  1. Tweet from Heyman: SI_JonHeyman #mets planning to bring back feisty '86 hero wally backman in minor-league coaching role. they could use a little spunk. Good!
  2. METS ANNOUNCE 2010 COACHING STAFF CHANGES FLUSHING, N.Y., October 5, 2009 The New York Mets today announced that Bench Coach Sandy Alomar Sr. and First Base Coach Luis Alicea will not be returning for the 2010 season. Alomar Sr. will be offered another position within the organization. Hitting Coach Howard Johnson, Pitching Coach Dan Warthen and Bullpen Coach Randy Niemann will return to Manager Jerry Manuels staff in the same positions next year. Third Base Coach Razor Shines and Catching Instructor Sandy Alomar Jr. will be part of the Major League staff in 2010 in yet to be determined roles.
  3. Nice to win on the last day of the season.
  4. NYPost_Mets Jerry Manuel was in meetings all morning and said he expects an announcement tomorrow on changes and the team's offseason plans.

  7. Thanks Ashie. I enjoyed Gary's questioning of Jerry's explanation for scratching Beltran. Jerry said that it was because this is a day game after a night game. Gary said that this game was always scheduled as a day game after a night game.

I'm pretty sure Monday is an off-day so why today? Perhaps Jerry needs another day to evaluate Tatis. I'm trying to win a fantasy championship so I need every player playing and Jerry gives Wright the day off on the penultimate day of the season. (I am aware that you don't care about my fantasy team.) He can't be fired fast enough for me. Dave Lennon thinks that Jerry wants to make sure that Wright finishes above .300. He's at .308 now. Even if he goes 0-4, he's still at .305. The Padres and Blue Jays have fired their GMs but Omar is still the Mets GM. Beltran scratched.
  9. A FAFIF classic. Outstanding. And TMF is right: the Mets should have sent that to everyone on their mailing list. What would have been the harm? (Blunderbuss is the child that Jerry Buss doesn't talk about.)
  10. Thank you for your support during our inaugural season at Citi Field. Everyone at the Mets - our Ownership, General Manager Omar Minaya, Manager Jerry Manuel, the coaches, players, front office and staff - shares your disappointment with the 2009 season. We are also determined to get the organization and the team to where you - and we - want to be: a championship caliber team in 2010. You soon will hear from Ownership and Omar about how we plan to improve the ball club through a combination of player signings, trades, enhanced player development and continued commitment to one of the highest player payrolls in Major League Baseball. We greatly appreciate your purchase of Mets Season Tickets - in this economy or any other. We are currently finalizing our ticket pricing for 2010. Season Ticket prices will be reduced by an average of more than 10 percent, with several seating areas being adjusted by more than 20 percent. Every Season Ticket Holder invoice for 2010 will be less than 2009. We will be in touch with you in the weeks ahead regarding additional details and benefits. As a reminder, we have scheduled a Season Ticket Holder Appreciation Day this Sunday, October 4 which will include an exclusive post-game Mr. Met Dash for you to run the bases at Citi Field. Thank you again for your business in 2009. We hope to earn your continued support and look forward to seeing you at Citi Field in 2010. New York Mets (Note: I didn't get this sent to me--it was transcribed elsewhere so don't yell if it's not verbatim!)
  11. I agree on Acta. As a manager, he's a fine 3B coach.
  12. http://www.newsday.com/columnists/ken-davidoff/maybe-mets-should-start-by-firing-manuel-1.1490341 I agree.
  13. No SNY for us in the DC area so I didn't hear it... thank you.
  14. Is Anderson Hernandez new to baseball?
  15. Great stuff. Thanks for posting.
  16. Mets (courtesy David Lennon): Pagan -- LF Hernandez -- 2B Wright -- 3B Beltran -- CF Francoeur -- RF Tatis -- 1B Santos -- C Valdez -- SS Redding -- SP Nationals (courtesy Chico Harlan): Harris - 8 Dukes - 9 Zimmerman - 5 Dunn - 3 Willingham - 7 Bard - 2 Desmond - 6 Gonzalez - 4 Lannan - 1 The Mets used deserve capitalization, bolding and underlining. Not any more. I would like to say something positive about a current Met: Valdez can stay. This is a big upset as I once railed against him having a cool number like 4--I think I said he should be wearing 84--but he can field and hit a little. I don't want him as a starter but he can back up Jose next year (that's Jose Reyes, in case you've forgotten). Fantastic! Mariano Rivera on the cover of the new [u:38by7j6b]SI[/u:38by7j6b]! http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/cover/featured/11291/index.htm?eref=sircrc&eref=sisf That means I keep it face down.
  17. Wright's head continues to be anywhere but in the game as he fails with 2 on and then makes an error. Meanwhile, his buddy made a great play on the Pagan sac bunt. 7th inning: another sac bunt. Why does Jerry even have to be there? It's automatic. And of course, the Mets don't score. Jerry gives away outs as if the rest of the lineup is filled with RBI machines.
  18. It's the annual hazing day for Mets rookies. http://twitpic.com/jen4r Why is Wright in that picture? Santos is Robin: http://tweetphoto.com/g640auco left to right, it's Lance Broadway, Bobby Parnell, Tobi Stoner, physical therapist John Zajac, Daniel Murphy, Josh Thole, with Omir Santos in front. 19. I. The Ramblings Its the final road series of 2009 for the Mets as they visit Nationals Park in Washington, DC for a three-game series. We know that the games are meaningless as they wont affect the standings, but we now know that the players , or at least one particular player, feels the same way: David Wright, after Saturdays game: Its been tough because were playing, as far as the standings go, in pretty meaningless gamesThats the tough part.... Its so tough for David that he couldnt run hard for 180 feet on Saturday night. It makes me thrilled that Im spending a minimum of $105 to see the Mets on Tuesday night (tickets + parking, and yes, I bought this game before the season started). At least the Mets wont let us down in the last weekend. They took care of that a long time ago. In case youre wondering, I am not in the Fantasy Camp commercial currently shown on SNY. However, a plastic surgeon from Rochester, NY makes two appearances. Ryan Zimmerman is having a great year for the Nationals. We know that he is a contemporary of David Wrights from the Virginia Beach area. A few seasons ago, my friend Jeff Bond claimed that Zimmerman was better than Wright. I thought that Jeff was an idiot (after all, Jeff once bet that Willy Mo Pena would hit 40 homeruns for the Nationals). However, two years, later, it appears that for at least one year, Jeff was right (no pun intended). Every game that Zimmerman plays is meaningless but that hasnt stopped Zimmerman from hitting .288, with 32 HR and 101 RBI. He is favored to win the Gold Glove this year. It helps that Ryan is in the same lineup as Adam Dunn. While Dunn could win the Lead Glove award (gold vs. leadfunny, eh?), he can hit: .273, 38/103/.403 OBP. He has hit exactly 40 HRs in four straight seasons and is close to making it five. Nah, the Mets couldnt have used that kind of power. Another bonehead move by the Mets incompetent GM. II. The Matchups I wont be at Mondays game, as I will be at the Stillers home to break the fast. Ross Detwiler will face Nelson Figueroa. Detwiler (LHP, 0-6, 5.71, 1.65 WHIP) hasnt faced the Mets this season, as you might have guessed by the fact that he has no wins. He has started twice since his September call-up, going 5 innings against the Phillies (1 ER) and 5.2 innings against the Dodgers (3 ER). The only Met thats ever faced Detwiler is Francouer who is 0 for 2. Figueroa (RHP, 2-7, 4.88, 1.64) hasnt faced the Nationals this season. As noted, I will be at Tuesdays game to see Mike Pelfrey and J.D. Martin. Martin (RHP, 5-4, 5.71, 1.45) made his ML debut against the Mets on July 20, losing 6-2 (4 IP, 5 ER). He beat the Mets on September 18 (5.1 IP, 2 ER). Against Martin, Francouer is 4 for 5 and Pagan is 3 for 6. I dont know about you, but Im sick of Pelfrey (10-12, 5.08, 1.52). I would have shut him down a few weeks ago, after his great start against the Cubs on September 6. These starts havent done anything to help his fragile psyche and have put more innings on his young arm. Pelfrey is 1-2 against the Nationals in 09 (most recently on September 18, 7 IP, 4 ER). Against Pelfrey, Josh Willingham is 7 for 17, 2 HR, 6 RBI and Zimmerman is 10-33, 1 HR, 4 RBI. Wednesdays game starts at 4:35. The locals want more day games but the Nationals are hesitant to do so, thinking that it could jam the fragile transportation system at rush-hour. The half-assed compromise is to have a few games start at 4:35. John Lannan (LHP, 9-13, 3.93, 1.37) faces Tim Redding (3-6, 5.29, 1.47) in this one. We already know way too much about Lannan and Redding. Lannan pitches great against NY teams and Redding is making a decent showing to be in the 5th slot in the rotation next season. Against Lannan, Francouer is 10-19. Willingham is 5-15, 2 HR, 4 RBI versus Redding. III. Thats It If youre looking for dcbatgirl, Im going to have to pass this time. Ive gone to her for the other 2 KTEs and I dont want to waste her knowledge on meaningless games. Blame David Wright.
  20. METS: Pagan, cf Hernandez, 2b Murphy, 1b Francoeur, rf Sullivan, lf Tatis, 3b Thole, c Valdez, ss Misch, lhp =#00BFFF]Stupid Marlins: Coghlan 7 Maybin 8 Ramirez 6 Cantu 3 Uggla 4 Helms 5 Paulino 2 Carroll 9 Volstad rhp
  21. Kevin Burkhart tweets that Josh Johnson has been scratched due to the flu and Chris Volstad gets the start. Beltran and Wright to get the day off. And the Mets will have water stations at each base so the players can hydrate after running for 90 feet before they have to run 90 more.
  22. So there's a signal telling the players not to run hard? Because we wouldn't want them to have to run hard unnecessarily? Why couldn't Jerry come out and say that what Wright did is unacceptable? Instead, he defended an act that Wright apologized for and threw one of his coaches under a bus.
