  1. =Centerfield post_id=143495 time=1703271492 user_id=65] I hope you're right. But I don't see it. I think it's a football saying? You are what your record says you are. And the Mets were a 75 win team last year and have even less pitching going into 2024. They were 20th in runs scored, and 18th in team ERA. That's a lot of ground to make up.
  2. TOURNAMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  3. Why a poll? Can't you make this into a tournament, instead? Maybe with a hot-dog eating contest on the side.
  4. Six teams in each league make the playoffs. One of those teams will be, at best, the 12th best team in the majors. Maybe even the 13th or 14th best team in the bigs. The Mets should contend, even without Yamamoto. Steve Cohen's teams should contend every year, given his willingness to spend. This is the crapfest that baseball has become. The 13th or 14th best team gets a chance to win the WS.
  5. Let's play Yacabonis Roulette all over again. For like the 10th year in a row. We'll get one or two dozen established mediocrity pitchers and cross our fingers hoping that one of them develops into the next Bob Myrick.
  6. So with Houser in the house, is Tylor Megill now fifth, sixth or eighth on the starting pitching depth chart? So riveting.
  7. Can't wait to read 25 more posts about Adrian Houser. I check in every hour or two. How exciting.
  8. Let's have an in-season tournament to see who sings the national anthem the best. The team that hosts the winner gets to wear commemorative tournament patches.
  9. Oh, great. We should have to endure national anthems at every fucking game because some people sing it nicely. By that logic, let's have In-a-Gadda-da-Vida and Free Bird sung before every baseball game, too. Save it for Rosalynn Carter's funeral.

Frayed Knot wrote: Even considering the Dodgers and their eye-popping top of the lineup* .... * now batting in the top of the 1st: Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman If Willie Randolph ever got to manage that team, he'd stick Miguel Cairo in the #2 hole and have him sac bunt whenever Betts led off the first by getting on base. Then he'd puff his chest out as if he just did the smartest thing ever.
  11. Another national-anthem flub has us asking: Why do we play them before sporting events? https://theathletic.com/5133125/2023/12/15/national-anthems-sporting-events-hockey-o-canada/https://theathletic.com/5133125/2023/12/15/national-anthems-sporting-events-hockey-o-canada/ Didn't read the article and have no idea what the hell happened during the incident that underlies this story. But I can relate to the headline like a zillion percent. Mandatory singings of the National Anthem at every fucking sporting event? It's even dumber than in-season Tournaments (Tournaments!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) What a stupid fucking waste of my time. And I have to stand up, too. Just so the rube redneck hayseeds can brag about how much more patriotic they are than everybody else even though they probably couldn't tell you what a single constitutional amendment is or means.
  12. Dom Amore: Pitcher Ken MacKenzie came out a winner with baseball's most loveable losers, the 1962 New York Mets Excerpt: " ... baseball never had anything quite so joyful as the birth of the New York Mets, now celebrating their 60th anniversary. No team has ever lost more games. The 1962 Mets finished 40-120, so deep in the cellar they might've been closer to the other side of the planet, yet they drew 922,530 to the wrecking-ball ready Polo Grounds. There have been more books, documentaries, anecdotes and one-liners written about the '62 Mets — who healed the wounds left by the removal of the Dodgers and Giants to California five years earlier — than most championship teams. MacKenzie, 87, a native of Gore Bay, Ontario, who graduated from Yale in 1956, was in the middle of all the good, the bad and, mostly, the laughable. A lefty who wore glasses, he was the only pitcher to post a winning record that season, 5-4 with a 4.95 ERA. MacKenzie once told Stengel that, at $10,000 per year, he was the lowest paid member of Yale's Class of '56. “But you had the highest ERA,” Stengel fired back with flawless timing. MacKenzie was an original Met, the only pitcher to post a winning record on one of the worst teams in baseball history. https://www.courant.com/2022/02/15/dom-amore-pitcher-ken-mackenzie-came-out-a-winner-with-baseballs-most-loveable-losers-the-1962-new-york-mets/https://www.courant.com/2022/02/15/dom-amore-pitcher-ken-mackenzie-came-out-a-winner-with-baseballs-most-loveable-losers-the-1962-new-york-mets/
  13. I wasn't planning on attending the Mets home opener, but now that that game's been designated as a tournament game (Tournament!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), I think I'll go. I'll be extra interested in rooting for the Mets because the game is a tournament!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! game. I bet that Alonso hits three homers. He practically has to now that the game's a tournament. Tournament!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  14. Check out the Mets 2024 schedule! The Mets open at home against the Brewers on Thursday, March 28. The Mets home opener is the "March 28, 2024 Tournament". The winner of that tournament will have one win added to their Win column. After an off-day Friday, the Mets will resume play on Saturday, March 30, hosting the Brewers again. That game is also designated as a tournament game (Tournament!!!!!!!!!!!!!). Special treat: Taylor Swift to sing the National Anthem. Come early. It's another tournament! But a different Tournament! than the Home Opener Tournament!
  15. A Boy Named Seo wrote: Stearns got demoted to GM already? Sad. Yeah. He lost a tournament to decide his title.
  16. You know, this pursuit of Yamamoto by several teams is kind of like a tournament. It's the tournament to sign Yamamoto.
  17. Was that a tournament game? I'll bet that it wasn't because if it was a tournament game, Delgado wouldn't have asked out.
  18. Next year, new Mets GM David Stearns will have his Mets players pretend that every regular season game is a "tournament game" (Tournament !!). This way, said Stearns, "they'll play harder, thus increasing their chances of winning games and qualifying for the post-season. I can't wait for this tournament mindset to bring out their magic clutchiness powers. They can play better whenever they feel like it. And they'll feel like playing better if they thought they were playing tournament games."
  19. I think that MLB should have a World Series tournament (tournament!!!!!) every month. It's not fair that only one team per season gets to win the World Series. It's not fair to the other 29 teams. So let's have an April World Series tournament. (Tournament!!!). And then a May World Series! etc., etc., etc.
  20. MLB is retroactively declaring last season's September 27th doubleheader between the Mets and Marlins to have been a tournament. A tournament!! The tournament between two teams whose nicknames begin with the letter "M". And because the two teams split the doubleheader, each team winning one game --- everybody wins! Participation trophies for everybody! Commemorative jerseys coming soon. Fans in attendance will be biiled an extra 40% over the face value of their tickets. Because it was a tournament. A tournament!!!
  21. =nymr83 post_id=142808 time=1702426819 user_id=54] The Dodgers are making a few bets here, including that the continued growth of revenues will make this less painful down the road. Think about what the largest contract ever was 20 years ago and then put it on today's payroll - doesn't look quite as big anymore does it? Yes inflation over time is real - but the growth of MLB revenues have likely far outpaced it.
  22. Tremendous Johnson peak. For the Dead Ball era.
  23. Fucking brilliant!
  24. The Yankees have way more prestige, are set up better, and just got Juan Soto. Also, the Yanks have sent a scout to observe every single one of Yamamoto's starts last season. The Mets have Cohen's money.
  25. =metirish post_id=142679 time=1702315415 user_id=72] I'm actually really worried that we won't get Yamamoto, and he'll end up with the MFY
