The decision not to sign Kumar Rocker might have been right and the Mets did get a 2d 1st round pick but the downside is that the 2d pick is #14 and if the Mets were to sign a FA who rejected a QO, such as Robbie Ray, they would forfeit pick #14 (the 1st pick is #11). No other team has a 2d pick that high. If the Mets signed Rocker, and I'm not saying that they should have, the 2d pick would be around #35 so losing that pick would be seen as less of a drawback. Here, it's a deterrent to signing a "restricted" FA, such as Ray, Marcus Semien, or Nick Castellanos. From Ken Rosenthal, today in The Athletic: [bLOCKQUOTE][T]hey are unlikely to add a free agent who rejected a qualifying offer from another club because of the unique circumstances following their failure to sign Kumar Rocker, the 10th selection in this year's amateur draft. Such a move would cost the Mets their second-highest pick, as well as $500,000 from their international bonus pool. And with the Mets receiving the 11th choice as compensation for losing Rocker, their second-highest pick will be their first rounder, and a fairly high one at that – the 14th selection. Ten free agents who rejected qualifying offers remain available, including Conforto. Of the others, Semien, left-hander Robbie Ray and outfielder Nick Castellanos would hold greater appeal to the Mets if the acquisition cost did not include the No. 14 pick.
