Cubs broadcast will be on Roku, with Gary Cohen and Joe Girardi on the call.
  17. Cubs: 22-16, 1st place NLC, 3.0 G ahead of Cincy - They score a lot, 5.87 R/G (NL Avg = 4.53) tops in either league - About average pitching so far but are now dealing with several starters out, Shota Imanaga and Justin Steele most notably, and Saturday's starter is listed as TBD - Pete Crow-Armstrong is giving them power, speed, and defense even as his free swinging ways keeps the OBA down (.303)
  18. Braves lose today (Reds); Phils win (Rays); Nats lose (Guardians); Marlins lose (Dodgers) Yanx tied 3-3 headed to the 10th with the Pads ... and the fuckin' Pads leave the bases loaded in top 10th without scoring.
  19. It's Juan Solo! (amIrite folks?) Six of Soto's seven HRs this year have been solo jobs. And four of the seven have come in two games.
  20. =ashie62 post_id=191962 time=1746653319 user_id=90] =ashie62 post_id=191961 time=1746653205 user_id=90] Jeff looked like he was going to fall into third base Well done
  21. Start squeezing out strikes Or at least start squeezing out something! [FIMG=300]https://media.pitchfork.com/photos/62fbd9cd9e909489fa5fb568/1:1/w_320,c_limit/Graham%20Parker%20-%20Squeezing%20Out%20Sparks.jpeg[/FIMG]
  22. And now thru 3 innings Senga has retired just six hitters. So he's getting the job done but how he's doing it is hardly a recipe for success.
  23. Good News (so far): - Multiple hard-hit balls even if not always in the right places - good defense Not so good: - Senga is wild (now 4 BBs thru 9 hitters) , and he needed almost 40 pitches to retire just four batters thru 2 (the defense retired the other two) - two leadoff doubles (2nd & 3rd) but no hits followed and only one ball out of the infield (Pete's weak FO to left w/2 outs)
  24. =roger_that post_id=191916 time=1746632828 user_id=128]Pete's ratio has returned to its historic norm, more Ks than BBs.
  25. =roger_that post_id=191867 time=1746573236 user_id=128] .292/.391 over 2,500 PA over six+ seasons as a Met I've always numbered the Mets' disappointment with Magadan among their many errors of judgment. Yeah, he didn't field as well as Keith (like anybody has?) and his hitting wasn't absolute top-rank, but he was a decent first baseman and they should have hung on to him and repaired some positions where they had terrible players instead. They have a history of making this mistake, failing to recognize some good home-grown players who fell short of star status, and getting rid of them because of their frustration.
