  1. Two opinions from Tim McCarver from this afternoon's Mets game on FOX: 1) Tim is sure that Strawberry's moon-shot '88 homer off the Olympic Stadium roof in Montreal was the longest HR ever hit in the history of MLB. And Tim's taking that opinion to his grave. 2) The Mets ain't gonna re-sign David Wright: it can't be done given the team's financial mess.

After Benitez annihilated the hapless Braves that hadda face him one day (this was around the time that Valentine first started using AB in save situations regularly*), the Braves were dumbfounded that it took the Mets about half a season to realize that Benitez shoulda been higher on the depth chart than Franco. * Not that I necessarily believe that the best reliever on the team should be used almost exclusively in save situations.
  3. I can count the relievers that were better than Benitez during his Met stint on the fingers of just one of my hands. Even if I was thumbless.

  5. Any Mets top 49 list that includes Armando and the Reeder, but not Ordonez, is on the right track, if you ask me, even with the. Wagner headscratcher.

  7. David Wright is on pace to break Kranepool's franchise career hit record on Monday, September 10, 2012, at home against the Nationals.
  8. The Faith and Fear blog has been so active lately, that Greg's comprehensive review of the Hofstra 50th might've been overlooked -- buried in the celebration of the Valdespin Mets. http://www.faithandfearinflushing.com/2012/05/07/letter-to-dana/

Wright's current pace (36 hits in 30 team games) accounts for him missing 10% of this season's games (3 out of 30) because of his pinky injury. A healthier Wright going forward projects to breaking Krane's record before 9/14/12. OTOH, Wright probably won't be hitting at a .375 clip all season long either.

Though I'm not sure whether those are odds for the Mets being one of the final four teams or final five teams in the league. Add up the odds for ALL the teams (in one league). If those odds add up to 500% then it's for five teams. If they only total 400% then they never got around to updating things to the new format. The odds for all NL teams, cumulatively, equals exactly 500%. Good idea.

  14. The San Francisco 49ers officially announced plans to create a physical home for the Edward J. DeBartolo, Sr. 49ers Hall of Fame with approximately 15,000 square feet of space earmarked at the new Santa Clara stadium. The 49ers former public relations director, Jerry Walker, has returned to the club as Team Archivist and will spend the next two years acquiring artifacts over the history of the franchise. According to the 49ers, the team is looking for donations and loans of nearly anything vintage such as game and practice apparel, fan clothing, printed materials like posters, programs, and magazines, collectibles, memorabilia, souvenirs, photos and videos, and really anything that might be attractive for the Hall of Fame. Walker also announced that the team's extravagant vision for their Hall of Fame will unfortunately delay the finish of the Jackie Robinson Wing. 49ers fans can expect the Robinson Wing to be completed in time for the opening of the 49ers second season in the new stadium. If you are interested in potentially donating or loaning anything to the 49ers Hall of Fame, you can email Jerry Walker at Jerry.Walker@49ers.com. If you do donate anything, let me know and we'll get some pictures up. http://www.ninersnation.com/2012/5/7/3006081/49ers-hall-of-fame-looking-for-historical-artifacts 15,000 square feet? I'm jealous. Mets fan have a HOF tiny enough that 15,000 of them could probably be squeezed into the Jackie Robinson Rotunda.

  16. And then there were two.
  17. If Chris Young makes the big club this year, I'm setting the over/under before he lands on the DL at 30 innings pitched.
  18. 2011-08-22 Dillon Gee vs. Cliff Lee How soon we (I) forget... I remembered their 2011 matchup because I started the IGT (We Got Gee and they Got Lee). http://archives.cranepoolforum.net/16700/f14_t16760.shtml BTW, I thought this thread would be about the Buffalo call-up slated to replace Tejada.
  19. Johan Santana's 2.61 ERA isn't low enough to crack the top 20. Now this is baseball like it oughtta be.

  21. I snapped the photo below at a presentation on Mets uniforms, conducted by Michael Cesarano, who created this web page on the UMDB, about Mets uniform history. Cesarano is displaying a Mets prototype uniform, never worn, presumably from the mid -80's based on the racing stripes (Cesarano never dated the uni), and very similar to Expos then contemporary garb.
