  1. Not surprising Craig Counsell is likely available and we'll known to Stearns The thing about Counsell is that he's a Wisconsin guy and is supposedly very attached to the area. This all sounds like Stearns wants his own man and it was left to Eppler to do the dirty work. Hence this obviously contrived "voluntary (yeah, right) resignation".

I'd go Kranepool or Kingman. Ron Swoboda is probably in the mix as well. Rusty Staub, too. I'll also add Frank Thomas, just because these things tend to involve players who played for the day's opposing team. Thomas is interesting. He woulda had to have really bombed Philly, disproportionately so, to hit 10 against them, or any Met opponent. He was a two and a half year Met.

  6. Or, you know, the Mets could forego the rental for prospects part of the show and hope that Soto opts for free agency, where the Mets could sign him and give up just money to get him, which Cohen has way more of than top-tier prospects. What's wrong with signing someone on an inner circle Hall of Fame trajectory who's just 25 years old?
  7. Bob Alpacadaca wrote: These are statistical arguments. Retiring a number is for recognition for things that go beyond statistics. Casey Stengel has the lowest winning percentage -- by far -- of any Mets manager. But his number is retired, and deservedly so. Apples and oranges. Stengel's number wasn't retired for his on-the-field accomplishments. Just like Willie Mays's Mets #, some 60 years later. No. Not "just like Willie Mays". Mays's number was retired, in large overwhelming part, for accomplishments, symbolic and real, that have absolutely nothing to do with the Mets history. Carter's case should have been made on the field. But I'll indulge: What's Carter's case? What's Carter's case that three dozen other Mets don't have.

And did Tommie Agee's value go beyond statistics?

  11. =Cowtipper post_id=138307 time=1695836102 user_id=166] Seth Lugo, who was a quality pitcher for the Mets for seven seasons, is 8-7 with a 3.57 ERA in 26 starts for the Padres. He was a strikeout ace while with the Mets, but has averaged less than a K per frame for San Diego since shifting to the rotation.

  14. I guess Brian Ostrosser. Put me down for Ostrosser. Is Ostrosser the right answer? Is Ostrosser when Wright's BA dipped below .300? Did I say Ostrosser? Ostrosser! Tomorrow, I'll quiz youse on the identity of the 12th player on the Mets center field depth chart. These are great quizzes. Here's another one: What's Carlos Beltran's lifetime Mets batting average to the tenth decimal?
  15. =nymr83 post_id=136961 time=1694125250 user_id=54] I don't feel that Carter's number needs retirement, but you seem to have a real thing against him, what's up with that?
  16. Edgy MD wrote: That would be a pretty obscure record. Beyond that, two of [Alvarez's] homeruns are as a designated hitter. Would they disqualify the DH home runs? I dunno. Would they count all of Edgar Martinez's career HR's as being hit as a catcher? How about as a pitcher?
  17. =ashie62 post_id=138095 time=1695500206 user_id=90] In this era yould would be tracking DH home runs for so many players that it would be hard to disqualify players for having a few dings at DH

Also a coincidence that Dan Norman happens to be one of our interlopers. Norman never played for the Reds and debuted at the ML level as a Met. Same for Steve Henderson, who's not in the card thread, but if he was, he'd also be an interloper. Our other interloper is/was Bob Aspromonte, whose MLB career ended with his last game as a Met in 1971. Aspro was invited to the Reds 1972 Spring Training, but didn't make the final cuts. He did make Topps final cuts for its 1972 set, as shown below. Thank youse for not playing.
