Smith had Harris struck out there, and the ump blew it. Single on next pitch. 2 on 2 out with Nieves coming up.

Yay Cubbies! Brewers with a blown lead to rival any Met blown lead this year.

Also, wasn't Marlon Anderson a second baseman in another life? Actually, wasn't he a professional hitter in a different life?

With every HR, water sprays from the Baptismal font.

="Benjamin Grimm"]If the season were to end with the standings as they are, the Mets would play the Dodgers in the NLDS while the Phillies would take on the Cubs. Home field advantages would go to Los Angeles and Chicago. Wouldn't the Mets (or whoever the East champ is) have home field by virtue of better record than LA?

I can't believe I'm saying it, but Castillo. He did get on base twice the other night, despite limping around like Fred Sanford.

Elster88 wrote: ="HahnSolo"]There was an article a few weeks back (Rubin in the Daily News, maybe?) that said Mookie and Davey were not likely to be there. Did it say why? For Mookie I think it was a falling out with the organization (over his no longer coaching, maybe?). Don't remember about Davey.

    Never in doubt.

    Unearned runs. Thanks David.

And a nice pick by Feliciano to get the second out.

Nice play by Delgado. And shouldnt AndyHernandy have made that closer?

    Ugly, lazy throw at that.

Forty-five, if I've counted correctly from the UMDB necrology, are no longer with us. A few dozen from '62 and '63 never played at Shea. Maybe a few more only played road games after '64. Ex-Mets in other uniforms and therefore working that day as players, coaches and managers must total, I don't know, a few more dozen. Seems to me 45, other than for the significance of total number of seasons at Shea, is a little low. You're right. I missed that on first read. Maybe they figure with 45 guys they can be done by 5PM and save money on turning the lights on.

Instead of Heilman, can we put 10 defensive players out there and let them hit off a tee?

He played hard and capably in positions he was not familiar with. And he did it like a player who had to give his all just to stay on the ball club. Not a lot of 30+ year old guys with his career would be willing to do that. Oh, and he had some monster hits for this team. If he never plays for the Mets again I wish him well in his church-building endeavors.

    Guessing Gabe Kapler.

="Benjamin Grimm"]Some scoop on the Shea closing ceremonies, from the New York Times: ="RICHARD SANDOMIR"]After the Florida-Mets afternoon game on Sept. 28, the Mets plan to bring back 45 former players, including Tom Seaver and Mike Piazza, for a celebration called Shea Goodbye. Dave Howard, the Mets executive vice president for business, said, We think most of the names that come to mind will be there. Howard offered few other details. He said fireworks were possible, but construction at Citi Field next door might pose a roadblock. It may also prevent the team from doing something spectacular, like lighting up the unfinished ballpark. Lighting up Citi Field is an interesting idea, but I cant say its feasible, he said. The Mets have already announced plans with the MeiGray Group to sell artifacts from Shea Stadium, with the city retaining 70 percent of the proceeds and the rest going to the Mets Foundation. Mookie, Kingman, and Davey come to mind. don't think they'll be there.

I assume we put Murphy in left in the 2 hole and drop Church down.

I think they need to put a few more signs up. No one will ever know what the place is called.

Gwreck wrote: Yawn. This is not 2007. The Mets have not been in first place all season. First place has gone back and forth and neither the Mets nor the Phillies have had a lead of more than 3 games since before the All-Star break. This isn't a collapse, it's a pennant race. And we're behind by half a game. Sheesh. This is actually reminding me more of the near-collapse of '99. When we blew the wild card lead, then needed to sweep the Pirates just to qualify for the one-game playoff.
