Offensively, he was better than this season, but he was making the same stupid outfield and baserunning mistakes that he's making this year.

  7. Ceetar wrote: You're overlooking that Pagan's poor start was mainly bad luck and that he's almost got his numbers back up to career norms anyway. He played a fine outfield last year, so it's not like it's beyond him. So really it's about some of the insane defensive moves he's made and how likely he is to at least significantly cut back on them. I'm not overlooking anything. How can you tell the difference between bad luck and poor preparation and execution? I'm looking at the whole of his Mets career as well as the whole of this season. He played well in 2010, not so well in 2009 and this season. If we have to start someone who hits as mundanely as he does, that stater should play exemplary defense. Additionally, any speed that he possesses is wiped out by the incorrect way he runs the bases. His mistake yesterday (breaking for home with less than two outs and nobody behind him on an infield grounder) was inexecuable for someone who makes millions of dollars a year playing a game. I play rec-league softball and I wouldn't make that mistake.
  8. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: It's a LITTLE more than the throws. It's the baserunning, it's the batting approach, it's the routes to the ball... over the better part of this year, he appears to have regressed to what his detractors said about him prior to last year. This. If Pagan is going to bat .260 with limited power, then he needs to have outstanding defensive and baserunning skills, which he doesn't.
  9. Pagan sucks. IMO, CF is a major area of future concern.

  11. The dude weighs three bills. Carrying around that kind of load takes a toll on the body...especially after any sort of leg injury. He plays a passable but not anywhere near a stellar first-base and there is nowhere else to hide him should his limited mobility further decrease (which I feel is inevitable). He is bigger than Mo Vaughn, bigger than Big Papi, bigger than his dad...he's just plain big. He's young enough now that it doesn't matter (in fact, it is most likely the main reason for all of his power). But I'm not sure he'll be able to play D once he crosses into his 30s.
  12. I don't want anything to do with Fielder as a Met. I don't think Milwaukee will commit financially to what it will take to keep him. Ultimately, I see him signing a big deal with an AL team. Any NL team that signs him to a big deal will enjoy it for the first few years and then hate it once the checks get bigger but the playing time diminishes. His first leg injury may very well be his last. Vegetarian my ass.

  18. Thanks for the well wishes, folks. No Elvi will be present and I will tweet when the deed is done. Have a good weekend and Let's Go Mets!
  19. So, the Brewers are coming to town for a three game series against our Metsies. The Brewers have been playing out of their minds (winning 19 of their last 21 as of Thursday) since the All-Star break and now boast the second best record in the NL. They have both hitting and pitching and with the addition of K-Rod at the break, they have a powerful back-end to their bullpen. They have finally taken over a commanding lead in the weak NL Central. When we were choosing KTE assignments back in March, it somehow slipped my mind that I would be HEADING TO LAS VEGAS TO GET MARRIED THIS WEEKEND!!! In honor of my impending nuptials, this will be a very special KTE Milwaukee Brewer WIFEY WATCH edition. Feel free to add to the list if you find a wife that I've missed! It would be nice to take two out of three like we did in Milwaukee, but the Brewers have a pretty good team. Lets go Mets! Ill post some Vegas pics when I get back. I might feel compelled to post live to Facebook or Twitter (irish recently tweeted that I dont tweet enough). Vegas, baby. Vegas!

  21. The National Anthem is a fine tradition that has been around for decades. I've got no problem with that and I'll take stand and take my cap off every time. The Padres wear camo unis every once in a while. I'm not a miltary man, but I've got no beef with that either as an honoring of our troops. Wearing those ugly caps on Memorial Day weekend AND Fourth of July weekend AND September 11th is not a tradition. It has been forced upon every team on specific weekends for the past few years and I find it to be disingenuous. I won't forget that it's Memorial Day if Jon Niese isn't wearing that red, white and blue cap that clashes with his uniform.

But, IMO, forced and uniform "patriotism" is both ugly and fake. Some people (like me) feel patriotism in other, more personal and honest ways than the stale presentation that sporting events and other large gatherings try to give it. I think that's the point i'm trying to make in the other thread. Whoa, whoa, whoa...I'm not making any statement about the other thread (the one with an image of a guy holding a gun to his head) here. I disagree with the MLB mandate of stars and stripes caps on every "patriotic" holiday. Like I said above, I think the FDNY, etc. caps is what being patriotic is all about. It's unique to NY and is targeting a specific group of people to honor. I think that is great.
  23. metsguyinmichigan wrote: I like the Stars and Stripes caps, though I think they should stick with the team's colors. Certainly the red didn't look that good on the Mets. Call me crazy, but I don't mind the giant flags, the singing of "God Bless America" and the other patriotic celebrations. It's one thing when it is truly spontaneous and heartfelt, i.e. the wearing of the PD and FD hats after 9/11. But, IMO, forced and uniform "patriotism" is both ugly and fake.
