What do these cards have to do with a give up day? Holy Stumpers! It's The Riddler! I give up. What do these cards have to do with give up day? Sweet song for sweet times. Meanwhile, this song is so infectious, I must've clicked on the youtube link at least three times since FAFIF posted it. Now if you wanna see and hear what America was listening to in 1969 when the Mets were romping to their World Series crown, check out this Dick Clark video. Where have you gone, Ratso Rizzo? Plus, the obligatory Batman tie-in.

You can look. But you can't touch. Test market All-Star cards for the Latin American market is what we've got for youse today. But if youse wanna lay your actual hands on one of these babies, youse are gonna hafta get your passports in order because these All-Star cards, starring MLB's All-Stars, aren't available at a store near you. Either that or check ebay. Whatever. Holy Caramba! https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48659522312_9ef39bc11d_c.jpg>

So "candy" in "you are my candy girl" -- is that a noun or an adjective? You could look up the lyrics to see if there's a comma after "candy" but the comma is optional. So a missing comma -- and it's missing. I looked -- doesn't answer the question.

The #2 hitter may come to bat in situations as important as the #3 hitter, but they may well be important in different ways, and there are important distinctions between the National League and American League with regard to how lineups perform and how players complement each other in the lineup. Sure. But either way and to the extent that it matters, you don't put a crappy hitter or a struggling hitter or the guy that's the sixth best hitter among your starting position players in the #2 hole no matter what league you play in.

Sweet song for sweet times. Did you just post a youtube video of The Archies Sugar, Sugar? Unbelievable, given the Batman card I was just about to post. Either your powers of telepathy are off the charts or you just might be the guy who hacked into my computer to get that Alonso Highlight card before its intended public release. This is a job for the Dynamic Duo to investigate as Commissioner Gordon and Chief O'Hara are clearly in over their heads on this one. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48654540172_1c4170c517_c.jpg>

The Preeminent 42+ in Mets History
batmagadanleadoff replied to G-Fafif's topic in New York Mets Talk
The preeminent 42 in Mets history needs to clout 11 more homers in the Mets remaining 34 games to break the MLB all time single season rookie HR record. It's a heady pace - about a homer every three games, but that's what Alonso's been doing all season long. And the Mets remaining road schedule is favorable to the task at hand with away games in the bandboxes at Philly (as we speak) and Cincy, a series at HR haven mile high Coors Field and a series at DC, where the Nats home stadium is the second best HR park this season. Go-Go Alonso! -
We broke open a new pack of Batman Mets cards ($2.00 a pack for one card! --- they're so popular we're gonna gouge youse a bit) and pulled a Batman69 insert. So let's celebrate that amazin' 1969 baseball season with Batman and Robin a little bit more. But first, some trivia. It's quiz-time here at Typewriter Chewing Gum and here's the quiz question: What song was at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1969 when the Mets clinched the NL East division? Also, what song was at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1969 when the Mets won the pennant? And finally, what song was at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1969 when the Mets won the World Series? You have to identify all of these songs correctly in the same post to win this quiz. But I'm gonna make it easy for youse. Or rather, history and not me is gonna make it easier for youse. It's the same song all three times as this major hit held the top of the charts for about a month while the Mets were completing their miracle. Also, this song is Billboard's song of the year for 1969. To the batpoles!

The Two Hole The old-school book says to put a bat-control guy here. Not a great hitter, but someone who can move the lead-off hitter over for one of the next two hitters to drive in. The Books says the #2 hitter comes to bat in situations about as important as the #3 hitter, but more often. That means the #2 hitter should be better than the #3 guy, and one of the best three hitters overall. And since he bats with the bases empty more often than the hitters behind him, he should be a high-OBP player. Doesn't sound like someone who should be sacrificing, does it? I couldn't agree more with this one. I always thought the #2 hole was the most butchered botched up spot in the batting order even though the leadoff slot draws the most strategy talk. You really need a stud here if you got one. Old school managers would often put the 2nd worst hitting starting position player here -- the leftover guy -- the guy who's not as bad a hitter as the guy batting eighth -- on the premise that you could use his "bat control" to bunt the runner over to second base -- now compounding the error by not only having a crappy hitter in the two hole but then using him to play one run baseball in the first inning -- with supposedly your most lethal hitters due up after the crappy hitting #2 guy. Of course, as the article points out, none of this is supposed to matter much anymore according to the modern research so long as a manager isn't making a ridiculously absurd lineup.

I read on a Beckett board that there might be a dozen of these out there with Robin sporting go-go boots. Rumor or fact? I dunno what Beckett's got or what's "out there". But the Alonso HR record-breaker highlight card is a brand new first day release. So it's a total rumor or someone's been hacking into my computer. And if I've been hacked, I'll get Batman on the case and then those hacking fiends will be in big trouble. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48651401778_b862885347_c.jpg> I'll tell you what ain't out there and no one here's got. Batman Mets All-Star cards. It's a special subset that's being test-marketed in Latin America only, especially to capitalize on the red-hot Argentine and Mexican Bat-Markets. Argentina, especially, is mucho loco for Batman. These cards are sponsored by Canal TV (¡Tu TV guia favorita!) and aren't available stateside. I'll see what I can do about gettting youse a sneak peek, though.

Move along, nothing left to see. Still here for batmag's cards Me too! And youse still have the Polar Bear to follow, given up or not. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48651401778_b862885347_c.jpg>

Another Tweaky Tuesday means another tweak. Today, Gil Hodges gets the tweak treatment. I never realized until just now that Commissioner Gordon wasn't the only one with a direct red phone hot-line to the Batcave. Apparently Gil and President Nixon also had one. Tricky Dick, I get. Because who knows what national emergency the caped crusader would be needed to solve, especially if one of Gotham's super-villains decided to cross state lines? But what would Gil need one for? He had Tom Seaver. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48642741398_3bc3017bc3_c.jpg>

I'll go with the patron saint of this quiz, who not only did it twice, but during the Mets first two postseasons. So he hadda be the first two-timer, if there are others, which I don't think so. Jim Mcandrew. OE Wrong thread.

It's Readers' Mail here all week long. Just in case youse didn't hear it the first 31 times we here at Typewriter Chewing Gum mentioned it. And we get lotsa reader mail. Today, we have the perfect Batman Mets card to go along with your breakfast. If you're a late riser. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48636696391_4553b39cc6_c.jpg>

Ed Hearn (never got to play) Gary caught every inning of every game, and they couldn't even find Ed a single spot? Oof. I don't know how I never realized that. This could be a different trivia question, and with a significantly increased degree of difficulty: Mets on active postseason rosters but who never entered a game. It's happened in every postseason year other than 1999 and 2000. I can think of one particular Met who pulled that "feat" twice -- two different seasons. He'd be the patron saint of this category.

Well, if youse are gonna trickle back in here to give up, or at least contemplate giving up -- which is revocable, ya know --- youse can at least enjoy the latest Batman Mets cards while you ponder your dwindling rooting interest. What with Tuesday almost over, we'll squeeze in one more for Tweaky Tuesday before the clock strikes midnight even though we're pretty sure this Jacob Rhame redo really should be released on Makeover Monday. Sigh? Or die? Bobby Bonilla, of all people. Is that the answer? Boy, I should've known that. If I really pressed myself, I think I would've got Bonilla. I obsessed over his mere presence on the 1999 post-season roster. He was practically a cripple, so banged up was he by the time the post-season arrived. If Bonilla ever got on base --and I don't remember if he did-- Valentine woulda hadda burn another sub to pinch-run for Bonilla -- which was especially a problem if I recall, because Piazza was being held together by shoestrings and scotchtape. I always suspected that "management", ahem, forced Bonilla on Valentine for the playoffs, against Valentine's wishes. Wasn't Luis Lopez in the doghouse at the end of that season because he punched he who no one was allowed to mess with-- the Great Exalted St. Rey Ordonez? Because Lopez woulda given Bobby V. the flexibillity he coulda used.

Vic Sage wrote: [Frisella] was a good reliever for the Mets for a few years, before getting traded for Millan and George Stone, who helped get us to the WS the following year. As significant as that trade turned out to be for the Mets (you left out Gary Gentry), did you know how close that trade almost came to being a blockbuster? The teams were determined to upgrade their catchers -- the Mets wanting more offense and the Braves wanting more defense -- and so the teams came very close to including Jerry Grote and Earl Williams in that deal The catcher part of that deal was nixed at the 11th hour. Not sure if the Mets woulda made the playoffs without Grote. They were a 90+ win team with Grote in the lineup in '73.

Makeover or tweak? We gave up trying to figure this one out. Alls we know is that we made Tom Terrific Terrificer. Take that, Tom Brady.
