  1. Apparently you CAN get thrown out even after a replay review. Boston mgr John Farrell does the trick.
  2. The Venezuelan infielder Yangervis Solarte who's been filling in for the Yanx at several positions is Roger Cedeno's nephew and counts Edgardo Alfonzo as a mentor. I'm gonna root against him anyway.
  3. Ashie62 wrote: Chris Young is going to have to work his way into an effective OF.... Of the current OF, really only Lagares can make any kind of claim at being "effective". Yes, but you're not the manager. It's well known that Terry likes Eric. I think it's possible that Terry only likes EYJ as compared to the alternatives since he arrived last summer. If C. Young ever shows up healthy and ready to go and Granderson actually starts hitting at some point, TC might find himself falling out of love rather quickly.
  4. Padres still open if any of you west coast types (or anyone else for that matter) want to jump in.

  6. I wonder if serving three in a row up to guys in their 20s (Trout), 30s (Pujols) and 40s (Ibanez) in that order is a first?
  7. Angels say: "get a whiff of that Colon" Or, more grammatically: "Get a whiff of that, Colon"
  8. The 8 walks vs just 10 Ks is an impressive ratio (SSS alert at always)
  9. It's a small sample size of course (so were the stats leading up to this point) but a nice recovery by the LHRs on Saturday ight/Sunday morning. Rice & Lannan faced a combined total of eight batters and retired all of them, more batters than they had gotten out the entire season before yesterday. Valverde on the other hand ... During my year-long look at closers last season, only 3% of three-run/one-inning saves were blown (10 times in 318 chances) and I'd be willing to bet that few if any in that situation are EVER blown after two are out and none on. My brother's friend e-mailed him right after that about Papa Grande "pulling a Benitez" but my comment was that, after even a partial season of Valverde closing, he's going to be wishing for the days of Armando.
  10. Ryan Zimmerman - broken thumb (sliding back into 2nd while being picked-off) DL'd, 4 to 6 weeks Denard Span - 7-day concussion DL And then there's the ongoing problem where they couldn't beat the Braves last year (6-13) and they can't beat them this year (1-4)
  11. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: A shortstop who could also lead off makes so much sense for this team, especially if you are expecting C Young to contribute starting next week. Perhaps Gregorious leaves PHX with us. We'd have to stop in Reno to pick him up. He played just the two Australia games with the big club and has been in AAA since getting back.
  12. Ibanez HRs in his 20s = 33 Ibanez HRs in his 40s = 42
  13. Can't be walking Aybar there. Hell, groove three to him, the most he's going to do is hit a double and, even if he does, you're no worse off facing Ibanez they you are with the walk.

And that close-and-late clutchitude is a little salt in any wound opened up by Q's defensive performance, innit? Yup. Not that I think in the long run that Q is going to be more of an offensive force than Tejada, but I am starting to wonder about a defensive gap being more permanent.
  15. The walks ratio is completely flipped tonight. OK it's not 10-0 like it was in game 1 of this series, but it is 6-1, in the Mets favor this time, and not surprisingly it's making a huge difference. and now an HBP
  16. So how often do you suppose that this Jepsen reliever gets teased that his manager will 'call him maybe' about coming in to the game?
  17. Edgy MD wrote: Yeah, nice to see Ruben playing with confidence out there. Except that it's Q out there tonight.
  18. I don't want to say that these DPs wouldn't have been turned with Ruben in there ... but given his play of late I'm not so sure they would have been. All that last one would have taken is a split second hesitation and suddenly inning over morphs into tying run on 1st w/Prince Albert coming up.
  19. I'm totally buying into the church of Trout and was sure he was going to snag that Recker hit ... and was convinced he was going to steal the Duda HR earlier on for that matter. I heard this reliever, Michael Kohn, is tough ... but his brother Ghengis, now there was a nasty pitcher.
  20. Getting one-hit thru six = not good Having two of the base runners we did get thrown out on the base paths = even worse
  21. Our lefty relievers to date have faced 15 hitters and retired 6 of them. 12 of those 15 hitters were LHBs, 2 were RHB + 1 switchy Rice: 7 batters faced over 4 outings Outing #1) Walk #2) Single - Sac Bunt - Single #3) Groundout - Strikeout #4) Single Lannan: 8 batters faced over 3 outings #1) Walk - HR - Groundout #2) Strikeout - Single - Groundout - HR #3) Single So in sum that's 2 walks, 7 hits (5 singles + 2 HRs), 3 groundouts, 2 strikeouts, 1 Sac Bunt (aka: trying to make an out) Now I may have to study this topic in a little more depth before I go off making some half-cocked statements, but my preliminary conclusion is that this isn't very good.
  22. Torres - 0.5 Farnsworth - 0.3 d'Arnaud - 1.5 Satin - 2.0 Granderson - 0.7 Murphy - 0.5 EYoung - 0.5 Brown - 0.5
  23. NYM pitchers walked TEN in this game (OK two were intentional, but still) and famously plunked one to boot, while NYM batters walked nonce. Considering that, plus the fact that LAA left 17 on base while Met LOBsters were just four, it's probably lucky (or maybe just more frustrating) that the game was as close or as long as it was.
  24. Lagares's earlier throw probably kept the runner on 2nd there. Would have preferred he try it though. This one goes to (at least) eleven.
  25. Ceetar wrote: Frayed Knot wrote: But over-aggressive is what he certainly has NOT been so far this season. More like a guy who's so afraid of making a mistake that he's content just to get one out and doesn't even try for two. I meant aggressive in the sense that like that last play when it was maybe wise while running for a dribbler to just take the safe play at first, still flips off-balance to second. or throwing to third the other day. It's gutsy and aggressive. He's never had the greatest hands, part of what makes him only an average SS defensively. Going to 2nd was the right move there, he just didn't do so very well. It's like he's morphing in front of our eyes from a SS who was unspectacular but dependable to one who is unspectacular and not very dependable.
