  1. I'd do this trade for Conforto plus their choice of any pitcher whose last name has ten letters or fewer. I usually don't like big contracts unless (a) the player isn't some aging slugger or speed demon who has a good probability of turning the last few years of the contract into a major albatross, a la Reyes, Howard, and Pujols and ( the player can transform a pretty good team to one of the best in the majors. It's not worth the big bucks and commitment to turn a last place team into a third place team. But, whaddya know, (a) and ( both apply here. And 5 years/$138M isn't all that yuge for arguably the best player in the majors, and someone who would fit well into the Mets' lineup if Conforto were part of the trade. Conforto and Matz are both likely to become really good players for a really long time. But it's a good bet that their combined value won't ever approach Trout's. And, sure, they're bargains, but the Mets have plenty of bargains right now. I like to think that they can take on one more big contract (yeah, I know, Wilpons...but one can dream, right?). As far as a lefty starter to replace Matz in the rotation, Sean Gilmartin is currently 4-1, 2.48 in the PCL. He's no Matz, but he'll do.
  2. 7) Which five Hall-of-Famers gave up homers to Mets pitchers? We're running out of Hall of Famers. Drysdale and Smoltz?
  3. Yeah, I looked them up after I guessed. None of them homered as Mets, and Astacio never homered at all.
  4. 9) What is the Mets winning percentage in games when they enjoy a pitcher homer? Ya gotta believe that if even the pitchers are homering, it's usually a good day. .750. 16) Who are the only three players to hit a homer as a Mets pitcher and give up a homer TO a Mets pitcher? Astacio, Sadecki, Hampton. One Rockie, one good hitter, one good hitter who was also a Rockie.

  8. It doesn't get any more eponymous than Bartolo Colon in San Diego on May 7.
  9. While the NL standings are surprising nobody, the AL is upside down. The Astros, who were a lock to win the West, are in last place, 7 1/2 out. The Central was supposed to be a tossup between the Indians and Royals, currently in a virtual tie for second at a game over .500 and 5 1/2 games behind the White Sox. In the East, the Blue Jays (4th place) were a sure thing, and the first-place Orioles were supposed to be the worst team in the AL. The Orioles are starting to slump, and they probably won't be in first place for long.
  10. 13-2 Nationals, bottom of the 7th. Murphy is A Triple Short of the Cycle, including a homer off Dillon Gee.
  11. I'm feeling optimistic about this game.
  12. Matt Wisler, whose ERA last year was 2.14 against the Mets and 5.32 against everyone else, goes up against Matt Harvey in a Battle of the Matts.
  13. Promising young pitcher Mike Foltynewicz goes up against promising old pitcher Bartolo Colon. Hijinks ensue.

He has hit .407 (according to SNY) since he has been inserted into the third spot in the lineup. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Later I have no problem with giving Conforto a seat once in a while, even if he's been mashing lately. Occasional rests are good things. An outfield of Cespedes-Lagares-Granderson doesn't exactly suck. Conforto has benefited from facing almost all righties; he's only 3-12 on the season against lefties. I didn't get leaving Wright and Plawecki in for the full 9 innings of that 13-1 game, either.
  15. Surprised to see RA as high as he is. He's been about as average as can be since going to Toronto. Though he's consistently been near the top of the league in innings pitched, which may get him some points in James' formula.

So for a good 12 hours - until I read this morning that they scored 11 in an inning against the Cubs at Wrigley in '06 - I was certain I was the only person to be in attendance at all three games where the Mets scored in double digits in one inning. Alas it is not so, however at least I can say that is true for home games. We need to take up a collection to send you to more games.
  18. Buster Posey had dinner at American Cut last night. Although he was a rookie phenom just last week, he turned 29 in March and is now starting his seventh season. Bruce Bochy is already talking about limiting his time at catcher. He's off to a not awful but un-Poseylike .264/.325/.417 start.
  19. Is something up with the audio? I'm watching on the MLB.tv feed and can't hear the announcers, though I can hear the fans.

  21. HOLY CRAP! Cspedes!
  22. Conforto. Still unstoppable.
  23. Yeah. Matz has shown he can hit so far. No need to bunt here.
  24. This is fun.
