  1. NY Red Bulls I guess is counted....

  3. As a lefty out of the pen his competition for that job isn't overwhelming , if he gets his shit together he could win that job, fucking guy used to have so much talent.
  4. The Second Spitter wrote: Meanwhile, as we speak, Sherman's busily preparing a nice piece entitled "How Omar's gamble failed". The article begins with a fleeting reference to the Madoff scandal: "Back before revelations of Madoff's machinations were known....." The first paragraph then recounts the optimism generated by the 2005 offseason, the acquisition of Pedro and how it "made the Mets relevant again." The article goes on to chronicle how the Yankees were in "dire need" of a center-fielder at the time, and that Beltran was prepared to "don the Pinstripes for less money", but "cooler heads prevailed in the Bronx". There may also be some anecdote about Beltran and Jeter thrown in at this point. Then there is some discussion about Beltran's collision with Cameron that resulted from "bad karma" after the Mets "bullied" Cameron into playing RF. An attempt to draw some irony with Beltran's move to RF this Spring Training is inserted here. Finally, the article wraps-up by saying that Beltran will always be remembered for striking out looking to Adam Wainwright, while concluding "...and thanks to the Wilpons association with Mr Madoff, the Mets won't be able to assume another contract of that magnitude again in the foreseeable future." Can you provide this service on a daily basis?
  5. Pretty cool, some drawings are better than others, Kenishaw Mountain Landis looks a lot better than Rogers Horsby who looks about 12.
  6. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: What do you guys really think Reyes is going to look like by the midpoint of his next contract, if not the buttend? That's the stuff that scares me. Stealing a hundred bases and playing sick shortstop is a young man's game I'm afraid, specially if said youngster's already had multiple injuries. Not good on year five of a seven year deal, I'd not want to give any player that length of deal anymore. Boston are apparently going to give Gonzo seven years $154 million.....no thanks.
  7. G-Fafif wrote: Dr. Burkhardt sounds pessimistic. Is he in consultation with Dr. Flood?
  8. G-Fafif wrote: Does the Captain insist on riding the bus both ways so he can Lead his teammates By Example? You probably missed this because it appeared in the print edition. "Jeter seeing that the bus driver was making one such trio for the fourth day running excused him and jumped in to the drivers seat, it gave his teammates pause , Texeria vowed to be a better person after witnessing this , Cano blessed himself and was heard to whisper thank God for Derek Jeter in Spanish."
  9. sharpie wrote: If your name is highlighted, always in red or green, off you go. While walking to his locker Saturday morning, Jeter, still dressed in his civilian clothes, glanced at the list for Sundays game and did a double take, his eyes widening. Asked if he was surprised, Jeter chuckled and shook his head. The captain never, ever finds out that way. Most annoying paragraph I've read in a while. If I didn't know it was Shpigel that wrote the article I would have guessed Harper from reading that paragraph. Why must all beat writers turn to mush when writing about Jeter?
  10. Fun article , I've talked to a lot of smart people about this. while in the bar getting hammered.

He sat out Saturday 9/11 for it and then played 9/12 and every day going forward. (and then again felt swelling or whatever 3 weeks later, which was also reported to be minor) This probably doesn't change anything about what we expect from Beltran this season. Regular rest. You mean Dr. Patrick Flood?
  12. TransMonk wrote: Edgy DC wrote: My guess is that his hands are tied by an organization trying to get some cashflow. He signs a guy to a multi-million-dollar deal before the sale goes through and it looks like just another crippling (and dangerous) financial obligation on the ledger. This. Also, from where I sit, it makes the most financial sense for management to wait and see a) how the team is doing in July and what Jose's trade value is in July. You still sitting in the capitol building?
  13. Centerfield wrote: Alderson says contract talks during spring training are "unlikely". I repeat, this makes no sense to me. Up until now I've given Sandy the benefit of the doubt, but this just sucks. Doesn't Reyes say the same thing?m no talks now?
  14. metirish wrote: TransMonk wrote: Terry and Sandy are travelling to see Ollie pitch. I thought our GM wanted to see Reyes play. Hey, Sandy! Jose's in St. Lucie. Rubin rather smugly says this is Ollies last time in a Mets uniform. I take that back , he said this Tuesday marks the final start of Oliver Perez's Mets career I guess that can be taken many ways.
  15. Carlos Beltran will refrain from any game action for a second straight day Tuesday to rest left knee tendinitis coupled with his chronic right knee woes. http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets

  17. Izzy consistent at 89/90 Rubin says, that's encouraging.
  18. Is there not any MLB rules that each team needs to abide by to show it can stay solvent?(not sure if that's the proper wording right there). For example several soccer teams in England that went in to bankruptcy got punished with point deductions typically starting the following season , so a team starts - 9 points and can take years to get back in to the top flight, but if they are smart the silly spending that got them there is gone and they build through youth. Of course this wouldn't work here as there is no relegation, instead MLB gives you huge loans.
  19. Edgy DC wrote: I think they were more like $110-115 million. you are correct , haven't see the 70's since 2000 http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2004/12/new-york-mets.html
  20. Edgy DC wrote: OK, let's look at anachronisms. "Where's the beef?" as a catchphrase debuted and peaked in 1984, and it had already jumped the shakr when Walter Mondale used it against Ronald Reagan in 1984. Any college-aged ski-resort partying white dude who'd wear it on a tee-shirt in 1986 would have been one arch ironisst. Candy-colored hairband glam metal lite hadn't yet really asserted itself until 1987. College party dudes would have been rockin' out to U2, Peter Gabriel, and Robert Palmer --- and maybe a little Timbuk 3. If they had a dark side, they were rocking to the Cult, the Cure, and Siouxsie and the Banshiees. Rap had transitioned from DMC's ascendency to the Beastie Boys' Licensed to Ill. If they were stupid party animals, how does that music not make an appearance? Meanwhile --- big error here --- the coming of Kid 'n' Play and the introduction of the oversized stovepipe fade was still two years off. Still enjoyed it more than other eighties flashbacks. I couldn't help but think of this post when I was watching the movie last night.......enjoyed it though , nostalgia for sure.
  21. The Mets IIRC had $70 million payrolls in the Howe years , just saying.
  22. didn't see the pic before , when did she turn white?

Longtime WNBC anchor Sue Simmons, who's no stranger to oddly-timed blurts, mutters, "Well, I guess I'll have to check my DVR to see those two scoreless innings Ollie Perez tossed." Did a little Googling this morning to confirm, and yep, she's apparently one of us. Oh yeah , a big Mets fan, she scolded one of the sports guys last week for saying Shea Stadium.....
