  1. One Met to go. Here's a hint. This Met was mentioned on this forum in at least one other thread, very recently.

  9. Orosco (last game 9/27/03) was the last member of the '86 Mets to retire from baseball. Jesse outlasted the next to last remaining '86 Met by two full seasons.
  10. This quiz has nine answers. One guess per post. Name the four members of the '86 Mets who played the last game of their respective MLB careers in 1986. Name the five members of the '86 Mets who played MLB in the 21st century.

Because they didn't do anything, Johnson was able to get away, but because they didn't do anything Bove wasn't able to talk to other teams? umm... Bove implies that the Mets kept him in limbo -- as a lame duck scout. The team knew for some time that it had no intention of renewing Bove's contract, yet prevented him from negotiating with other teams. That Sandy Johnson was able to find a new employer does not mean that Bove missed out on opportunities. One scout's personal situation is unique to that scout.
  13. But he needed the Mets permission to talk to other clubs.
  14. Junk in the trunk and junk on my desk. This paperweight's been on my desk for years. And years. I never use it. In fact, it always ends up underneath all of my other junk, counter-purpose. It looks like a stadium giveaway, but I don't specifically recall how or where I acquired it. Dave Kingman and new Mets George Bamberger and George Foster.
  15. How many games will K-Rod finish next season? He needs to finish 55 games for his 2012 $17.5M contract to vest. The Mets have a vested interest in preventing this, not only because it makes financial sense to them, but also to increase their chances of trading him. What team in their right mind would trade for K-Rod if he's on pace for 55 finishes? I say 49 games.

Dickey 3. Pelfrey 4. Niese 5. Takahashi So what'll happen if this award winner is not the same as the Schaefer Met Pitcher of the Year?
  17. I used to conflate Torrealba and Rod Barajas. But not anymore.
  18. I was confused. When you wrote that they didn't belong on the list, I thought it was because you realized that they lost the '85 WS. But now I get it. OK. The Babe: Yankee or MFY?
  19. Edgy DC wrote: The 1985 Cards were deceptively good hitters and shouldn't be included there. The league skewed toward average that year, and they rank high among an unimpressive lot in OPS+. And even that's deceptive, as OPS weights OBP and SLG evenly, and OPB is in fact more important. I don't think they were deceptively good. They were good. They had a few hitters putting in career seasons, simultaneously -- common among pennant winning teams. (See, e.g., Mets, 1969) Also, I don't follow why you'd dock those Cards for not "skewing towards average" as much as the other teams. Shouldn't they be credited for that. Isn't that like saying so and so led the league in HR's, but only because he hit more HR's than any other player?

  21. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: batmagadanleadoff wrote: He could've qualified for the AS game on his hitting alone, even though, on top of that, his fielding was Ruthian. That's a great description right there. Thanks. I know how much everybody here loves a positive Yankee analogy. BTW, is the Bambino a Yankee, or an MFY? This could be its own thread.

  23. Edgy DC wrote: History is full of teams with splendid pitching and modestly capable make-do batting lineups who win the big tomato: the aforementioned 2005 White Sox;the 1985 Cardinals;the 1988 Dodgers;the 1962 Dodgers;the... um... 1924 Senators. I'm not sure why I should hold the San Franciscos in particular contempt. I don't hold the Giants in contempt. I also think that the '85 Cards were a fine hitting team and a formidable foe of Davey's Mets -- Despite their lack of power (that was the year of Jack Clark and seven leadoff hitters, no?) the '85 Cards were one of the NL's better hitting teams. McGee and Clark turned in MVP caliber hitting seasons; Ozzie Smith and Tommie Herr hit like all-stars and were among the very best hitters at their respective positions. Ozzie might've been the best hitting NL shortstop in '85. He could've qualified for the AS game on his hitting alone, even though, on top of that, his fielding was Ruthian.

With eight teams making the playoffs, and the MLB playoffs being a pot-luck tournament and consequently, a terrible gauge to determine the best team, there'll be other less than stellar WS champs to follow, and soon.
