  1. The Yankees would've eaten the Ollie Perez and Luis Castillo contracts long ago. Same with the Red Sox. And the Phillies. This assumes that those teams would've been dumb enough to you know what in the first place. Over here in Met land, we're supposed to be hoping and waiting for some kind of alchemy from the Wilpons and Minaya whereby they magically transform these two toxic lumps of untradeable shit into gold, as if there might be a team out there dumb enough to give us Albert Pujols for our fabulously overpaid dregs. The Phillies have two or three ace pitchers and our plan is to allow Jeff Francoeur to accumulate 300 plate appearances by the all star break and for the useless Ollie Perez to take up one of the 25 man roster spots.
  2. And you don't know if Pelfrey wouldn't have given up the same home run, either. And if you say that the home run that Pelfrey supposedly would've given up would've been no worse than the one that Valdes did give up, well that would be hindsight. I haven't checked, but I suspect that Pelfrey, during his current streak of six straight bad starts, is pitching at a level that is statistically worse than any of six consecutive Ollie Perez starts.
  3. Keith and "The Count" that's not from Montefusco. Keith is developing the acting chops that he'd put to good use in the next decade on Seinfeld.
  4. Yeah. Let's all blame Jerry for the Mets giving up 9 runs to the D-Backs. It's so obvious that Pelf shoulda stayed in the game , being how goddamn dominant he was tonight and over the last four or five weeks, too. Me, I also blame Jerry for that Field Level plexiglass pane shattering. Let's not criticize Reyes, either. Reyes made a good error. That was a good error.
  5. So which Met pitcher is having the better July: The one that's 3-0 or the one that's 0-3?
  6. Updated to include games of 7/27/10:
  7. I used FanGraphs WAR and the following search parameters: http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=sta&lg=nl&qual=70&type=6&season=2010&month=0
  8. Dickey at 0-3. Wow. Dickey's probably one of the NL's ten best pitchers this season. Because there are 16 teams in the NL, I suppose one could refer to Dickey as an ace pitcher: At least six NL teams don't have a starting pitcher pitching as good as Dickey is. IP/WAR measures the number of innings a pitcher pitches to generate one win above replacement for his team. Here are the top dozen 2010 NL starters in IP/WAR: 1. Johnson/FLA ------------- 26.9 2. Halladay/PHI---------------33.8 3. Gallardo/MILW------------38.0 4. Jimenez/COL--------------38.38 5. Lincecum/SF---------------38.43 6. Wainwright/STL-----------39.0 (Stats don't include tonight's loss against NYM) 7. Gorzellany/CHI------------40.2 8. Wells/CHI-------------------41.1 9. Francis/COL----------------41.7 10. Kershaw/LA---------------42.2 11. Dickey/NYM---------------44.6 12. Paulino/HOU--------------45.26 . . . 18. Santana/NYM--------------50.7
  9. Edgy DC wrote: Perhaps, but I also think he wasn't quite ready to be in the lineup at all when he he was batting third. The thing I like most about the pitcher-eighth thing, is that the reason to bat him ninth instead --- the 11.1% chance of him getting an extra at-bat when batting eighth --- is deleted by the latter day trend to go to the bullpen (and pinch-hitters) early. I like your post. Plus, it's kinda like tricking Reyes into being the #2 hitter without him catching on. OE I say "kinda" because the #1 slot in a batting order will lead off an inning about twice as often as every other slot.

  11. Updated stats. This month, Dickey's 0-3 with a 1.89 ERA.

  13. Vic Sage wrote: interesting to note that one of the worst possible lineup combos has Reyes / Castillo / Pagan as 1-2-3, and that's the top of the lineup that Jerry is now sending out regularly. Does the program account for whether a lefty or righty is pitching? Because Pagan is no great shakes batting right-handed. And at the risk of beating a dead horse to some more death, Castillo immediately following Reyes is terribly inefficient.
  14. batmagadanleadoff wrote: I realize that the top candidates will all get one more start this month, but if July ended yesterday, I'd vote for Johan. He essentially matched Wainwright and Johnson and then gave up two earned runs over an additional nine or 10 innings. So while Johan is ever so slightly behind Wainwright and Johnson in ERA and WHIP, he's maintained his pace for about 30% more innings.
  15. "The Night Chicago Died" is literally my second favorite song of all time. I'll give you this much: American Pie is a better song than The Night Chicago Died.
  16. Report: Royals not looking to make deal with Mets ESPN's Jayson Stark reports the Royals have "no interest" in making a multiplayer trade with the Mets. Stark quotes an unnamed source who shot down reports the teams were contemplating a swap of bad contracts before Saturday's nonwaiver deadline. Players such as Jeff Francoeur, Oliver Perez, Luis Castillo, Gil Meche, Jose Guillen and Kyle Farnsworth were mentioned in the reports. Kansas City, though, has expressed interest in acquiring Francoeur, who was drafted by the Braves when current Royals general manager Dayton Moore was in charge of Atlanta's farm system. http://www.sportingnews.com/mlb/article/2010-07-26/report-royals-not-looking-make-deal-mets
  17. Ya Gotta Reprieve (or You Got A Reprieve) Sources: Mets won't fire any coaches NEW YORK -- The New York Mets' coaching staff will remain intact when the team opens a homestand Tuesday evening against the St. Louis Cardinals. The decision to leave the staff untouched came during organizational discussions via conference call on Monday, two sources told ESPNNewYork.com. http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/news/story?id=5411825

Ike Davis hit two homers in that game off of that Jints pitcher that never gave up a HR to a lefty all season. Ike also made one of his highligt reel catches in that game. It's still cheesy if you ask me. What I want to know is if there will be any other Classics this year. Next week, SNY is scheduled to air the 1963 game when Jim Hickman's walk off grand slam HR ended Roger Craig's 18(?) game losing streak. Either that or maybe we'll get that game from 1999 when Matt Franco's pinch hit beat the Yankees. Did you ever see the Franco game? Classic stuff ... in the "The Night Chicago Died" sense that anything's a classic if you play it enough. Interesting, but I did mean Classics made, not aired. Why wouldn't it be aired? All 2010 games are televised.
