Brodie had two players in mind from STL for Wheeler and the Cardinals wouldn't do it. From The Athletic: [bLOCKQUOTE]But the New York Mets wanted a major league return and the Cardinals didn't think dealing [Harrison] Bader or [Tyler] O'Neill, both under team control for at least another five seasons, was worth about a dozen Wheeler starts plus, if they make it, what he'd give them in the playoffs. Wheeler, like Bumgarner, is a free agent in November if their current teams don't extend their contracts before then. Bader, meanwhile, struggled so badly when he was handed the Cardinals' starting center field job, he was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Monday. Amazingly, Bader still rates above replacement level, per FanGraphs, despite a .195 batting average and .339 slugging percentage, primarily because he has played elite defense and is a premium baserunner. O'Neill, too, has his warts, primarily a 37.1-percent strikeout rate in 275 big league plate appearances. He also has 14 home runs and 10 doubles in those plate appearances, good for a .469 slugging percentage. He plays good defense and is among the Cardinals' fastest two or three players despite being built like his father, a Mr. Olympia contestant.[/bLOCKQUOTE]
