  1. That cap is for the Mesa Solar Sox.

SteveJRogers wrote: ="TransMonk"]Last night on BBTN, the biggest geek not named Buster Onley stated that no team in the history of the game has had a 7 game lead on September 12th and failed to make the playoffs. There is a slight problem with that, its a complete arbitrary date that has no context. In recent years, yeah that has been roughly around the mark when there is 2 weeks left, but since that date falls on a different calendar day every seven years, there isn't a real context you can grab on to. Sometimes is more, sometimes its less, and sometimes the season went through the first week of October (there is no start date for the data so is it since 1969? 1995? The start of baseball? Give me a fact with a more soild base to it, like "No team with a 7 game lead with 2 weeks to play..." or even Labor Day (ALWAYS first weekend of September) but the date is hard to make a stand off of. I think 9/12 is a fairly specific date and not arbitrary at all. If the stat was "No team with a 7 game lead with 2 weeks to play..." as you suggested, wouldn't that prompt just as many questions? Does that mean 14 days or 14 games left? Does the trailing team have off days? It's just a stat that only has meaning if you buy into the crap that ESPN is selling. Kurkjian gets paid to throw this shit out there...you can take it or leave it as you see fit. It doesn't change the fact that blowing a 7 game lead with 17 games left to play would have to be considered a pretty big choke.
  3. I believe 7 innings would be a career high for Mr. Pelfrey.

    Blech.

Bright side?: If the Mets clinch, they are guaranteed to do it at home. A division title celebration at Dolphin's Stadium wouldn't have been as cool anyways.
  5. I don't have a problem with Peterson. The starting staff has been better than I expected it would be this year. I blame Omar more than Rick for the troubles out of the pen.
  6. Last night on BBTN, the biggest geek not named Buster Onley stated that no team in the history of the game has had a 7 game lead on September 12th and failed to make the playoffs. He then went on to say that he thinks the Mets will still make it, and I do too. But if they don't, I'd be fearful if I were Willie. That would qualify as a historic collapse. My bigger fear with Willie is not that the team won't make the playoffs, but that he's lost the faith of the team. I have a sinking feeling that maybe Julio Franco wasn't a lone wolf in his objections to Willie's style, but maybe the most vocal and also the most expendable.
  7. Regardless of 13-K stuff, Ishii's career high for strikeouts in a game was 10, which he got once in 2002 during his first ML game and never reached again. Lawrence's career high was also 10, which he achieved twice in 2002 and once in 2004. Just glancing at the game logs, I would guess that Lawrence has just as many "best days" as Ishii. However, they are both useless to me in 2007.
  8. According to Metsblog.com, Tom Glavine suggested in an interview with WFAN today that the team would likely have a closed-door, players-only meeting before the game tonight. Glavine also stated it would be the first players-only meeting in the 5 years he's been a Met.
  9. I thought the prospectus website was updated daily. You can go to http://www.coolstandings.com/baseball_standings.asp?i=1. Probably not as "smart" as prospectus because it has colors. But it still simulates the rest of the season a million times. They put the Mets at a 94.4% chance of making the playoffs. 86.9% to win the division, 7.6% to win the WC.
  10. Teams are dropping like flies. Houston, Pittsburgh, Minnesota and Oakland were completely eliminated last night. Toronto and Cincy could be wiped out tonight.
  11. So we're looking at 7 different pitchers over the next 7 days.
  12. The Mets collectively have their heads up their asses today.

  14. San Fran joins Texas as teams that will officially be watching the playoffs on TV.

  16. Mother chucker.
  17. Florida and Washington still have "elimination numbers", but they have both been eliminated. The elimination number takes into account only the W-L records and games remaining, but not the games remaining between teams. There is no possible scenario of outcomes left where Florida or Washington will win the WC because all of those NL West teams play each other so many times.
  18. 3 Ks and 3 hits for Pedro in the first. 1-0 Phils.
  19. True dat...although Houston is still alive in the NL Central. Washington, however is dead in both waters.

  21. That was not a party line I was ever a part of. Poise is not one of the first 100 words I would associate with John Maine. Intelligence and maturity, sure. But to me he's looked like a scared little puppy on the mound almost his entire Mets career. I'm not knocking the guy. I don't think Orel was as much as the title of this thread suggests either. He's young and with experience this side of the game should come.
  22. What I got out of it was not necessarily the portrayal of emotion that John Maine was showing, but the lack of confidence in his body lanuguage. When John Smoltz gets into trouble. His demeanor and body lanuguage still suggests, "OK, hitter. This is my best stuff. Hit it if you can. I dare you." John Maine tends to non-verbally express, "OK, hitter. This is my best stuff. You can probably hit it. I hope you don't." It's not about talent. John Maine pitched well last night. But there is that certain vibe that bonafide top-of-the-rotation starters give that I'm not sure John Maine has yet. I would believe that good, experienced hitters can tell when a pitcher doesn't believe in his stuff as much as he should and they may be able to exploit that. Or worse, the pitcher starts playing confidence games in his own head.
  23. Elster88 wrote: ="TransMonk"]Agreed...with Smoltz on the other side, the contrast in demeanor was stark. Who was in line for the win again? At that point, neither one of them because the game was tied.
  24. Agreed...with Smoltz on the other side, the contrast in demeanor was stark. Hershiser was on him for looking blank and lacking both confidence and concentration when he was struggling in the 4th, both on the mound and trying to get the bunt down at the plate. I see what Orel is getting at and it's really, IMO, a back-handed compliment to John Maine's stuff. If he ever gets his confidence behind his arm, he could be a superstar.
