  1. Sure the Mets could contend next year, but all I see are questionmarks. Who knows what Conforto is? He suffered a career ending injury last year that could easily lower a player's ceiling. Cespedes'll be another year from the wrong side of his peak. And deGrom and Syndergaard aren't nearly enough. Yogi Berra's Mets had the best staff in baseball and every team, even the worst ones, have some star power. See, Trout, Mike.
  2. Drew Gagnon, scheduled to make his Mets debut tonight, will be the 48th Met of the 2018 season. With more debuts likely to follow in the coming weeks as the Mets go into sell mode as the non-waiver trade deadline nears, this could be the season that the Mets break the franchise record for most players in a season --- 54 in 1967. They had been very successful on the field, in their final years there reaching far into the NBA playoffs. (OK, they had traded Bill Russell to Boston for two white guys, but one was a local favorite, having played at St. Louis U. But that was many years prior to them leaving.) His reason? I don't remember the exact numbers, but I'm approximating, and they are sufficient to demonstrate his hypothesis. Three years prior to leaving, the Hawks made the playoffs, and had one non-white starter. Average attendance was 15,000/ game. Two years prior, the Hawks made the playoffs, had two non-white starters, and averaged 13,00/ game. One year prior, the Hawks made the playoffs, had three non-white starters (and several non-white key reserves) and averaged 11,000/game. I also recall that one of his books, Jim Brosnan commented how, in its heart, St. Louis was really a Southern city. This type of behavior does not surprise me. Later The other best line is about the Cards GM listening to St. Looey's racist troglodyte fans. Like a Southern city? Ferguson is St. Looey's suburb.

I got about 8.2% down, or 500 home runs over the course of the season. That's still be about 2017 levels and 1500 more than 2014. And we've still got some hot summer months of above average to make up some of that. You're right. HR's are down by about nine percent, with most of July and and all of August left, the warmest months.

  7. I'd take him back in a second if he can show he's got got the talent to pitch in the Majors. He's paid his dues -- for doing something that in my heart, I'm certain that major leaguers continue to do and get away with. And what Mejia did pales in comparison to what Jose Reyes did.
  8. Why so little fanfare? I love this cover. In fact, it's my all time favorite and it's been so my whole adult life. Maybe even earlier. It's classic Mullin, demonstrating the artist's ability to tell a complex tale with a simple illustration in the style of political cartooning. I'm surprised it won, since quite a number of youse professed your love for the '68 challenger. More so than the vote tallies indicate, so some of you '68 lovers either changed your minds or didn't bother to vote in what became a blowout. I purposely did not telegraph my preference beforehand, figuring that if I did, anyone on the fence or indifferent to the last round would've voted for the '68 just to spite me. Also, I never participated in a CPF song parody contest. Because I know that I'd never win. Not that there's any shame in losing, but I'd never win so much as a single head to head matchup---- even if I deserved to win. There. I said it.
  9. Anyone here got a problem with Trump jokes in the baseball forum? Speak up.
  10. I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out that Cespedes lied about his age and he's really two or three years older than everyone thinks he is.

  12. Ceetar wrote: Because there's no way this team is this bad, they've got more talent than they're exhibiting atm, and with the right moves, they could win the division. They could do this even if they don't raise payroll 50 million, change owners, or fire every doctor that's ever touched a Met. 2015 and 2016 were not flukes, they were a result of key moves. I had a blast those two seasons and they don't need to be dismissed as lucky. With enough hindsight at my disposal, I'm calling total fluke on 2015. Dont forget that they sucked and looked headed for another Madoff ravaged season until Wilmer cried and they went unconscious for about five weeks. It was the Mets version of Linsanity, where Lin made the cover of SI for two straight weeks and for those two weeks, played like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Lebron James all rolled into one. Unsustainable. Certainly, Cespedes's Babe Rutb run was an unsustainable Yosanity streak for the ages. Once in a lifetime, you go an an incredible odds defying roll where everything comes up lucky sevens for a while. That was 2015.
  13. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Their unexpected World Series run of 2015 still serves as cover for how broken and dysfunctional, especially relative to their market, this franchise is. bump

  15. With their lead over the Marlins now reduced to a half game, the Mets could be in last place tomorrow.
  16. At least the Mets didn't trade Nimmo for McCutcheon.
  17. Who signed that ball -- Rusty Staub?
  18. Foli, Strawberry, Wilson.
  19. Erik Goeddel's pitching the best ball of his major league career. After he gets as far away from the Mets as is possible. Why am I not surprised?
  20. Zvon wrote: I'm into talking pictures. Keep those pics coming. Everything else is just brutal.
  21. Fred's gonna try and sign Ichiro any day now.
  22. ]Yeah, right. Like the Dodgers are gonna score another run off deGrom to take the lead. It'll take them three games to score another run off of him.
