  3. Ohtani's new salary, accounting for inflation and adjusted for present value, comes out to about $25M a year (AAV). Granted, it's for 10 years. Dodger fans should enjoy watching this unicorn play every day before them. But as for the Dodgers' WS chances, baseball post-season is a stupid shit-show. My favorite part is when, inevitably, the top seeds lose after just one round and then all the ninnies have conniptions about "How could that happen? It's the playoffs! The playoffs!!!" They want the six seeds to participate in the playoffs, but then have heart attacks when the six-seeds actually win a series. "How could this happen?" Last night on the Baseball network, during its all-night Ohtani-thon coverage, hall of fame broadcaster Bob Costas was asked if he'd take the Dodgers or the rest of the field in next year's post-season (the question obviously assumes the Dodges will qualify). Costas said that he'd take the rest of the field. He said he'd take the rest of the field against any team. Even against a team that was a combination of the 1927 Yankees, the Gas House Gang, the Mariners squad that won 116 regular season games and several other all-time great teams for the ages. He said that the post-season is too much of a gauntlet for any team to have an edge. I agree. But it seems as if baseball is headed for a post-season, some day, where every single team qualifies.

Have the details on the timing of the deferred payments been released? I don't think so. But MLB knows the details. So this from The Athletic: "Under the league's calculations, the deferrals lower [Ohtani's] average annual value from $30.4 million to $25.5 million."
  5. https://twitter.com/WillSammon/status/1733640177686401252 Oh well That's probably because Ohtani never wanted to play for the Mets to begin with. Probably a combination of Ohtani wanting to stay on the west coast and perceiving the Mets as way less competitive than the Dodgers.

  8. 2. It's a long way from Omaha to coaching with my goombah. The year I was there was special for me 'cause now I'll always be let in somewhere for free Who am I? --originally posted by "whoisonit" Hint: A different Met by the same name played very briefly for the club later in the decade Hint: In the Hall of Fame There's only one Met enshrined in Cooperstown who has a Met doppelganger in name only -- Pedro Martinez. But the two Pedro Martinez Mets did not play for the Mets in the same decade. Or century.
  9. 5 Joe Foy, then, if not Otis? OE: Duh. I read the clues so fast, saw "famous for Amos" and guessed Otis. If I read it closer, I woulda noticed that he played in 1970, so it couldn't have been Amos.

  13. Here's one. [FIMG=555]https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/91j2978KxhL._AC_SL1500_.jpg[/FIMG] Alou tried to prank the Topps photographer by batting lefty. Topps caught the prank and reversed the image so that Alou would appear batting the right way - righty. The giveaway is the "NY" on the cap and also, the Mets jersey wordmark which is slanting upwards.
  14. Not much to talk about here. It's being reported that the Mets are one of three teams that have dropped out of the pursuit of Ohtani. https://www.si.com/mlb/2023/12/01/shohei-ohtani-sweepstakes-mlb-teams-out-red-sox-metshttps://www.si.com/mlb/2023/12/01/shohei-ohtani-sweepstakes-mlb-teams-out-red-sox-mets

Or (and this is what I'm thinking) is it that Koufax's ten years were a lot better than Wright's ten years? Good one! But Koufax had that four year peak ('63-'66) which was kinda like Gooden in '84 and '85 only for twice as long. What was it that Koufax famously said about Gooden after the '85 season: "I'd rather have his future instead of my past."
  16. Bob Alpacadaca wrote: He makes an interesting point. In a perfect world, a player being a hall of famer or not could be determined in one year. But for better or worse, that's just not how it works with the Baseball Hall and many players build steadily until they get in.... This is true, but for borderline cases. Wright is not even that. He's just not a HOFer. And he's not borderline close. Unless Stark wants to start a HOF for a player's first 10 seasons, only. Gray ink test - Wright -88; Average HOFer - 144 HOF monitor -Wright - 74; Average HOFer - 100 HOF standards - Wright 36; Average HOFer - 50 career bWAR - Wright - 49.2; Average HOF 3b - 68.4 JAWS Wright - 44.3; Average HOF 3b - 55.8
  17. Yeah, Puckett was a big mistake. Also, there's a not too short list of players who looked liked, after their first 10 seasons, would one day be locks for the HOF, including one-time Met Johan Santana. Dale Murphy, famously so. I could go on.
  18. It seems to me, that Stark is saying that Wright should not be a one and doner because of how good Wright's first 10 seasons were. Which they were. So what? He's clearly not a HOFer and if not, who cares when he's voted off the ballot? Either he's a HOFer or he isn't. What is this shit with his first 10 years? Write a column about how Wright was on a can't miss HOF trajectory after 10 years but then injuries happened, derailing his HOF chances. Not that he should get ballot votes. Either he's a HOFer or he isn't. And he isn't. Would he deserve to be enshrined if he retired after 10 seasons. No. I find this piece to be annoying. What? Your first year on the ballot, you get votes based only on your first 10 seasons?
  19. https://www.faithandfearinflushing.com/2023/11/25/ron-hodges-backed-us-up/Remembrance of a backup catcher. I was there. At that Memorial day twofer. Hodges's HR was a blast to right-center field, but a tad closer to center than to right. Went to the next day's game also, when Joe Torre's two solo HR's weren't enough as the Bucs edged the Mets, 3-2. The next day's Daily News back page headline read: Pirates 3, Torre 2. Was also there for that song pardody contest, hosted by yours truly, the last song parody ever held here, pretty much right after the Covid lockdowns went into effect. If I recall, there was more than one song parody referencing the Ball off the Wall play/game. Maybe even three.
  20. [FIMG=333]https://i.imgur.com/9zq0at9.png[/FIMG] That's Alfonzo, which is too easy so maybe this is a trick question. But it still looks like Fonzie.
  21. With Jeff McKnight being answered correctly, here's an updated list of questions. 1. I was originally drafted by the A's But for them I would never play Once I threw nine wild pitches in 76 frames But the next year I threw none in 27 games My career as a Met was not that great The games I played for them totaled eight As a batter I had 10 career hits And my Mets ERA was 7.36. Hint: Debuted with the Mets in 1973. Hint: Died in 2019. Hint: He wore both Nolan Ryan's number at one point...and also Gary Gentry's. Hint: His only other big league club was the Expos. Hint: Pitched from 1970 to 1974. Hint: https://i.imgur.com/wUF2G1h.jpg> Hint: Player initials are J. S. Hint: His first name was John Who am I? 2. This one will "bug" you until you get it...what Met had a lifetime average of 1.000 on 2-for-2, not just 1-for-1? Hint: Pitched fort the Mets in 2003. Hint: Made 2 appearances, both starts; went 0-2. Hint: Mets 20th round pick in 1997. --Originally posted by "VIBaseball" 3. With my original team I finished my career, and when I was with the Mets it was all too clear three wins were a charm but 7 losses caused harm. Who am I ? Hint: Began and finished his career with Pittsburgh. --Originally posted by "whoisonit" 4. Who am I? https://i.imgur.com/mWyzSDH.png> Hint: Was an answer to a previous question in this thread. 5. I guess that is why the so many of the Mets top prospects are the ones the team traded for before the trade deadline this season. Edgy MD wrote: Has it been dismal? I'm not sure I know. I guess it's largely dependent on how we define "of late." I think he's defining "of late" as consisting of a team's last 328 draft picks and "draft record" as the percentage of a team's draft picks that made it to the majors. Of late. And "dismal" means dismal.
  24. Best pitcher of his generation not to win a Cy Young award. Marichal's best seasons coincided with Koufax 's best seasons. Google up Marichal's Time mag and SI covers to get a good look at that famous leg kick.
  25. That July 4, 1967 game was the first time the Mets ever beat Marichal. He was 19-0 vs. the Mets till then.
