Later I think there was a Post article about him smiling yesterday. Because when effWilpon smiles, it's news, baby. And I can think of at least one direct descendant that inherited eff's perpetually dour mug.
  2. The Keith/Ike poster is gone.

  4. Ceetar wrote: Forgot where we were talking about this, so i'll just post it here. That's a neat one. Looks like Big Boy Duda in the on deck circle. The name of the thread that you forgot is "The Placards are Terrific". Didja see the 50th Anniversary Poster with M. Donald Grant on the left and effWilpon on the right? Or how about the one with Ollie Perez on the left and Mike Pelfrey on the right? In heavy circulation in Brooklyn is the subway poster featuring Jackie Robinson on the left and Jackie Robinson on the right.
  5. Most likely to crash straight through the outfield wall Rodney McCray style, leaving a gaping hole of his silhouette in the wall, just like it would happen in any Road Runner or Itchy & Scratchy cartoon. In fact, I'm surprised Murph hasn't done this already.
  6. Pelfrey is an enigma. Wrapped inside of a riddle. Wrapped inside of a jellied Madrilene. NY Mets front office considered releasing Michael Pelfrey before Opening Day PORT ST. LUCIE In a recent meeting that included the Mets executives and coaches, members of the front office suggested releasing Mike Pelfrey before Opening Day, according to two people with direct knowledge of the situation. None of the uniformed staff was in favor of the idea, and it was downplayed. Pelfrey further solidified his place in the rotation Thursday night, when he allowed one run in 6.1 innings Thursday night against Houston. His strongest outing of the Grapefruit League season left his ERA at 8.59. I saw all the things today that I have heard about, Terry Collins said. I saw a power sinker (with) that great movement, beating it in the dirt. He threw his curveball for strikes. Josh (Thole)said his split was outstanding tonight. Said Pelfrey: The command was by far the best it has been all spring training. I did a good job of keeping the ball down. One team official characterized the recent discussion about cutting Pelfrey as just what you do in meetings, throwing (stuff) against the wall, and we throw a lot of (stuff) against the wall, and went on to predict that Pelfrey would have a strong year for the Mets. But still: The very consideration of releasing Pelfrey and replacing him in the starting rotation with Chris Schwinden strongly suggests that club brass is not enamored of the seventh-year Met, who might very well be in his final season with the team if he remains in New York for that long. The perception of Pelfrey inside the clubhouse is much more positive. Beyond the standard platitudes of support, most Mets players still believe in Pelfrey, and are rooting for a teammate they like and respect. Pitching coach Dan Warthen raved about the revised mechanics that Pelfrey displayed in a recent appearance, which helped his velocity increase to 95 mph. After that game, one Met made a case for retaining Pelfrey that was representative of how many players feel, saying, If we got rid of him, he would (stick it to us). Teammates also offered genuinely favorable reviews after watching video of Pelfreys new mechanics, and felt that he had made an adjustment that could lead to a successful year. As for the suggestion of releasing Pelfrey, part of the idea was the pitchers non-guaranteed contract. If the Mets cut him before Opening Day, they will owe him roughly $1 million of the $5.68 million he will be paid this season. In the recent meeting, some in the front office wondered if that money would be better spent bolstering the Mets 2012 roster depth, with Schwinden in the rotation in place of Pelfrey. Schwinden remains in major-league camp, surviving another round of roster cuts on Thursday. Pelfrey is an enigma. Talented enough to inspire continued belief among many Mets that he can be a solid starter, the 28-year-old has yet to experience sustained success, save for extended streaks of dominance in 2008 and 2010. A former first-round draft pick, he is 50-54 in his career. Some of his longtime rivals, observing from a distance, believe that Pelfrey would benefit from pitching in a new city, free of the expectations of a fan base that often expresses its displeasure with him. Pelfrey has good stuff, said an NL East player who has faced Pelfrey for years. But you wonder if he just needs to get out of New York and start over. Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/ny-mets-front-office-considered-releasing-michael-pelfrey-opening-day-article-1.1053300#ixzz1qaOJsaOV
  7. I haven't watched more than five minutes of Spring Training, total, which is typical of me. Broiled wild salmon with chimichurri sauce and sauteed spinach w garlic.
  8. Mets Willets Point wrote: What about the signed bank checks? Do those go for face value? I saw a few items for sale autographed by Stengel. Don't know what's a fair price for those because I'm not into autographs. But they're not museum pieces.
  9. Things you don't see on menus anymore: Postum and Sanka. For sure. Postum, Sanka and the Madrilenes are as obsolete as the typewriters and carbon copy paper that the Mad Men's secretaries worked with. I confess that I had to google Postum because I didn't know what it was. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postum
  10. G-Fafif wrote: Of all the various "junk" from all the various trunks I've seen displayed in various threads, that Diamond Club menu might have kicked as much ass as Kevin Mitchell in a Pier Six brawl. Thanks. That menu's nothing. In my freezer, I've got three orders of 1964 Diamond Cub Jellied Madrilene and some after dinner mints. The Madrilenes are somewhat dessicated but the mints are in mint condition.
  11. Unless the good stuff already sold, most of the items on the site are copies of photographs, not original photos or photos struck from the original negatives. Those photos don't belong in a museum and shouldn't cost significantly more than the printing and processing fees.
  12. I'm not surprised. I also thought that the quality of the food at CF has been slipping since its inaugural season. Same old fucking' Wilpons. Another year or two, and the teeny tiny Mets Hall of Fame that exists only because the Mets were shamed into bulding will probably shrink by a third, too.
  13. Was Quintanilla released?
  14. Let's get this party started already. Dirges for Yogi? I hope Jane didn't forget to gotta believe. (New York magazine, 7/30/73 issue)

  16. Mets Pop Culture Sightings 2010: Lane's office and Don's insights. Lane and Ken probably sealed the deal over drinks in the Charcoal Room, which, Leonard Koppett wrote in The New York Mets: The Whole Story, was a nightspot in its own right. After a night game, it became the scene of an impromptu party for season box holders. If I had to pick up the Mad Men's bill, it'd be easier on my wallet if that bill were the restaurant instead of the bar tab. Here's Lane and Ken's eating options circa 1964-5, had they sloshed on down to the Diamond Club after festivities at the Charcoal Room. Not that the Diamond Club was a dry club.
  17. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Eventually some new conventional wisdom about bullpen management will come along. I'm glad to hear that. If there's one thing I learned in life, it's that nothing lasts forever. Except maybe Ed Kranepool's Met franchise all-time hit record.
  18. I've had it up to here with the way relievers are used what with the closer schmoser and the this guy gets the last inning and I know so two and a half weeks ahead of time no matter who's batting and what's on base so I'm not gonna make any predictions, 'specially about a pitcher who accumulates seasons 40 innings at a time.
  19. Edgy DC wrote: The northeast photo is clearly the same as the southeast one. Why would the watercolorist paint the white jersey blue? I'm guessing that it was to have Tobi in a period correct Mets uniform to match the 1985 style Topps card.
  20. Disporoportionatley high number of Mets baseball cards relative to his contributions. Pedro Feliciano, by comparison, didn't appear on more than half a dozen cards for all of his innings pitched over almost 10 years, and back then, there were about a dozen card companies licensed to print.
  21. Their Golden anniversary won't be as memorable as their Silver one.
  22. British import Lane Pryce is adapting to American culture just fine; he's one proud Mets fan. As Mad Men moves into the Summer of Love, not even the likes of Joe Grzenda and Nick Wilhite can dissuade Lane's rooting interest. Lane and his odd Mets pennant both make the move to Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce's new digs.
  23. Does anyone here have an Auntie Gruh-Zen-duh?
  24. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Bennett was the third of three lefthanders traded for during a 2-week span in June of 1967. Nick Willhite and Bob Hendley were the first 2. Koosman and McGraw at the time were in the minors (McGraw additionally was in Westrum's doghouse). Bennett made six appearances before getting farmed out himself. I take it that you're the expert around here on fringe 1967 Mets. So how do you pronounce Joe Grzenda's last name? And how many syllables?
