Few players hit the draft with fully realized power, and fewer still become productive big leaguers. I mean, fear Jason Tyner, sure, but fear Rob Stratton, too. Yeah, the counterpart to the 'speed but no power' description is the one you often read about a prospect who has tons of power but at the same time "has some swing and miss to his game", and I don't think there's an accurate road map to determine which end of that theoretical spectrum is more likely to succeed. The knock on Tyner, in retrospect, (I mean aside from the fact that he didn't turn out to be good enough but that happens to all kinds of picks) was that he never showed signs of being the classic ball-hawking CFer that would fit his slap-hitting speedster model. Brett Butler had a good and lengthy career but it wouldn't have been much of either had he not been a top-notch defensive player for much of that time.
  2. 1) Mike Baxter LF 2) Kirk Nieuwenhuis CF 3) David Wright 3B 4) Lucas Duda RF 5) Daniel Murphy 2B 6) Ike Davis 1B 7) Mike Nickeas C 8) Omar Quintanilla SS 9) Jeremy Hefner RHP Anyone who submitted this lineup at the beginning of the year for the starting nine on May 29th please step up to the window and collect your Billion Dollar prize.
  3. The throw WAS there on time. If he hangs the base he gets the force and almost certainly the DP It looked beforehand that he was yelling for the throw to go directly to 1st and therefore didn't expect it and wasn't set.
  4. [responding to SS] Isn't it also the case that the doomed-to-failure tactics* depicted in the end was in reality as much the decision of Aussie brass as it was British but the movie essentially saddles it all on the British to better fit the film's narrative and possibly also to feed into nationalism you describe? * Of course most of WWI was fought with 19th century tactics in the face of 20th century weapons so this wasn't just a problem unique to Gallipoli
  5. The Dodgers also played a handful of "home" games in New Jersey for a time during their Brooklyn years but I think that might have been a different stadium. I believe it was in Newark.
  6. On the one play where David failed to stay on the base for the throw I think it was more a case of him not thinking the throw was coming his way then him bailing out early for fear of spiking. Not that he still shouldn't have been ready for it and failing to hold the base did lead directly to the tie-breaking run but, other than that, there wasn't much of a sample size to form a true opinion.
  7. Ramirez - 0.5 Egbert - 0.2 Rauch - 0.5 Hairston - 2.0 Rottino - 2.0 Torres - 0.5 Duda - 0.1 Nieuwenhuis - 0.2 Johnson - 0.2

  10. From MLB.com which lists him as #33 on their board (hmmm, right about where we pick). If teams are looking for a top-of-the-order catalyst with speed, then they might head to Stony Brook, N.Y., in droves this spring. That's what Jankowski has to offer. He has excellent hitting skills, showing the ability to spray line drives to all fields, albeit without much power. He's got above-average to plus speed and combining that with good reads and jumps on the basepaths, he's a big-time basestealing threat. His speed helps him on defense as well, where he has outstanding range to go along with very good instincts in center field. His arm is playable in center and his accuracy makes up for average arm strength. Jankowski knows who he is as a player, a very aggressive speedster who knows how to bunt, get on base and wreak havoc with his legs. Teams looking for a basher will look elsewhere, but Jankowski's tools will definitely get a long look as June approaches.
  11. Metsblog quotes NY Post's Mike Puma as saying that Turner is headed to the DL list (duh!) and Acosta to DFA limbo. Schwinden, already on the 40-man roster, takes Turner's spot while Quintanilla moves into Acosta's spot on the 40 and graduates to the 25 at the same time. Terry apparently doesn't view Valdespin as a SS while Tejada (along with Thole & Bay) just started today in extended ST games although only at bat and not yet in the field.
  12. Bottom line is we got a bad (or at least erratic) outing from the starter, bad days from the 3 & 4 hitters, a bad day by the defense (courtesy of those same 3 & 4 hitters) and a bad day from most of the bullpen. Not gonna win a lot of games that way. One of the over-looked plays was Wright coming off the bag during a potential force at 2nd. He seemed to think Parnell was going to 1st on the tapped come-backer and then was unprepared for the throw when it came his way. If he hung on the bag not only would he have gotten the force but probably the DP as well. Instead that runner became the go-ahead run.
  13. Cedeno's only day-to-day (may even be available for Tuesday) so it's not like we have to jump through hoops to get two SS in here. Even if Wright has to start there for one game and then be the only back-up for a week until Tejada returns that wouldn't be the worst thing.

Except that now, as a FA, he is free to take the best offer and I'm not sure being warehoused in Buffalo until and if he's needed is going to be the one he jumps on.
  15. Gotta keep this close here so we can see which NYM scrub's turn it is to beat Papelbon

  17. O.Q. is NOT on the 40-man so some dancing will be required to get him up here. Tejada probably still needs a week or more.
  18. Edgy DC wrote: Edgy DC wrote: Is Torres available today? Because if he's not, Baxter and Nickeas are all that's on the bench. Let me ask this one again, because the righthanded Torres would strike me as perhaps an alternative for centerfield. Not sure. Where did the birthing take place? If in NYC he might be. If he went back to Puerto Rico or something ...
  19. Edgy DC wrote: I smell ACL surgery. It's a real soccer injury and trying to stay alive in a rundown is pretty soccer-like. He seemed to pull a hammy in his left leg then jammed the right one lunging for the bag. It was the right one he couldn't put weight on while being helped off.
  20. Frustrating game so far in that Niese is over 100 pitches even while giving up just one hit. Lots of deep counts, those two 1st inning errors, plus several seemingly out-of-the-blue 4-pitch walks are taking their toll on the pitch count. Hamels, meanwhile, has surrendered four hits but is under 50 pitches.

  22. Yo Quintanilla, get to the airport ASAP!

Were six games above .500 as late as July 18th - after being as many as 11-over at several points in June. After 7/18 they went 30-40 over the final 70 that year.
  24. As long as none of the others were named Donald, then probably.
