  1. To all you Mothers out there.
  2. That's why Dynasties are hard. The Big Red Machine is the obvious challenge here, but only 2 championships? No dynasty by my standards.
  3. At least 3 championships in five years. (strong showings in the others) There should be at least one year where they obliterated the competition. At some point, people have to say "The ____ again? That's boring. They always win." There should be a lack of a strong rival during that time. (So for instance, the Celtics and Lakers in the 80's would better be defined as a rivalry instead of a dynasty.)
  4. I would hate to be Stephen Drew this week. "Hey any more offers come in?" Who fucking cares? Ralph Kiner just died. Show some respect. "Um. Ok."

Most of us can write at least a little. A lot of good voices here, and Centerfield is certainly not the least in that regard. Thanks Edgy. I was just impressed the way Greg captured that moment. It was perfect. Not to take anything away from the rest of the forum. We're fucking awesome. And I can write sometimes some ok stuff good too.

Suddenly Tim was respectful, humble and not at all douchy for those few innings. Just like magic Tim was likeable again. Remember that brief reunion well; wrote about it at the time here. Kenny Albert was the announcer who pulled back and let Ralph and Tim be Ralph and Tim. Perhaps never was the phrase "the magic is back" more apropos. Greg, wow thanks for linking that. That was spot on. I think that's why that day resonates with us. That was the last time (and first time in years) we had the pleasure of listening to real Ralph. Thanks for capturing that moment for us. Man it must be nice to be a good writer.
  7. "One wonderful man," Tim McCarver once said. "Any group of people is better off if Ralph joins." Ironic that this comes from Tim. I grew up on McCarver and Kiner. I thought the two were great. After the duo were no longer a team, I couldn't believe how douchy Tim became. (Ralph on the other hand was great whereever he went.) I just assumed Tim had become too full of himself and gotten out of control. Then a few years ago, they had Ralph visit the Fox booth. Joe Buck took a back seat. McCarver switched to play-by-play, and Ralph provided the color. Suddenly Tim was respectful, humble and not at all douchy for those few innings. Just like magic Tim was likeable again. I know that Ralph accomplished a lot, and everyone will talk about them. Dating Janet Leigh, all the HR's, etc. But for me, it was this. Thanks Ralph for making McCarver not an unbearable douche during my childhood.
  8. This is really a sad day for the Mets and all of baseball. I don't care that he was 91. He should have lived to 250 if it were up to me. He is a voice from my childhood and I will always appreciate him helping me fall in love with baseball. Don't know that I've done a lot right in my life but taking my not yet two year old son to Ralph Kiner night for his first trip to Shea is right up there in my list of accomplishments. Good night Ralph. We will miss you greatly.
  9. Topless cheerleaders.
  10. CPF would like to name Edgy MD as "Best Poster Sitting in his Chair." Well deserved Edgy. Well deserved.
  11. I don't really understand why the Red Sox would want him. Don't they have that prospect Bogaerts ready to slot in at SS?
  12. It just boggles my mind that with SS up in the air like this that we would non-tender Justin Turner. Whatever.

If he sucks, cut him and call up Duda. If he's good, keep him and hope Duda raises his trade value while in AAA. I think that makes sense. (I'd include Satin among the fallback options too.) The only thing is, I'd give Ike a lot less rope than he's received in the last two seasons. Certainly on this. No way we can have him suck for an entire half-season. Especially in a season where we are hoping to be in the mix. I think if he goes 0 for April again, we can declare the Davis era officially over.

  15. All kidding aside, I wonder what effect Matsuzaka's bad contract will have on Tanaka. At the time, Matsuzaka was supposed to be every bit at good as this guy, and it was evident as soon as he came over (even while winning) that there were a lot of holes in Dice-K's game.
  16. Edgy MD wrote: It'd be nice. But historically, it's hard to say how many top-dollar postees this side of Ichiro have been worth it. Pitchers are fragile, their success is ephemeral, and Japanese pitchers come with whatever mileage they come with. That hurts man. I mean, do you not remember the last four starts that closed out my season? I'm just sayin' is all.
  17. This is a smart policy. If I were a pro athlete I can see myself doing the same thing. Jeter is great at protecting his brand. You will never see him tweet something idiotic. Of course, he's still an overrated ass that deserves to catch an STD.
  18. Andy Martino last night on Mets Hot Stove said that this makes the Mets a contender, at least for a wild card spot. I'm not sure if I'd go that far, but if it turns out that he's right, then the second year may just be the price that you pay for the first year. And who knows? Maybe he'll be pitching for the Mets in the 2015 World Series. It helps, but the thing that makes this team into a contender is more about Wheeler being awesome and the pitching staying healthy, coupled with some or all of Tejada rebounding, Ike rebounding for a full season, d'Arnaud being better than average, and such. New rules for this season: 1. No getting hurt 2. Everyone must play to full, or exceed, potential 3. Get lucky
  19. Oh. Jonathan Mayo said cash on Twitter.
  20. Selected in the Rule 5 Draft. Traded to LA for cash. I'm trying to figure out how I can get pick in the Rule 5 Draft so I can trade him for money.
  21. I've never really understood the logic behind blocking the plate being legal. No third baseman ever tries to block a runner from reaching third. It's odd that one set of rules applies for the bases, then suddenly at home the game turns into football. I think the rule change would be pretty simple. Any catcher without the ball that comes into contact with a runner is called for obstruction. Any catcher, even with the ball, that intentionally tries to impede a runner's progress to the plate, should be called for obstruction. Any runner intentionally running into a catcher who has the ball in an attempting to dislodge said ball should be out. Bill Murray can play tough guy all he wants, but it's well past time to start taking concussions seriously. No athlete should have to live with an [u:1iu1tv7n]unnecessary [/u:1iu1tv7n]risk of concussion as part of the game. No matter how well paid they are.
  22. I'll state the obvious, the second year hurts. I think we get a good half season out of him during these two years. Hopefully it comes in the second half of 2014 so we can trade him this time next year when we are wondering what to do with all this pitching...
  23. ...he ate all the Chuck Norris jokes. That's why you don't hear them anymore.
