  1. It seems that they (and I don't know if 'they' means Mendy or someone(s) above him) pre-decide to leave the starter in to start an inning but then take him out as soon as the first hitter gets on base (as they did with Peterson tonight) or not. But it seems like they did. When they pulled Peterson it was the bottom of the order coming up and the O's had a slew of LH batters on their bench. Peterson, even a tiring one throwing pitches 90-100+, felt like a MUCH better bet than did any RH'er you'd bring in with a conga line of Bal'mer LHB's available to PH. It just didn't make sense. If you bring in a righty the O's would obviously go to Gunnar Henderson et al and negate whatever advantage you thought you were getting. And, if you want to stick with a lefty for that same reason, who in the current pen is a better LH option than D. P.? I'll answer that, NOBODY!
  2. Even better than 'Fury' is 'Fiore' Gene Tenace was born not Fury Eugene Tenace but Fiore Gino Tennaci (I think he was Irish but I could be wrong) in Russellton, Pennsylvania 1946 Tenace/Tennaci finished his career with just a .241 BA but also a .388 OBA and a .429 SLg average (136 career OPS+), a walk rate (he led the AL in walks twice) and SLG rate well above average in both cases and both are ridiculously good for a catcher who played during the pitching friendly era of 1969-83, finishing his career with a 136 OPS+
  3. So two starters [Holmes / Peterson] plus those five relievers available all along ... and then 28 spare parts.
  4. Is that overall or just this season?
  5. Rizzo is the bigger WOW!! of that duo. He snagged them some good talent in the Scherzer & Soto trades and also via the draft. And while they're not good now, there are some pieces there to build around.
  6. Have Yanqui hitters agreed with a single called strike today?
  7. So [CROSSOUT]Senger[/CROSSOUT] Torrens to lead off bottom 9, then the top. So you're telling me there's still hope?
  8. Yes, Richardson's gotta help. But Lindor should know/act better.
  9. Yeah. You can't blame Lindor for being so close to 2nd (he's a force out at 2nd if Bellinger short-hops that one otherwise) but the non-slide back into 1st is the issue. Did he think [it] wasn't going to be a close play?
  10. Could have been better ... but we're chipping, we're chipping.
  11. Mauricio vs Loaisiga Two guys with eight letter names, five of which are vowels. 1st time ever in MLB history? Probably not, and definitely too trivial to even care about. I have no idea why I even noticed this, but I thought I'd share/inflict it with/on youse guys.

  13. =Cowtipper post_id=197379 time=1751828809 user_id=166] Stearns signs all these junk pitchers thinking they'll all be diamonds in the rough but it doesn't work that way. They're always good for 5-10 games then they fall apart. That's why they're junk pitchers and not established major leaguers.
  14. After Goldschmidt's rather sudden plummet over the past two seasons [OPS+ from 177 to 120 to 98] one wonders whether his hot start this season was less a late career (age 37 season) resurgence and more akin to a dead cat bounce. April OPS = 878 May = 904 June = 464
  15. Bobby Jenks was huge, both personally [listed at 6' 4" / 275 - and was every bit of that] and as a rookie out of the pen for the ChiSox WS team of 2005 My one over-riding memory from that post-season was the time Sox had two right-handers warming up in the pen. When manager Ozzie Guillen signaled for a reliever the crew in the pen didn't know which one. Ozzie, seeing their confusion, spread his arms out wide to indicate the big dude and the pen immediately knew what he meant. Typical high octane reliever in a lot of ways. Capable or dominant outings but, like a lot of that type, walked too many and ultimately had a short prime and short-ish career. A seven season career, six with white socks on and his final one wearing red socks, but was done by age 30. 44 y/o
  16. Final 'Subway Series' game of the year ... unless there's one of those World Series things later on. 1:40 start, SNY. Be there or be square and, as always, those who are late do not get fruit cup. Currently Mets 3 - Yanx 2 which pretty much says you need to know about how nice it would be to take this one. The pitching matchup is decidedly NOT going to be in our favor [Max Fried vs Pick-out-of-a-hat] but it hasn't been in our favor in at least three of the previous four games either and yet we've managed to score 28 runs [7 - 3 - 6 - 12] over those four games while allowing only 16 so put that in your pipe and smoke it.
  17. So that's two fair-to-good outings from Montas [5 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 3 BB, 5 K] and [5.2 IP, 4 R, 5 H (2 long, 3 cheap), 0 BB, 2 K] sandwiched around one horrid one [4 IP, 6 R, 7 H, 2 HR] where he may or may not have been tipping his pitches. If a bunch of guys suddenly get healthy and return to early season form enough to push him out of the rotation, that's fine. But that's both unlikely and not going to happen anytime soon even if it actually does. So, until then, the kid stays in the picture.
  18. Multiple extra base hits ... non-solo HRs ... no walks issued until the 8th inning ... double digit runs scored [FIMG=400]https://i.guim.co.uk/img/media/30a0cd936b6bef0ae1469b34ae7bebd565404f8f/0_16_1884_1129/master/1884.jpg?width=1900&dpr=1&s=none&crop=none[/FIMG] Who are those guys?
  19. That was a LOT of pitches for a one run inning. But, in the end, it was just a one run inning.
  20. I was going to remark, after the Nimmo GS, that the post-HR dugout 'picture' had pretty much replaced the obligatory curtain call. But Pete just took a call following this one. But the fact that it's no longer automatic is, I think, a good thing. Getting Nimmo out just gave this kid a non-infinite ERA. OK it's 108.00, but at least it's a real number rather than an abstract.
  21. Welcome to the big leagues, kid.
