  1. Tough break for the Marlins: "Manager Ozzie Guillen said he expects Giancarlo Stanton (knee) to be out for at least 4-6 weeks. He will fly back to Miami tomorrow to have surgery." http://www.rotoinfo.com/comments-latestfromTwitter-135727.html
  2. Jackson's statement is almost as bad as when he tried to kill The Queen.
  3. I was a minute behind "live" via the MLB.tv app on my TV so I couldn't comment w/you in real-time, but YESSSSSSS! Too bad SF choked and cost the Mets a chance to pickup a game. If they had a real 3B, maybe they would have won. The other night, Valdespin had a walk-off single in Buffalo and kept running into the OF. I wonder if David was copying that. http://www.milb.com/multimedia/vpp.jsp?sid=t422 The bunt was a bad call. Thole was capable of grounding out to 2B and maybe it would have gone through. And, as noted by Edgy, Nieuwenhuis is a K machine so there was no guarantee that he could hit a sac fly. Bill Webb is really bad at his job. Fortunately, David Wright is really good at his job.
  4. These are major league umpires, right--not teenagers doing this to make $20.
  5. As of now, Duda's offense doesn't make up for his horrid defense. Agreed FK: when Bay is activated, Nieuwenhuis goes--so long as Torres is OK (who else plays CF?).
  6. Dickey on Letterman, July 11: http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2012/07/05/mlb-all-stars-to-present-top-ten-list-on-late-show-with-david-letterman/140566/
  7. Jacksons stance on the issue of undeserving members of the Hall of Fame: I didnt see Kirby Puckett as a Hall of Famer. I didnt see Gary Carter as a Hall of Famer. I didnt see Don Sutton as a Hall of Famer. I didnt see Phil Niekro as a Hall of Famer. As much as I like Jim Rice, Im not so sure hes a Hall of Famer. On whether Bert Blyleven should have been elected into the Hall of Fame: No. No, no, no, no. Blyleven wasnt even the dominant pitcher of his era, it was Jack Morris. On being passed on the alltime home run list by players linked to performance-enhancing drugs: I dont think the fans really count them, and I agree. I believe that Hank Aaron is the home run king, not Barry Bonds, as great a player as Bonds was. On Alex Rodriguez: Als a very good friend. But I think there are real questions about his numbers. As much as I like him, what he admitted about his usage does cloud some of his records. Jacksons view on whether players linked to performance-enhancing drugs should be inducted into the Hall of Fame: If any of those guys get in, no Hall of Famer will attend. On Andy Pettittes possible election to the Hall of Fame: The question is going to be a guy like Andy Pettitte, who admitted that he got involved for a while, but who is so universally respected in the game. I think hell get in, but there will be a lot of [members] who wont go.
  8. If his guy isn't starting at catcher, then he'll take the guy that should be the starting pitcher and pair that guy with his guy to make a point in the 3d inning. LaRussa's a friggin' genius... or he's drunk.
  9. STFU Reggie Jackson: http://insidesportsillustrated.com/2012/07/05/13th-annual-where-are-they-now-issue/ He can have his opinion, which is "none of these guys were as great as me but they still have the same honor", but find someone that didn't just pass away, you egomaniacal jackass.
  10. Well, one step was just taken: Hefner was sent down.
  11. Edgy: I agree with you on your main point--leave the starter in--but what would you have done differently today? Leave Young in to give up more homers? Shorty had to go to the bullpen and every single choice, other than Parnell and Byrdak, was bad.
  12. Sandy--wake the hell up, stop bitching about the All-Start votes, and find at least two pitchers to replace these clowns.
  13. It's Tejada the only Met keeping "the claw" alive?
  14. The way I would do things, this is Young's last start until July 21. Nothing against him, but I want Dickey to pitch twice against the Nationals (remember that the All-Star break is four days long): July 13, @ ATL--Johan July 14, @ ATL--R.A. July 15, @ ATL--Niese July 16, off July 17, @ WSH--Gee July 18, @ WSH--Johan July 19, @ WSH--R.A. July 20, LA--Niese July 21, LA--Young July 22, LA--Gee July 23, WSH--Johan July 24, WSH--R.A. July 25, WSH--Niese.
  15. Nieuwenhuis avoids the DL, Valdespin returns (another MI for the bench), Hampson DFA'd.
  16. The Mets were inspired by the post I wrote on p1 of this thread. Please read it if you missed it.
  17. Wow. Another inning where they ran into two outs (Tejada didn't do anything wrong and Thole looked safe). Imagine how many they would have scored if they let the pitcher get them out.
  18. I'm going to say that the Mets are playing this one for Bill Emswiller of Walpole, Massachusetts. I only knew Bill from Facebook (Mets fan, Letterman fan) but he once went out of his way to meet me when I was visiting Cambridge. He passed away yesterday after a brief illness. I looked at this timeline and his last status update was on Sunday. It read "Lgm". So let's go Mets... win this one for Bill.
  19. I would just like to see a little more fire from Shorty. Even if it wasn't warranted here, it can't hurt to go out when your best player is upset and stick up for him. I think he's so concerned with not living up (down?) to his pre-Mets reputation that it makes him refrain from getting in an umpire's face.
  20. Great thread. You don't like a bench with: .188 back-up catcher; Turner; Q; Murphy/Cedeno; and, Hairston/Nieuwenhuis? While looking for bullpen help, Sandy needs to get a better hitting back-up catcher and remove one of Turner/Q/Cedeno in favor of someone with pop, as you suggest. As admirably as Q has played (and he did catch the final out of the lone win over the MFYs), he would be likely candidate.
  21. Zvon wrote: Wow. Who else can do that and not get tossed? Dave was pissed. Why didn't Shorty come out to defend his All-Star?
  22. I don't know what the Giants did, but I know that the Nationals gave prizes to those that voted numerous times. The Mets rewards were minimal (a discount at the store, a discount on a handful of games). If the game "counts", then bribery shouldn't be encouraged.
  23. Edgy DC wrote: Zvon wrote: Fuckin in between hops. But that's no excuse Turner. I told you people. I TOLD you. Gah! Nobody ever listens. GAH! See my comment on page 1. I heard you.
  24. That's a helluva throw from the catcher who is only there for his defense. Gordon is really fast but if you're going to hit .150, it would be a good idea to throw it to the correct side of the bag.
  25. bmfc1 wrote: Edgy DC wrote: Really dislike this Turner-at-first thing. Agreed. It didn't work so great last Sunday night. Turner needs some ABs but I'd rather have hot-Ike, even against a hot-lefty, to have his defense. There you go. Nice move, Shorty.
