  1. Still wild and crazy. If the playoffs started today, the Mets would be traveling to Atlanta for that one-game Wild Card qualifier. (Randall Delgado v Dillon Gee).
  2. I think it is Turner. I think I recall once hearing that Turner was boning up on his catching skills in case of an emergency that would require three catchers in one game.
  3. Between Tejada hitting like Angel Berroa's back-up and the Mets losing three out of four, all ugly, I can't wait for Torres to get back. Vamonos! There's a pennant to be won.
  4. The Overhyped One.
  5. I wonder if the younger Mets fan know just how magical Steve Hendu's rookie season was? It seems to me that over the years, Hendu's Met legacy has been condensed to his walkoff against SanFran and being one of the rejects gotten in the Seaver trade.

He'll garner a greater percentage of the vote than Tom Terrific did, even though Jeter's not worthy of carrying Tom's jockstrap. I've somehow used part of my life to fret over the same possibility but decided it's probably not going to happen as by then there'll be enough contrarian stat types voting who will find enough lacking in his candidacy. It was hard enough getting 98.84% to agree on something so motherlovingly obvious as Tom more than twenty years ago. Bigger pool of voters whenever TOHO is on the ballot, so we're likely safe (unless he benefits from "at last -- someone unsullied by steroid or scandal, let's get self-righteous!"). On the plus side, at least he won't be playing anymore. Can you imagine the witch hunt that'll develop over that National Crisis when Bob Klapisch uses every ounce of his clout to flush out those who dared to omit TOHO from the ballot?

  8. Honoring a great opponent at the end of his career is a time-honored baseball tradition. The Mets honored Musial, Brock and Stargell, and perhaps others that I can't recall right now. Willie Mays was also honored by the Mets at the Polo Grounds, although that tribute had more to do with the local hero -still in his prime- coming back home. Chipper Jones played it fair and square. It's not like he beat up Bud Harrelson or body slammed Felix Millan onto the grass, head first.
  9. I'm pretty sure (but not totally sure) that airlines never schedule departures or arrivals for 12:00: they're either 11:59 or 12:01.

This time, the Mets dropped the ball on ol' Marvelous. Looks like I dropped the ball. Marv lives! He's on the game #80 ticket. KMac is on the game #13 ticket (4/26 v Miami). And Case and Gil appear once each. This blogger's got a list of the tickets, (scroll about halfway down the page) along with some snarky, and often odd comments. I think that the most glaring Mets omission on their 50th ann. ticket faces, among inactive or retired players, is the almost always unloved Armando Benitez. I wonder if Armando's exclusion is a sign that McDowell's gonna be selected as the Mets all-time RH reliever on the Mets 50th ann. all-time team? If I had a vote, I'da wanted Delgado, and the Hendus - Steve and Rickey on a ticket face. Eddie Murray, Bernard Gilkey, Endy and Skip Lockwood too, among others. I wouldn'ta put Teufel or Zeile or Hampton or Shamsky or Wendell or Glavine or Lance Johnson over the last guys on my list.
  12. Topps also printed the Reds 2010 tickets.

  14. Chad Ochoseis wrote: I'm good with not including Reyes, Beltran, or any other currently active ex-Met. Do we really want to honor players who are playing against us this year? Glavine got a ticket, also. This isn't true. This is just batmags taking the piss. Right? RIGHT??? I do take a lot of pisses that go uncredited. Or unnoticed. But there's Glavine's mug on the game #44 ticket. If the Mets were cool kats, they might've farmed out the ticket production to Topps.

  17. In celebration of the Mets 50th anniversary, this year's ticket faces feature a player/executive/announcer from the team's historic past. Each game ticket features a different Met person for the most part; Gil Hodges and Casey Stengel are repeated. Tom Seaver appeared on the game #1 ticket face. Gary Carter appears on the game #8 ticket face. Some other Mets appearing on this year's tickets that weren't, as far as I'm concerned, automatic or obvious choices choices, are Todd Zeile, Turk Wendell, Benny Agbayani, and Billy Wagner. Jose Reyes, last year's batting champ, was excluded.
  18. I'd Wally Pipp him. He's half a scrub and I didn't give a flying fuck when he limped off the field and onto the DL on opening day. I forgot he even exists with Tejada playing like an all-star and the Mets on pace to win 112 games. That this guy's even in the discussion for leadoff hitter is all depressing as hell. Let the current starters play themselves out of the lineup.

  20. Every Mets starter is among the top 30 ranked by ERA (NL). Can't say that about any other NL staff. The Mets are exceeding expectations. We knew they'd have the pitching. The only question was whether they'd hit enough for the pitching to hold up.
  21. G-Fafif wrote: In 1992, the Phillies and Cardinals opted for updated versions of what they had pre-1970. I remember the phrase "classic" being showered down on them in praise, as if classic equaled idyllic 1950s or before Astroturf kicked in altogether. Thus is a Padres uniform that is in that style "classic" or is Padres classic the brown and yellow look that declared "Padres"? Eye of the beholder and all that. You ask the right questions. And probably supply the right answers, too. I wrote in another thread here that the Mets are pinstripes and that the (snow) whites are bullshit, in order to diss the whole black/drop shadow look. I loathed that black look to no end. But I knew all along that I was merely making an emotional argument. Because the Mets might not be pinstripes. Or the Mets might be black tops with drop shadows all over the place and cap logos the color of bruise. The Mets are whatever they wear. And if they wear Mercury Met tops every single day, then thats what the Mets logically are the Mercury Mets of New York. Or Anaheim. And the newly retired black/drop shadow look has been around long enough (almost 15 seasons) that there exists an entire generation of hardcore Mets fans, old enough to have graduated college, that, until this season, didnt know any other Met uni from watching live action. It really is in the eye of the beholder. Me, I think those mid 70s Winfield era Padres uniforms are classics to the Padres.
  22. TransMonk wrote: I can honestly say that my least favorite thing about the unis right now is the 50th anniversary patch. Not that it's a bad patch...I just like the traditional logo on the left sleeve. I am not a fan of the back of the cap logo shenanigans, tho. While I'm in the thread...I've moved past seeing everyone wearing 42 as meaningful on Jackie Robinson day. I would much rather see the one player on each team who best exemplifies the characteristics of Jackie Robinson get the honor of wearing 42 based on a vote of their teammates/coaches. I'm not sure who proposed that idea, because it is not an original idea of mine, but I think it is much better than seeing it on everyone. I'm with you on the Mets 50th ann. logo/patch. It looks to big, and like a light bulb. And I'm not too crazy about it. I'm not with you on the Jackie Robinson Day festivities. In fact, I don't think that MLB has gone nearly far enough in honoring him. I think that every player should wear a Jackie Robinson mask on Jackie Robinson day. Like those rubber Tor Johnson Halloween masks, only it would look like Jackie Robinson instead of Tor Johnson. And I'd make all the winning teams on Jackie Robinson Day wear the Jackie Robinson mask for their next game. They'd have to keep on wearing the JR mask until they lost. I'd also rename the stolen base the Jackie Robinson. As in: Jose Reyes is the all time Mets franchise leader in Jackie Robinsons. How many Jackie Robinsons did Jackie Robinson have in his career? And then I'd force every team to build a Jackie Robinson rotunda in their stadium. No grandfather clause either. Get crackin', Fenway. Maybe the players could walk pigeon toed on April 15th, if not all game, then at least just a little bit. Because that's how Jackie walked. And ran. And if jackie Robinson did it, so should everybody else.

  25. And just for a reminder, his strike three on Jason Bay the other day: Vanover really butchered that Bay at bat. Not that Bay needs any help. But Vanover's called strike two was just as bad as his called strike three.
