  2. I saw this thread at about 9:30 this morning on the forum index. There were already more than 20 responses and I tried to figure out what it might be about. I thought that Tebow died, but that the thread was mistakenly placed in the Baseball Forum instead of the Non-Baseball forum.
  3. This is some racket Topps has going. And if the money's there, Topps can keep the Mets leadoff HR theme going so long as Reyes and Grandy continue to leapfrog each other in leadoff HR's. [fimg=555:13efwp0s]https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8291/29256358920_77675e899f_o.png[/fimg:13efwp0s]
  4. And it's a rookie card, too. [fimg=474:33ell7wj]https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8506/28856090944_e9c53af85e_o.png[/fimg:33ell7wj]
  5. The Mets once had "The Doctor" and now it looks like they have "The Spin Doctor".
  6. "Oh great!" -- the players are now saying. Now we gotta run out foul balls, too.
  7. Vic Sage wrote: They should have skipped deGrom again. He's either throwing it down the middle or walking guys. He's probably bewildered, too. I hope that's kinda what it is -- that he has mechanical problems, rather than being fatigued and needing some rest. Because history sez that pitchers that are kinda run down in September don't recover that same season, even with extra rest.

What is Decades? http://www.decades.com/wheretowatch/ These are just some, but not all of the programs shown on Decades: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_programs_broadcast_by_Decades

In Start the Revolution Without Me, he and Donald Sutherland got to be part of two comic pairings, as both played two roles. If we had to make lists of Hollywood people that we thought were gonna break big but didn't, Cleavon Little might be at or near the top of my list.

It's probably already up. Hey, Familia's up for the Mets all-time save record. That could be another Topps card.

  12. Dave Hillman was a man who made his living on a hill.
  13. That happens with a lot of movies. The "official" year of a film, for Oscar purposes, is based on when the movie opens in Los Angeles. But some movies open outside of L.A. in the previous year. I don't know if that's the case with The Producers, but it could be. EDIT: Oops, Vic's post snuck in ahead of mine. I didn't know about that L.A. wrinkle in the rule. I didn't know that it mattered where in the US the film opened for Oscar purposes. Now I do.
  14. That "first" Waco Kid was Gig Young. Nice write-up.
  15. Mac Scarce pitched in just one game for the Mets.

In 1962, Perry Smith is in custody.

  18. G-Fafif wrote: Charlie Neal Winner! Winner! It's Charlie Neal who's the last Met on my list. Neal broke 20 HR's in 1958, the Dodgers first season in LA, where the left field wall at the baseball configured Coliseum was just 250 feet away down the line and 320 feet to left-center. A 40 foot screen was erected to compensate for the absurdly short dimensions, but still, a fly ball hitter could have a field day exploiting that side of the stadium, which Neal did.
  19. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: Brian McRae? Incorrect because Mcrae had a 20 HR season for the Mets. Also, it was his only 20 HR season ever. So there's that, too.

  21. Look at this freakin awesome photo! From Sports Papers on twitter. Name 'em all. Should be easy. Extra points for whoever is in the background. I think one guy might be Clark Kent. Those are the '62 Dodger-Mets: Hodges, Labine, Lavagetto, Craig, Zimmer and Neal. I'll go with Frank Thomas just behind Craig's head.

  23. Nolan Ryan's 1972 Topps card was an air-brush job -- an Angel logo painted over a Mets cap and Mets home pinstripes still visible -- the jersey cropped just below the neckline to conceal the Mets word-mark . Ryan's card appeared in Topps 1st series and so long as Topps was commited to releasing Ryan's card in that first serties, there was no time to produce a Ryan card in a proper Angels uniform given the technology of the day insofar as the Ryan trade occurred in December of 1971. Ryan's trade partner Jim Fregosi's card also appeared in that 1st series. But Fregosi appeared as an Angel rather than as an airbrushed Met. Fregosi would also appear in that year's high card numbered Traded set as a Met. Perhaps Topps had determined which players would appear in the traded subset early on and so that's why Fregosi's base card was with his former team. This theory sounds correct because Ryan was not included in the traded set and before the 1972 season, Ryan was a mediocre pitcher, albeit with baseball's fastest fastball. So it made a lot of sense for Ryan to be excluded from that traded set, which for the most part, was made of stars and former stars. This week, Topps released an image of what undoubtedly would've been used for Fregosi's airbrushed '72 base card had Topps decided not to include Fregosi in the traded set: [fimg=555]https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8035/28984788030_e9474242ac_o.jpg[/fimg]
  24. I'll give you credit for Shamsky, but not for Paquette because I missed Paquette, too. How the hell am I supposed to know that Paquette once hit 20 HR's? You think I checked every single Met when I set up this furshlugginer quiz? That would've taken me like all day. I got one more on my list.
