  4. Let's see if Syndergaard can pitch tomorrow. 'Cause there's no guarantee.

MY issue with second base is that they cleared the deck, more or less, for Dilson... then flipped him 2/3 of the way through the year for a win-now part. Good points LWFS. I'd like to think that a NY team coming off of a World Series appearance could afford both but not this ownership. That's the real shame of it: that the Mets might've wanted to keep Murph, but let him loose because of their finances. Just a reminder, but the Mets offered Murph a QO of $15.8M for 2016. Murph ended up signing with the Nats for an average of $12.5M per season (3 yr/$37.5M contract). It's pathetic that a NY team couldn't afford both Cespedes and the price of Murph's DC contract, which the Mets more than matched for one year. Oh, and one other thing: Beginning with the 2015 playoffs and going forward up through today, Murph's been better than Cespedes.

  11. Apr. 20, 2017 at 5:09 PM Baseball’s New Leadoff Hitters Don’t Need To Be Speed Demons Just look at Kyle Schwarber. By Neil Paine 538.com Intro: Rickey Henderson. Kenny Lofton. Ichiro Suzuki. Kyle Schwarber? Schwarber may not play exactly like those other great leadoff hitters, but he’s been at the front of the Cubs’ lineup in every game he’s played in so far this season, and he currently ranks third in MLB among leadoff hitters in on-base percentage and fourth in OPS. With numbers like those, he’s shaping up to easily replace departed No. 1 hitter Dexter Fowler, who signed a big contract to hit leadoff in St. Louis this past offseason. Schwarber personifies a strange new trend sweeping through lineup cards across baseball: The leadoff guy who bears no resemblance to a prototypical leadoff guy. This modern leadoff man hits for big power, isn’t afraid to strike out and rarely steals bases. He’s essentially a middle-of-the-lineup hitter who happens to hit first — the next rung on the evolutionary ladder of lineup construction. read it all at https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/baseballs-new-leadoff-hitters-dont-need-to-be-speed-demons/ Hi. My name is bat Magadan leadoff and I coulda told you most of this stuff more than 25 years ago.
  12. The Save Ruined Relief Pitching. The Goose Egg Can Fix It. By Nate Silver Filed under MLB Published Apr. 17, 2017 https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/goose-egg-new-save-stat-relief-pitchers/ Intro: Hall of Fame relief pitcher Richard “Goose” Gossage isn’t the biggest fan of the “Moneyball” revolution. Here at FiveThirtyEight, we don’t think his expletive-laced tirades about nerds ruining baseball have always found their target the way his fastballs once did. But on one point, he’s absolutely right: The save is a stupid [bleep]ing statistic. Gossage recently lashed out against modern closers — including all-time saves leader Mariano Rivera — arguing that they aren’t used in the right situations and that cheaply earned saves exaggerate closers’ value compared to the pitchers of his day. “I would like to see these guys come into more jams, into tighter situations and finish the game. … In the seventh, eighth or ninth innings. I don’t think they’re utilizing these guys to the maximum efficiency and benefit to your ballclub,” Gossage said. “This is not a knock against Mo [Rivera],” he continued later.1 “[but] I’d like to know how many of Mo’s saves are of one inning with a three-run lead. If everybody in that [bleep]ing bullpen can’t save a three-run lead for one inning, they shouldn’t even be in the big leagues.” Gossage is right about pretty much all of that. A pitcher probably shouldn’t get much credit for handling just the final inning when his team has a three-run lead. Moreover, the top relief pitchers today are less valuable than they were in Gossage’s heyday in the 1970s and ’80s. In large part, that’s because managers are trying to maximize the number of saves for their closer, as opposed to the number of wins for their team. They’re managing to a stat and playing worse baseball as a result.

  15. Batmags thinks Willie Randolph is the worst mgr in Mets history IIRC, but I'm not making a connection to the thread. What are you doing posting at 11:07PM? Weren't you watching Better Call Saul? FYI -- I'd rank the Mets worst managers as Dallas (worst) and Willie (next worst). You know how much I hated Willie because of this forum, whereas there wasn't even an internet, let alone the CPF during Dallas's reign of terror and general arm shredding. But the loathe factor was especially high for Willie given how good a team he inherited and had to work with. Hey! That's a discussion for another thread: Which Mets manager inherited the best squad to begin his tenure? I suppose it's either Davey or Willie.

  18. Terry Collins responds to your gripes: http://nypost.com/2017/04/15/jacob-degroms-gem-wasted-as-mets-bullpen-implodes/ excerpt: Should Collins have left in deGrom, who matched a career high with 13 strikeouts over seven innings consisting of 97 pitches? Collins said it wasn’t an option. “I don’t know how many times we have to say that right now we have made a commitment to take care of these guys and not overdo it,” Collins said. “It’s easy to second guess when you blow a save — we could have run Jake out there. We have three pitchers that are coming off surgery. If Jake goes out there and he gets in trouble, the immediate thing is, ‘Why didn’t you take him out?’ I want to protect these guys. “Jake was basically at 100 pitches, he was pitching great, that’s enough. Fernando Salas has done nothing but put up zeroes, so we went with that.” Collins also defended his decision not to use lefty Jerry Blevins, who had pitched four times in the previous five games, to face Yelich. “We tried to avoid that,” Collins said. “[salas] has gotten lefties out, he’s gotten righties out. It’s just one of those nights.” The loss was the first the Mets could perhaps tie to Jeurys Familia’s 15-game suspension for violating MLB’s domestic violence policy. Familia, who pitched in a minor league game Saturday for Single-A St. Lucie, will not return before Thursday. “I don’t even think about that,” Collins said. “You go with who you’ve got. We’ve played very well and gotten the job done with the guys we have got down there. Tonight it didn’t work.” For a second straight night, general manager Sandy Alderson, clearly disgusted, was seen stalking around the clubhouse after his bullpen folded. On Friday, lefty Josh Edgin surrendered a run in the ninth in the Mets’ 3-2 loss. Salas, who hadn’t allowed an earned run in his previous seven appearances, walked Miguel Rojas with two outs in the eighth. Yelich then unloaded into the right-field seats before Stanton launched a shot into the shrubbery behind the center-field fences. But Salas, who pitched two shutout innings for the Mets on Thursday in their 16-inning victory, insisted fatigue was not an issue. “I feel bad for the team because they played hard every inning,” Salas said. DeGrom’s pitches were as elusive as the Easter Bunny, but had just as much hop for most of the game. The righty matched a career high with 13 strikeouts on a night he allowed only four hits and one walk over seven innings. But two of those hits were homers — back-to-back shots by Justin Bour and Marcell Ozuna in the second — accounting for the Marlins’ two runs against him. “I was battling mechanics all night, but I was able to make pitches,” deGrom said. “Early on those were two bad pitches.” And the stud righty said he had no problem with Collins’ decision to remove him after the seventh. “I kind of figured I was done after that inning,” he said. “It’s early in the season and off of surgery I had a feeling I was going to be done. “The goal is to be able to pitch all year, and I wasn’t able to do that last year. Salas has done a great job for us, he did a great job for us last year. It was a rough inning for him and that is rare that it happens. I felt very comfortable handing the ball over to the guys in the bullpen.”
