  1. I wouldn't mind Chris Young getting back as soon as possible and see Eric get hisself some bench time.
  2. I, on the other hand, kind of liked it. Not much of a plot to be sure (the Coens even said that they threw in the cat just to offer at least the hint of one) but I enjoyed the little slice of life about a sad sack guy trying hard to make it in a tough business only to find that not only is everything going wrong for him over the few day period of the movie but that it's all about to get a whole lot tougher. Apparently some of the folkies still around from that era were disappointed that the movie was too much of a downer and didn't depict enough of the positive spirit of the times, and also that the main character was about as un-Van Ronkian as one can get despite his memoir being the germ for the movie.
  3. I think it's pretty clear that Alderson was hired [u:1i0cx1hn]because of the Madoff mess[/u:1i0cx1hn] and certainly not despite it or for reasons unconnected to it.
  4. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Everybody please remember, when voting for Eric Young it's "EYoung", not "Young". Assuming we ever actually see Chris Young come to bat this year.
  5. Colon - 4.5 Farnsworth - 0.6 Valverde - 0.3 Tejada - 1.7 d'Arnaud - 1.7 EYoung - 1.2
  6. Supposedly there should be convincing evidence that the call was wrong before you overturn it. Tonight's example was so far from convincing that I didn't think it would be reversed. But that's part of what's proven to be a problem with replay as it's existed in other sports: you can say all you want that it'll only be used for 'X', or that it's purpose is only to overturn obvious incorrect calls, or that reviews will be limited to a certain amount of time; but that's all like trying to stay slightly pregnant. Once you get into that box then it's only natural that it starts to be used as if a microscope to examine the smallest minutia. I only hope we don't get to the place where football is now where the refs acknowledge that the receiver has the ball in his arms but they then spend five minutes trying to determine whether it's moving around within his arms too much and therefore he never has "control". If some replay determines that a runner was safe on 1st because, even though the ball hit the mitt prior to the foot hitting the base, because the ball was moving from the pocket to the web when the foot came down they're going to rule the runner safe, I'm going to have a problem.
  7. A not very pleasant folk singer in early '60s Greenwich Village roams the coffee shops and record offices looking for ways to jump-start his career, but instead manages to be more successful in annoying and mooching off people along the way.
  8. Personally, I wouldn't have overturned that call based on what I saw. But there's no harm in Terry asking (since he couldn't force the issue as it was past the 6th inning) The first call we got overturned I was jumping up and down screaming for the replay as it first happened. That one was a lot more obvious.
  9. A 1-hour program currently making the rounds on ESPN (under their 'E-60' program) examining all the perfect games in MLB history - or at least the ones that exist on film. Kind of cool. The pitchers talk about what they were doing, what they were thinking, and so on. Showed also a couple of the near misses (Mussina, Pedro, Gallaraga) There have been 23 in total. 2 were in the 1800s and 3 more happened by 1922 But then there were none after 1922 until Larsen's in the '56 WS Of the 18 in the era starting with Larsen, every living author of a PG (only Catfish is no longer around) appeared on the show ... with the exception of the always ghost-like Sandy Koufax and the always surly Kenny Rogers. Helps of course that so many of them were recent. Don Larsen - 1956 WS Jim Bunning - 1964 Sandy Koufax - 1965 Catfish Hunter - 1968 Len Barker - 1981 Mike Witt - 1984 Tom Browning - 1988 Dennis Martinez - 1991 Kenny Rogers - 1994 David Wells - 1998 David Cone - 1999 Randy Johnson - 2004 Mark Buehrle - 2009 Dallas Braden - 2010 Roy Halladay - 2010 Philip Humber - 2012 Matt Cain - 2012 Felix Hernandez - 2012
  10. - Murphy was at least partially to blame for Valverde's error. That's the SS play there and I think Murph being on the base also screwed him up a bit. First he double-clutched, then he threw wide and to the wrong side of the base. - What scares you about this Braves offense, especially in a game like this, is that, as streaky as they are, EVERY ONE of the guys in their lineup (and several on the bench) have not just the ability to hit the ball out of the park but have double-digit/year type HR power. That's quite a weapon to have as Yanx fans are going to find out due to their LACK OF that weapon after taking it for granted for so long. Oh, and I need a drink!
  11. Mets have lost Pedro Beato twice (not signing him after the draft and then trying to get him thru waivers). Both times it was the cause of intense wailing from Met fans, but they've yet to be burned by it.
  12. Not gonna win this one.
  13. I know I was home watching.
  14. Can't be striking out 9 times in 6 innings against a guy who's not really known for Ks

  17. Zvon wrote: Was it a packed house? I imagine it was. I was watching on TV but I only remember the hoopla. And the issue about who caught the ball out there in the pen. 50K+, although it probably would be interesting to find out how many of them were still in the stadium by the 7th inning.
  18. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: The fact that the hype over it carried over the offseason in time for Topps to make a series of "Hank Aaron Specials" and for ABC to arrange a Monday Night Baseball broadcast and stuff helped to pump it up. Elements of it were very forward-y, as baseball marketing would go, but it seemed genuine. That it carried over--Aaron had ended the previous season with 713--also gave rise to a controversy about whether the Braves should be allowed to rig it so Hank broke the record at home. Atlanta made it clear that they had every intention of having the record broken in Fulton County but the Braves opened the season with 3 games in Cincinnati and the pre-announcement didn't sit well with Bowie Kuhn. After much back and forth, it was decided that Aaron would be in the starting lineup for at least 2 of the 3 games in Cincy. Hank HR'd for record-tying #714 not just on opening day but in his very first AB of the season making even Atlanta's compromise plan look kind of dicey. He then went 0-2 + a walk for the rest of game 1, sat out game 2, and then went 0-3 in game 3 as Braves execs let out a big sigh of relief -- remember that that franchise didn't draw flies in those days. #715 came in Game 4, the Atlanta home opener, in Hank's 2nd AB (4th inning).
  19. He missed one today going to his other side. A tougher play than that one, but still. I think the only phrase used in MFY radiocasts more often that; "... just past a lunging Jeter", is the one where some version of "and this next pitch is sponsored by ..." is employed.
  20. David Robertson to the DL (strained groin ... I assume his own) and some guy I never heard of called up to replace him. Yanx are currently losing (in a VERY empty stadium - seems to me I heard that recently about the 2nd day of seasons) to the O's despite just powering themselves to their 2nd HR of the season (Soiano + Gardner: 1 each) I think by their 8th game of the season time two years ago they had already hit 46 (although I may have to check my math on that). Yanx fans in that season were given to complaining about how the team was too HR dependent and how they preferred a squad that ran and bunted a lot. Well, here's their chance to see how they actually like that kind of team. And, as always, be careful what you wish for ...
  21. Well I don't know how official any of these ratings really are.

Reyes is on the DL again.he played 93 games last year. this contract could still easily turn into the disaster that many predicted, so i dont know why anyone wants to criticize sandy for not signing it. Whether the non-signing was a good move or not was debatable then and probably still is so now. My point is that I don't believe Sandy had choice in the matter and therefore his "decision" to not sign him, coming as it did at the nadir of the problems caused by the Madoff mess, was made in advance for him by the money men.
  23. Nunez winds up getting dealt to the Twinkies for a minor league pitcher. Olbermann reminded us (or at least claims) on last night's show that the Yanx once failed to complete a trade for Cliff Lee (in 2010 while w/Seattle) because of their refusal to include Eduardo Nunez in the deal.
  24. I don't believe Sandy had any power or input in the decision not to pursue Reyes.
