I'll take my shots at Gary Cohen here as well, who was engaging in colorful conversation with the color guys so much that he missed whether pitches were called balls or strikes and mis-gave the count more than a few times today. Play-by-play, Gary, play-by-play. I wanna know what Keith's favorite opening day memory was too, but more importantly I want to know why you're calling the ball low when the ump is pointing to his right. I only mention this because I believe that SNY has one of the premiere booths in the league. With my week long trial of Extra Innings, I'm now flipping between some god-awful booths and only want to see the best from my guys. Atlanta's Peachtree network is as pompous and oblivious as TBS ever was.
  2. Present, but working...I'll have to catch the enccore.
  3. The new Bravo unis look sharp. Hudson picking up where he left off last year, pitching a dominating game and not getting a win. George W. Bush calling the Chipper Jones home run made me throw up in my mouth a little. From what I could see, it looks like DC has a lovely new ballpark.

  5. And I'll submit again that our CF has the pop of a corner outfielder...whereas most CFs do not. I think our outfield as a whole has average pop. 1B and C concern me, but I'm optimistic about our pitching right now. We have a much better chance of winning the games that we only score 2 or 3 runs in than we did last year.
  6. Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and... Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most amps go up to ten? Nigel Tufnel: Exactly. Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder? Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where? Marty DiBergi: I don't know. Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do? Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven. Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One louder. Marty DiBergi: Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder? Nigel Tufnel: [pause] These go to eleven.
  7. The Mets pitching staff leads the majors in ERA, strikeouts and fewest HRs allowed this spring. They are 3rd in fewest walks allowed. Spring stats may not mean much, but I still like these numbers.
  8. I'll take him on in a YouTube/Mets Parody Contest any day.
  9. Frayed Knot wrote: El Duque pitched for one of the sides, facing off against Pelfrey in a 5th starter smackdown. Duque lasted 4 innings/80 pitches and is scheduled to start in a real game next time around. He topped out at 81 MPH...look out!

  13. 7-0 now after the 3rd. John Maine is the man, as well.
  14. I'm half expecting his arm to fall off.
  15. He winks and mimes shooting a gun at people around the workplace that he doesn't know on a first name basis, causing these virtual strangers to utter "Shmuck" under their breath.
  16. Vic Sage wrote: Nobody else is concerned by this? It makes me want to puke. Especially because "we are the team to beat". More disturbing to me than the amount of injuries is management's reluctance to find it concerning (at least to ANY degree publicly...they're probably all drinking heavily and pulling their hair out when the press is gone). At any rate...we have to have a picture of an ostrich around here somewhere.
  17. Alou having hernia surgery, will miss 4-6 weeks. http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080305&content_id=2406441&vkey=spt2008news&fext=.jsp&c_id=nym Hopefully that only means 2 weeks of the regular season...but with Alou it could be 4-6 months.
  18. Dan Murphy starting at 1B for the Mets in Jupiter today as Michel Abreu stayed in PSL with a strained right hip flexor. Injury run down 03/04 courtesy of Adam Rubin: As we await formal word on whats expected to be a broken ankle for Ruben Gotay, heres the rest of a lengthy a.m. injury briefing. Duaner Sanchez expects to pitch Wednesday in Port St. Lucie against the Dodgers. Just taking my time, said Sanchez, who last appeared Friday. Ryan Church plans to swim in a pool at the minor-league complex today, and hopes to be cleared to be on a baseball field in some capacity tomorrow. Im better. Im rested, too, Church said. Ive never been to bed at 6 oclock - 6 p.m. Luis Castillo will run the bases for the first time today to test his surgically cleaned knees. The Mets errantly said he had started doing that last weekend. He hopes to play this weekend. Jose Valentin sounded pessimistic he could be ready for Opening Day as he recovers from an ACL tear. Valentin said he cant afford to rush, since re-injury means the end of his career. This is now or never for me, Valentin said. Stopping right away, thats the problem and going right again. I still feel that soreness and weakness. Valentin hasnt started sliding yet, either. Damion Easley said hes close to returning. Marlon Anderson cant tell when hell be able to return from a bruised sternum. Its hard to swing, Anderson said. Carlos Delgado (hip) is still not ready to bat. Endy Chavez has started running bases and expects to make his first Grapefruit League start this weekend. Im not sure, Chavez said. Thats what I believe. Carlos Beltran is running bases and plans to test his surgically cleaned knees sliding today. Michel Abreu is out with a strained right hip flexor, which occurred Monday.
  19. I remember seeing a picture of Alomar in road greys with a blue cap not too long ago when digging through pics, so I'm guessing 2003ish. I miss that look a lot.
  20. Santana's debut less than desired. Gave up a 3 run dinger to Juan Gonzalez (yeah, that Juan Gonzalez from the 1990s) in the first.
  21. Lineups for 2/27 at Tigers: METS Angel Pagan (CF) Brady Clark (LF) Marlon Anderson (DH) Ryan Church (RF) Ramon Castro © Ruben Gotay (2B) Michel Abreu (1B) Anderson Machado (3B) Anderson Hernandez (SS) Mike Pelfrey (RHP) TIGERS Curtis Granderson (CF) Placido Polanco (2B) Timo Perez (DH) Magglio Ordonez (RF) Miguel Cabrera (3B) Carlos Guillen (1B) Edgar Renteria (SS) Ivan Rodriguez © Jacque Jones (LF) Jeremy Bonderman (RHP) Ouch, Detroit pulling no punches vs. Church being our only regular in there.
  22. Willie arguing a yellow-line home run in a meaningless exhibition game against college kids is a decent sign, IMO.
  23. metsmarathon wrote: well, we also prolly wouldn't have gotten oliver perez... not sure how that fits into the whole prediction scheme. True story. Didn't even think of that.
  24. ="metirish"] Are the Mets depending on him a bit much all things considered? I firmly believe that if Sanchez doesn't have his accident, we win the NLCS and probably the WS in 2006. We also make the playoffs last year. So, yeah, his performance could have made a hell of a lot of difference. However, it remains to be seen how not playing for a year and a half impacts his ability. I'm hoping he can solidify the bullpen, but I don't think we can rely on him saving the bullpen quite yet.
