  1. Again, tough to argue that George was deserving.
  2. Yancy Street Gang wrote: I remember Carter bunting for a hit once or twice when the third baseman was playing deep. Oh, I remember that. I think one time Mookie scored from second on one of his bunts. And Carter pretended to call his shot right before bunting. It was great.
  3. I think I could hit a golf ball over the left field wall with my putter.
  4. Speaking of fist pumps, SNY is running a commercial now (I think for Mets tickets) featuring highlights from the year. One of them is of Glavine, walking off the mound, doing a fist pump. (I think it's the Sunday night MFY game reacting to a double play). Anyway, the clip is hilarious. It shows Glavine getting excited, pumping his fist, then, as if suddenly remembering he is in public, abrubtly regaining his composure and returning to his stoic face. Classic.
  5. For what it's worth, this thread, as the title suggests, is a good way to keep track of standings throughout the year. The magic number part is just and added bonus (or drawback depending on your point of view). My feeling on this is simple. If we win the division, this countdown will be fun, and I'll be glad Yancy did it. If we don't win the division and fall short, this thread will make me want to hurl.
  6. Not for nothing, but it's not as if Milledge is on some sort of tear. He looks like he has promise, but he's only hitting .255 with 2 HR's. Not bad, but not exactly setting the world on fire.
  7. I've seen the prequels a few times. Sure, the dialogue is bad, and the directing was probably worse, but there is no excuse for those performances. Her "romantic" scenes with Anakin...they're unspeakably bad. As far as peaking, I haven't seen a lot of the stuff on that list, but from what I remember, she was ok in Garden State. Awful in Closer.
  8. Caught this one on TV the other day. Every time I see it, I end up watching at least part of it. At least among people I know, Beautiful Girls usually elicits a strong reaction, whether it be positive or negative. Personally, I really like the movie. I know the acting isn’t great, and it becomes more apparent when you re-watch it, and guys I know from New England tell me that the cast is about as non-New England as you can get. I don’t know...maybe it was because I saw this movie for the first time right before I got married...but whatever, it works for me. Couple of cool things from the movie: 1. Like I mentioned, because of my situation, I could relate to Timothy Hutton’s character, but I could also see a lot of my friends in his friends. And now, as time goes by, I see some of me in those other characters too. I love the scene where Michael Rappaport has the brown (“champagne
  9. Never in doubt. SC=Beltran BA on this road trip.
  10. If they put Cliff on the DL and retro him, I think they should really wait until the 12 or 13th day so we can be shorthanded for as long as possible. For the life of me I can't remember the last time a team had so many "To DL or not to DL" issues before.

  12. D'oh. Nothing to see here. Move along.
  13. There was one Cobra Kai, who apologized to Daniel immediately after pulling a dirty move on him. On Edit: It was Bobby. Immediately preceding their fight, Kreese and Bobby have this exchange: Kreese: Bobby. I want him out of commission Bobby: But Sensei I can beat this guy. Kreese: I don't want him beaten. Bobby: But I'll be disqualified. Kreese: Out of commission. Bobby then proceeds to put Daniel out of commission (or so we think) by attacking his leg. As soon as he does it, he apologizes to Daniel as Daniel is being taken away. I forget if he's around during the last fight with Johnny, but you have to think Bobby was about done with Cobra Kai even before the crane showed up. Tommy is the insensitive one calling for a body bag. He, along with Dutch, are the biggest jerks of the group. Tommy is also memorable for delivering the worst insult in movie history. During the "hands-off" training period, a frustrated Tommy yells "Must be take a worm for a walk week" upon seeing Ali hanging with Daniel.
  14. I'm not sure if this is being discussed in another thread (if it is I apologize) but I couldn't help but notice today's covers while sitting on the train: For the record, I don't think it means much...and the cover doesn't happen unless it's an off-day for both the Mets and Yanks with no NBA Finals. But it's interesting that all three rags went with the same idea. I don't buy that the Mets are necessarily better right now simply because they are hotter at the moment. Nor do I discount how much baseball is left to be played. But I do love how paranoid this will make Yankee fans. This morning, the people sitting across for me were reading them right next to each other. I can only imagine what it must be like for a Yankee fan to see something like this.
  15. If Doc Brown knew Carlos Beltran, he wouldn't have needed to hook up the Delorian to the clock tower. Even his checkswings generate 1.21 jigowatts. If Carlos Beltran had been cast as Rick Blaine, Ingrid Bergman would still be in Paris. If Carlos Beltran had played Stallone's character in Cliffhanger, Sarah would be alive and well. Carlos Beltran knew Donnie Brasco was a rat. Just when Carlos Beltran thinks he's out, they can't pull him back in. Carlos Beltran wouldn't have run from the giant ball like Indiana Jones. He would have picked it up and thrown out the runner trying to go first to third.
  16. Yes, the R2-D2 one makes sense too. In essence, you're saying Carlos Beltran is tough like a wookie, but smarter than one. All kidding aside, I remember as kids we used to get into some heated arguments about Star Wars. Before Jedi, the Great Lando Debates (good guy or bad?) nearly divided the kids on the block.
  17. Wow, you're such a nerd. You take Star Wars like, way too seriously.
  18. Elster88 wrote: ="seawolf17"]Elster88 wrote: ="Centerfield"]When they play space chess, Chewbacca lets Carlos Beltran win. Not that he needs to, because Beltran would win anyway. I think you mean R2-D2. No, because I think the whole point is that Beltran defies the "Let the wookie win" truism. I have no idea what that means. But here's a better explanation of what I was saying: R2-D2 lets Chewbacca win because he's afraid of getting his arms torn off. R2-D2 doesn't need to let Beltran win because Beltran would win anyway. Beating a robot in chess is hard, but Beltran can do it, so my idea was that CF meant to say "R2-D2 lets Carlos Beltran win." Elementary. What I meant: You let wookies win because wookies are tough and will tear your arms off if you beat them. Carlos Beltran is so tough a wookie will let him win for fear an angry Beltran will tear his arms off. The last sentence notes that the wookie's fears are a moot point because said wookie couldn't beat Beltran at space chess even if he tried. I'm thinking soupcan might be right.
  19. Matsui! And before that, Reyes!
  20. When Yoda has questions about the Force, he asks Carlos Beltran. If Carlos Beltran lived on Tatooine, Anakin Skywalker would have been "that other guy". When they play space chess, Chewbacca lets Carlos Beltran win. Not that he needs to, because Beltran would win anyway. If Princess Leia had asked Carlos Beltran for help instead of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Star Wars would have been a movie-short instead of a trilogy. Carlos Beltran is so good, not even George Lucas can ruin him. When light speed just isn't fast enough, Han Solo asks Carlos Beltran to get out and push. Carlos Beltran could have gotten 10 thousand for Luke's speeder. If Storm Troopers had been cloned from Carlos Beltran, they would have destroyed the Emperor and Darth Vader and taken over the universe. Carlos Beltran knows Princess Leia loves him. If Carlos Beltran had been in the Prequel Trilogy, they wouldn't have sucked. Actually, take that back....even Carlos Beltran can only do so much.
  21. This is really scary. When the Mets were looking to sweep the Phils at home a few weeks ago, I wanted to start an IGT making a Cobra Kai reference. I was looking for a good picture of Kreese yelling and caption it "Phinish him!" I couldn't find a pic though. And hence, I didn't start the IGT. I also looked for a pic of the scene where he wipes Johnny's blood away so I could caption it "Sweep the Phils. Do you have a problem with that Mr. Lawrence?" Couldn't find one of those either.
  22. Frayed Knot wrote: Sometimes a good year (or good stretch) is just a good year and a bad year is nothing more than a bad year. As fans and observers we have a tendancy to assign absolute cause-and-effect reasons for it but that doesn't neccessarily make it so. Yup. If we're doing cause and effect, we have to explain why Delgado's presence relaxes Beltran but is clearly irking Cliff Floyd.
  23. Red Sox David Ortiz involved in sweets scandal.FEDS RAID HOME OF SOX' ORTIZ Discover stash of Hostess, Entenmann’s By Centerfield CPF SPORTS Federal agents raided the home of Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz yesterday, seeking evidence that could identify him as a distributor and abuser of sweets and dessert cakes. Commercially manufactured desserts, which are undetectable in urine tests, have recently been added to the list of barred substances pursuant to the latest collective bargaining agreement. Baseball officials refused to comment last night, it is believed that the agents discovered a large stash of Twinkies, Ho-Ho’s and Frosted Mini-Donuts. It is unclear whether the desserts were intended for Ortiz’ personal consumption, or for distribution to other players. One agent, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said that the raid was the culmination of an ongoing investigation. “The federal government is not going to stand idly by and allow public figures such as Ortiz to corrupt our children. If baseball isn’t going to crack down and self-police, the government will make sure someone does.” The agent said that the sports world has made it far too acceptable to abuse dessert cakes and cookies. “The message that it sends is that it’s ok...and we can’t allow that to continue. Many of these athletes eat these desserts right out in the open, and oftentimes before dinner. The sugar in these products can be so damaging to a players’ teeth...and I don’t even want to think about what it can do to your appetite.” It is unknown at this time, whether Ortiz dealt directly with manufacturers, or whether he was dealing with intermediary food distributors such as Sysco, or IFDA. “We will take down the entire network,” the agent promised. “It doesn’t end here.” The raid concludes the investigation into Ortiz, but the fallout will probably be felt for months. It is believed that when Ortiz was first confronted by agents in April, according to documents, he named names. Though those names have not been released, players linked to these investigations include the Dodgers’ Olmedo Saenz, as well as Ortiz’s teammate David Wells. Ortiz, who had been hitting .265 with 18 home runs, finished second in the American League MVP voting in 2005.
