  1. Edgy MD wrote: Jim Beauchamp and Félix Millan. Yeah, that article I read should be fact checked. I was thinking of Millan and George Stone. Beauchamp also qualifies. The article I'm referring to is a piece about George Stone. The article states that Stone was one of only three players to have played with Mays and Aaron. Which just can't be right. Maybe Stone was one of only three Mets to have teamed with Mays and Aaron. Anyway, here's the piece: http://www.uticaod.com/blogs/20161127/stone-relishes-time-with-mets--73-world-series Lotsa stuff on the Seaver/Stone '73 WS decision.
  2. Here's a quiz question I just came up with after reading a baseball related article. A "fact" in that article inspired this quiz, although I think that the underlying "fact" I'm relying upon is incorrect. Explanations to follow, But first this quiz which is probably correct even if the aforementioned "fact" might not be. Who are the only two Mets who were teammates of Willie Mays and Hank Aaron? To win this quiz, you have to correctly identify the two Mets in the same post.

  4. I still hate their unis. They're bad and infantile.

  8. Edgy MD wrote: José Rijo probably deserved more Cy Young consideration than he got in coming in fourth in 1991 and fifth in 1993, both times behind Atlanta Brave winners. In 1993, baseball-reference has him leading the league in Pitcher WAR behind his strikeout crown, and it's not even close. Not a lot of Reds have been serious contenders. Cueto came close in 2012 and 2014. Jack Billingham did good in 1973 and 1974, but that was behind an all-World offense. Tom Seaver, of course, was totally jobbed by Fernandomania in 1981. And then there was Mario Soto, who might have been the best NL pitcher during the era of the Joe Torre led bad two-button pullover Mets, but never had that one brilliant season where he was without doubt, the best of them all.

  11. This thread title is starting to creep me out a bit.
  12. I don't see why not. Reed was the better pitcher last season. (But not according to Schaefer).
  13. With the baseball post season being such a crapshoot, the Cubs would be incredibly lucky just to return to the World Series,no matter how good this team continues to be.

  15. The game of baseball is trending towards this mode of play. Granted, this would constitute a huge evolutionary leap, probably the biggest yet, and may not happen in my lifetime, if ever. But it's trending that way. It makes total sense to me. Two more points to make here, one obvious and the other less so. One ... Obviously, the advantage to this new style of play lies in the fact that your opponents haven't yet adapted. The advantage disappears when everybody else is doing it. Two ... Another reason to go that route, unmentioned in the author's piece, is that pitchers lose effectiveness with every successive pass through the opponent's lineup. Every pitcher. Not only the fringe pitchers hanging on in desperation for their baseball lives, but even the elite Cy Young caliber superstar hurlers.

  17. G-Fafif wrote: ... you wish there had been more footage than postseason and a handful of games otherwise, but I thought the whole thing was well done .... Being that footage of regular season games was rarely preserved back then, I was surpriseed to see so much footage of the actual game where the Pirates started an all black/latino nine. There was even pre-game or batting practice footage of that game. But after thinking about it, I figured that whoever was in charge of deciding whether or not to save game film recognized the historical significance of that game, and decided to save footage, just like Pirates footage from the following season, albeit limited, exists of Clemente's 3,000th hit.
  18. Sadly, the team's biggest stars that season --- Willie Stargell, Roberto Clemente and Dock Ellis --- are all dead. Also, did Al Oliver lose his left eye over the years?
  19. The '86 Mets get the Dock Ellis LSD treatment. Fasten your seatbelts: [youtube:15053mxp]tZZ0w7vMz-4[/youtube:15053mxp] Recommended: click the youtube button so you can watch this in full screen mode.
  20. Here's something to think about: If the Mets were to QO Walker, then why? What do you think the Mets would prefer to get from that QO? A draft pick, or one year's worth of Walker?
  21. Zvon wrote: This special was surprisingly excellent with really classic footage for the most part. And very candid conversation. Worth watching. But when the narrative got to the 1970 playoffs (that's what playoffs were called back then --- playoffs) where the Reds beat the Pirates to take the NL pennant, the footage was of Joe Morgan batting against Pittsburgh. Morgan was an Astro in 1970, traded to Cincy during the off-season in between the '71 and '72 seasons. The same off-season that yielded the Ryan for Fregosi trade.
  22. Centerfield wrote: The decision on Walker really should have nothing to do with Wright. Other than the fact that both injuries relate to the back, the two injuries could not be more different. I wasn't suggesting that this has anything to do with either the nature or the similarity of the injuries to Wright and Walker. If the Mets think that they can count on Wright to play 3/4 time, they might go with a platoon of Wright/Flores/Reyes to cover second and third, thinking that they won't need Walker. In this scenario, Wright's recovery is relevant to whether they QO Walker.
  23. Do you think this decision is tied in to what the Mets think and expect of David Wright? If you think Walker's damaged goods, then based on what little I know, Wright appears to be damaged goods x10.
  24. batmagadanleadoff wrote: So when was the first time, if ever, that the Mets trotted out an all black/latino starting nine? The first black/latino catcher to start a game for the Mets, post 9/1/71, was Luis Rosado on 9/28/77. That was Rosado's only start as a Mets catcher. Craig Swan was the starting pitcher that day, so that game can't be it. After that, Alex Trevino caught many games for the Mets between '78 & '81. So anyone interested in solving this riddle may want to start there. That's it for the 70's: Trevino and Rosado. Junior Ortiz was the only other black/latino catcher to start games for the Mets in the 1980's. Black/latino Mets catchers in the 1990's: Orlando Mercado Alex Trevino Alberto Castillo
