The TV Batgirl's look was based heavily on the 1966 comic book reboot of Batgirl, which, going around in circles, was released to coordinate with the Batman TV show. [FIMG=444]https://www.cgccomics.com/boards/applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5125/5377499020_d0a98c45a8_b.jpg&key=00811fc0ae1d6f8630c1b1d16bdeea88dc2c077af175124686c05d4de94c6d1c[/FIMG] I didn't include it in my Flores baseball card, but in the lower right hand corner of that Batgirl costume sketch is a handwritten "OK" notation, indicating that the sketch was approved by the TV show's executives. I tweaked the Flores card. I changed the text alongiside the Batgirl sketch and I lightened up some of Flores's facial features. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48718360661_00cb2ca983_c.jpg>
  2. Wow is that guy annoying. (Not Willie -- the other guy). Plus, Breuer talks to Wlllie as if Willie were senile.
  3. =G-Fafif post_id=21525 time=1568222026 user_id=55] The must wins will present themselves in retrospect. For now, there is no yesterday, there is no tomorrow. One one-game season at a time.
  4. Koosman's rookie season was sensational. His problem was that it happened in 1968. And whenever anyone ever talks about the best NL pitchers of that season, the conversation begins and ends with Bob Gibson. Really. As if Gibson was the only NL pitcher that even existed that year. Koosman, teammate Tom terrific, and Larry Dierker, just to name a few off the top of my head without checking things, were all brilliant that season. Koosman threw, what, eight compete game shutouts that year? Eight!
  5. Here's the link to BRef's 2019 NL Pitching Leaders page. Click on the "expand all leaderboards" link so that each pitching category opens to show the top 10 list instead of just the leader. https://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/NL/2019-pitching-leaders.shtmlhttps://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/NL/2019-pitching-leaders.shtml Anyways, I think it's indisputable and beyond debate that Max Scherzer, pound for pound and rate-wise, has been the NL's best pitcher this season. But youse can check and decide for yourselves. deGrom rates higher than Scherzer according to some voters, because of his edge over Scherzer in Games Started -- 29 to 24 -- and, (it logically follows) in Innings Pitched -- 183 to 154. Scherzer's slowed down recently due to some injury issues where he's missed a few starts and, when used, has been under a strict pitch count limit, I think. But still, Scherzer's WAR is still higher than deGrom's even though Jake's pitched 20 more innings than Max.
  6. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=21426 time=1568136815 user_id=68] OE: ... If Alonso breaks that record, you gotta use your connections to get that record in next year's Mets media guide.
  7. Last night, Pete Alonso clinched a title that hadn't been in doubt for months, winning 2019 championship in the perennial Mets Savers vs. Sluggers battle. Thirty-nine times in 58 seasons, the Mets' leading slugger has had more home runs than the Mets' leading closer has had saves, whereas 18 times, the advantage has gone to the saver. One time it was a tie. Why yes, you can read http://www.faithandfearinflushing.com/2019/09/10/home-runs-will-save-us/more about it here. That 1962 Frank Thomas over Craig Anderson record looks unbeatable, at least to me, anyways. For a second, I thought that you personally calculated every retroactive save from before it was made into an official statistic to write that piece and so I said to myself: "No, he didn't (Even though I'm pretty sure he would if he had to - that's dedication)." So I went to BRef to check on this and I saw that BRef has saves stats for the pre-save era. Very enjoyable read. OE: Wait a second. It's not so far-fetched that Alonso might break that Frank Thomas record this year, as you point out. I should've finished the article before I wrote this post, but I hadda go to BRef to check out retroactive saves and got thrown off the pace a bit. If Alonso breaks that record, you gotta use your connections to get that record in next year's Mets media guide.
  8. Benjamin Grimm wrote: So is he an absolute shoo-in for Rookie of the Year, or is there some other candidate out there that I'm not aware of who has a decent shot? NL Rookie of the Year 1. Pete Alonso, Mets 2. Mike Soroka, Braves 3. Fernando Tatis Jr., Padres Tatis moves down as Soroka continues his pretty incredible run atop the Braves rotation. The second-best ERA in the National League, a top-five WAR among NL pitchers and his importance to a team running away with its division all combine to move him ahead of the phenom who won't play again this season. Alonso is winning this award, though, as we've said through nearly every update. The young slugger leads the baseball in home runs, along with a top five offensive WAR and top seven OPS in the National League. Even as a first baseman, he's just barely outside the top 10 in overall WAR in the NL. With Tatis down for the count, Alonso is a stone cold lock. The rest is just window dressing. Voters are polled every week. Alonso's pulled away in these polls only very recently. Soroka was a Cy Young candidate for most of the season. BTW, this piece has Jake deGrom winning the Cy. https://www.nbcsports.com/washington/nationals/evaluating-state-2019-mlb-awards-races-september-updatehttps://www.nbcsports.com/washington/nationals/evaluating-state-2019-mlb-awards-races-september-update

  11. Big day here at Typewriter Chewing Gum, makers of the finest Batman-Mets cards in the whole wide world. And after yesterday's glorious Mets win -- beating their wild card DBack rivals while Jake deGrom advanced his Cy Young award case and Pete the Polar Bear Alonso smashed not one but two round-trippers to put him on pace to not just tie, but to set the all-time single season rookie HR record - well nobody's giving up today. So to celebrate, we've got a tweak for Tweaky Tuesday, and a makeover for Makeover Monday -- plus another tweak -- a bonus to match Alonso's bonus homer. So first up is Tomas Nido. This is a tweak of a tweak. We've darkened the background slightly and then yellowed up Robin's yellow cape some more so as not to lose Robin's cape to the background, sharpened Nido's catcher's mitt and put some stitches on that baseball Nido just hurled. You can even see the red color on those stitches now. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48706713617_3f86d77406_c.jpg> https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48669401491_cd701ebccd_c.jpg> Next up is shirtless Michael Conforto. Do you think Nats fans gave up when they blew a seemingly untouchable ninth inning lead to the NY Mets? https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48706713647_3d55bb8edd_c.jpg> https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48512296787_c2abb5784b_c.jpg> And finally, old friend Wilmer Flores gets the makeover treatment. His new card features the star of the third series -- Batgirl. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48710506383_5bd652ae81_c.jpg> https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48401342461_c43b7a01dd_c.jpg>

(If you subscribe, read it; if you don't subscribe and can swing it, subscribe -- over a year's time, it's tantamount to buying the paper every day in olden days.) By "olden days", I hope you mean like when a paper used to cost 10 cents. I've been on the fence about subscribing to The Athletic for a while now. I've already come across too many Athletic articles on the web that I wanted to read but couldn't because I'm not a subscriber. Your post may have pushed me over that fence.
  17. We've got a special Batman card just for youse. It'll go down as a historical card in our Batman Mets 2019 series. Why, youse ask? Because it's part of the base set; it's not an insert or a subset -- and yet it features no Mets player. Look high and low and all over the place -- use your Bat-o-Scope if youse wanna -- but you won't find anyone on that card who ever played for the New York Mets. How's that possible, youse wanna know, this being a Mets baseball card set as much as it's a Batman card set? It's all about Bill James's Power/Speed Number. Stay with me. The Power/Speed Number -- Bill James's harmonic mean for measuring how well a player does, collectively, at hitting home runs and stealing bases. Collectively being the operative word, because a player has to do well in both categories to score high on the Power/Speed number. Ol' friend Frank Howard could've led the AL in HR's from here to eternity, but with half the speed of Wilson Ramos and never more than one stolen base in any season, ol' Hondo wasn't gonna score much in Power/Speed. Ya gotta excel in both categories to score impressively in Power/Speed. Now we here at Typewriter Chewing Gum are immersed in Mets history and Batman. And we got to thinking, who's got the best, the most significant connections to both the Mets and the Batman universe, with special focus on the Batman TV show that ran from 1966-1968? With emphasis on the word "both". That means no Zsa Zsa Gabor, who, despite playing the super-villainess Minerva on what turned out to be the series' final episode, couldn't care less about baseball and had no meaningful, or any real connection to the New York Mets, as far as we know. See where we're going? We're looking for someone who'd score high on the Power/Speed number for our Batman Mets cards. And we think we've found the Batman/Mets Power/Speed champ. And we've got a card featuring the Batman/Mets Power/Speed champ. Tune in tomorrow. Same Bat-Thread. Today's brand new card release features the Power/Speed champ of the Batman/Mets universe. But wouldn't you know it, as this card was in development, we here at Typewriter thought of yet another candidate who might vie for the Power/Speed championship of the Batman/Mets universe. This means that there'll be a future card coming, along the lines of today's release -- which won't settle the question of who's the Power/Speed champ of the Batman/Mets universe but at least youse'll have some more eye candy to eyeball while the Mets fade and Pete Alonso hasn't hit a homer in what's goddamn ages for him -- about three games. And while it's true, just like we said, that you won't find anyone who ever played for the Mets on this card, we didn't say anything about Mets royalty. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48706213043_a62a2b8301_c.jpg>
  18. DeGrom effectively came from behind last year, which, like his scant win total, made the award all the more remarkable. Scherzer was the consensus favorite at midseason. Tough to argue with a 1.70 ERA. Jake is at that level, I'd think, where voters might look at nobody being the obvious choice and deciding you can't go wrong with this guy. Don't look now but Jacob deGrom, right now, has the highest score among NL pitchers on Tom Tango's Cy Young award predictor. And why do they say don't look now when they really mean "look now"? 20. My big bottom of the ninth worry was that Alonso would hit a grand slam and Todd Pratt, in the house, would run onto the field and mug Alonso at second base, depriving him of a statistical home run.

  22. Yesterday's Abbey Road 50th Anniversary release announcement got us here at Typewriter Chewing Gum in our own 1969 50th anniversary mood. And what a year that was. Beginning with Led Zeppelin's album debut and a Jets Super Bowl victory and ending with an at their peak Rolling Stones free concert at the Altamont Raceway that was, albeit, marred by just a few minor fracases. And we've got another Batman69 insert to fill our '69 jones. (We should've saved that Jones line for the release of a Batman69 Cleon Jones card, which is coming in the future what with the Mets nailing down three all star roster spots in 1969, including Jonesie the batting title contender. We'll hafta work on our timing a bit.) And not just any old insert card, but an insert within an insert. That's right. Batman69 inserts meet our All-Star cards inserts today, as we take you back to RFK Stadium for the 1969 All-Star Game, featuring that year's big deal, Ted Williams, who put on a baseball uniform once again to manage the host city's Washington Senators, (old friend Frank Howard homered before the home town crowd in that year's mid-summer classic). It's Jerry Koosman's Batman69 All-star card. And check out the fancy embossing on this doozy. Raised bat logos and stars and lettering. We went all out and spared no expenses on this card, which, embossing wise, was inspired by the White Album cover, speaking of the Beatles. Of course, "all-star card" designation prevents us from selling that card stateside. Contracts. Test market. Latin America. Youse know the drill. Lucky youse have me, though, to give youse a sneak peek so's youse don't have to travel to Mexico to buy this baby, where in 1969, Americans took their kiddies there for family vacations and spent their honeymoons there in places like Acapulco and Cancun. Today, though, to tell you the truth, and don't tell anyone I told youse so, I don't think even Batman and Robin would wanna step foot there. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48689659836_124464af7d_c.jpg>
  23. On the same day that the Beatles 50th Anniversary release of Abbey Road is announced, we've got just the tweak for youse on Tweaky Thursday. It's too bad that we thought of that Beatles bit that's taking place behind Corey Oswalt before we thought to produce Batman69 inserts. What a lost opportunity. But we've got some Batman69 insert surprises coming your way real soon. Which reminds me, where did that Fonebone feller go off to? We're still wondering whether he'd like to see league leader cards -- excuse me, --"Rooks"-- from the 2018 season or from this season?
