  1. Philly has Nola and Harper locked up long term. Anything can happen, but they have a good chance to be good for a long time. This is shitty.
  2. A few nuggets of information for those still mulling candidates. It's tempting to pick new additions since we haven't seen them suck, and we are always hopeful for them. But chances are that the DHM is already in the organization. And chances are he's a pitcher. And probably white. Prior DHM's off the top of my head. 2011: RA Dickey. 11-9. 2.84 ERA 2012: Scott Hairston. 20 HRs. .803 OPS. 2013: Marlon Byrd. 848 OPS. 2014: Jacob deGrom 2016: Robert Gsellman and Seth Lugo (co-DHMs) 2018: Jeff McNeil And of course, the first one I remember, 1987 Terry Leach.
  3. 35 wins. 1.32 ERA. 0.578 WHIP. Write that shit down.
  4. Edgy MD wrote: Living right on the edge of the expecteds and the dark horses, infield and outfield (and pitcher), J.D. Davis is the perfect choice here, but I want my own pony so I'll look elsewhere. Are Broxton and Lagares eligible? What the hey? I'll take P.J. Conlon. The JD Davis thread prompted this one. I'm not sure on Broxton and Lagares. As of now, one of them is slated to be the starter, so it's hard to call either of them a Dark Horse. I'd lean towards excluding them. Particularly Lagares. Dark Horses usually don't pull down $9 million.
  5. Hey, did you predict great things for Jacob deGrom in February of 2014? Did you buy stock in Lugo and Gsellman prior to the 2016 season? Then this is the thread for you! Take me for instance. I predicted prior to Spring Training 2018 that a forgotten second-base prospect would kill it in 2018 and eventually take over for Cabrera mid-season. Sure, I thought it would be Gavin Cecchini instead of Jeff McNeil, but since I got the position right, I think I should get partial credit. Here are the rules. 1. It must be someone who is not on anyone's reasonable radar for this year. So "I think this is the year Michael Conforto puts it all together" is not an acceptable answer. Neither are top prospects on the doorstep that we expect/hope will contribute. So Peter Alonso, get the fuck outta here. The more obscure the better. 2. Contributions must be made at the Major League level. It's fine if you think Simeon Woods-Richardson will catapult to the top of Keith Law's list, but unless he makes contributions in 2019 as a Met, it doesn't count. Feel free to start your own "Dark Horse Prospect" thread. 3. I'm ok with former top prospects who have fallen from grace. So, if a few years ago, you said Dominic Smith, you would have been disqualified. But with all the 1B options now, and Dom basically an afterthought, he's an ok pick. So is former to prospect Bill Pulsipher, if you're inclined to go that route. So what say you CPF? Who is our Dark Horse Met? Does Ryder Ryan save the day? Is this the breakout year for Dilson Herrera? Are we sipping champagne in October toasting Gregor Blanco? Give me your predictions NOW!!!!

  8. We are in the early stages of mapping out a possible three city road trip over Easter. The tentative plan is this: Friday, April 19: Fly into Cleveland. Arrive midday. Friday night go to Braves vs. Indians. Root actively for the Indians. Bundle up. Saturday, April 20: Tour Cleveland. See the R&R HOF. I've heard that there are some good river tours. Sunday, April 21: Wake up early and drive to Detroit. 1:10 game White Sox at Tigers. Dinner in Detroit. Monday, April 22: Definitely want to hit the Motown Museum. Was thinking to take a tour of the GM plant but not sure if this is too much for one day. That afternoon, we drive to Toronto. Tuesday, April 23: Tour Toronto. Check out the CN tower. 7:07, watch Giants at Blue Jays. Root for the Blue Jays. Wednesday, April 24: Fly home. 6 days, three cities, three stadiums. It's a bit ambitious, but the kids are young only once, so why the hell not. Here's where I need your help CPF, I need recommendations for food, tours, places to stay. We're open to anything and everything, but we would definitely like to get a small taste of these cities while we are there. I'll likely have my in-laws in tow, and they're not baseball fans, so most likely we'll be sending them to fancy restaurants while we pig out at the ballparks.
  9. I watched the first few innings. When Tebow dropped that ball in the first inning I was positive, POSITIVE, that someone here would have posted that the ground can't cause a fumble. Disappointed guys. Come on. It's February. Get into playing shape.
  10. A Boy Named Seo wrote: But practical changes like raising the minimum salary, letting players get to arbitration and free agency earlier also make sense (for the players). If you're not Bryce Harper, you get paid shit through pre-arb and arb, then then might get ignored for another guy getting paid shit when you finally hit FA. Maybe also a minimum salary floor, or requiring that all revenue sharing be re-invested in scouting, player development, or player acquisition (no personal debt, off-field expenses). All of these should be on the table, and I believe they will be, for the next CBA. I wonder if the flipping of draft order is something that could get done even beforehand. Would the owners come out publicly against such an idea? It would be awful tough. "No, we'd like to continue to reward tanking." I don't know how realistic this is, but another idea is to make sure that the PA has some say in the appointment of the commissioner. Having the owners' stooge running the show isn't exactly great for the players. All this pace of play garbage. One thing never, ever mentioned is fewer commercials.
  11. Marwin Gonzalez was like this year's version of Josh Harrison. Maybe a little better as a hitter. Feel like his versatility made him seem like a better catch than what he was.
  12. Agreed. In fact that might be the most difficult fix. But rearrange the draft. So simple.
  13. The easiest fix in the world.
  14. Kimbrel too, if his price is falling.
  15. Early reports are that his defense is much improved.
  16. Good news for Lowrie. Nothing structural. They'll bring him along slowly.
  17. A 97 MPH fastball at the armpits is impossible to hit with any sort of authority.
  18. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: =dgwphotography post_id=3250 time=1550780505 user_id=78] I think he'll bust out with a complete year. I think he rushed back too soon last year, and that was a contributing factor in his rough start. .310 33 95 wouldn't we love to see that. hes my Key Guy for the Mets this year,; dunno if he has it in him to be awesome for 6 months in a row but if does, look out.
  19. For the record, I'm on board with you. With Lugo at least. I think Gsellman hasn't shown he's worth of a rotation spot. If they didn't want to go with Keuchel or even someone lower end with upside like Anibal Sanchez, then a move could have been made to free up Lugo and bring him back into the rotation.
  20. Edgy MD wrote: As for Gsellman and or Lugo, if one of them can be effective in the rotation, please, pull him out of the pen.
  21. Thread title could also apply to Detroit's signing of Josh Harrison, an apple of the Mets' offseason eye last year. Josh Harrison should be Exhibit A for the "speed, defense and versatility" crowd. Get me the guy who can hit. To think some were ok with giving up Nimmo for Harrison.
  22. Options for 6th Starter: Gsellman and Lugo. Sure. But that takes away from the pen. Corey Oswalt. 5.85 ERA. 1.38 WHIP. Chris Flexen. 12.79 ERA. 3.15 WHIP. Walker Lockett. 9.60 ERA. 2.133 WHIP. (Minor league ERA 4.15 and WHIP 1.291) Kyle Dowdy. 5.15 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in 124 innings last season between Double-A and Triple-A. And maybe someone we're not considering. Dave Peterson or Thomas Szapucki or someone. And sure, I guess any one of these guys could break out. But to rely on that?
  23. Edgy MD wrote: I don't think the Mets have opted for B. What have they opted for?
  24. Sure. It would be nice for Vargas (and every other starter) to remain healthy. But they won't. Vargas himself has only been healthy one out of the last four seasons. He's averaging 16 starts per year during that time. And he's now 36 years old. So given the choice of (a) sign a quality pitcher understanding that pitchers get hurt and 6-7 guys will typically make a good number of starts, and ( just hope everyone stays healthy, I'd vote for (a).
  25. ...like now. Nothing serious, but something that puts him out for a week. And maybe Matz to get like a papercut or something too. I feel like Brodie needs to understand how thin this rotation is and make a move before the other starters get swooped up.
