  1. I think you have to be careful about overpaying for a career year in Castro's case, especially since he was awful last year. The Cubs just got a prospect of comparable value to Syndegaard for two starting pitchers, one of whom (Samardzija) is more valuable than Castro right now. Having said that, Castro is 24, his career norm is an improvement over what we've got, his contract is lengthy but not burdensome, and he could probably switch to second and do just fine if you don't like his glove at short (which has been consistently below average but not brutally so). I wouldn't go all in for him, but I'd talk to the Cubs for sure.

In hindsight, it's easier to build a team up to elite status from scratch than it is to keep it elite for a long period of time. Hell, he might fared better in the long run by ripping the team up and starting over in 1990 or so, but that would have been a tough sell to himself as well as the fans.

Fangraphs gave Oakland's home park a park factor of 92 for home runs (100 being average, higher than that favoring hitters) in 2012 and 2013, with an overall factor of 97. The shortened CitiField has an overall factor of 96, but with a a 103 for home runs (shortening the fences greatly suppressed doubles and triples, according to their ratings). Is anybody complaining about Oakland's fences hurting their team's ability to win? Between Colon's success last year and Kazmir's this year, pitching coach Curt Young should get an acknowledgment as well.

I wouldn't argue with anybody who looked at Victor Zambrano before the trade and saw buy-low potential. I also wouldn't argue with anybody who thought Kazmir's motion gave him a high enough injury risk to justify selling high if an opportunity presented itself, and I don't doubt that Peterson suggested both things at different times to the front office. The problem is that somebody equated the two, and a costly mistake was made. We could argue over whether Duquette came to that conclusion himself or somebody talked him into it, but that dead horse has been beaten enough.

I thought Kazmir was done for a couple of years ago, but it's nice to see him back pitching and pitching well.
  7. Saw both replays. The Wright play was a really bad send with one out. That should be the topic of conversation where that play is concerned. As for the last play, I do agree that Nieuwenhuis could have slid like he meant it, but give credit to Ozuna for a fantastic throw.

  9. It's a good reason not to smash the panic button as hard as you can. A good second half from even one of our guys currently not doing much would go a long way too.
  10. Sometimes life just isn't fair.
  11. Does that answer your question?
  12. I loved it. Best movie I've seen in a while, although I admittedly don't get out to too many.
  13. Ugh. Murphy HAS to catch that throw.
  14. Since EYoung will pinch hit in the pitcher's spot next inning anyway, what is Abreu doing in the field? That double did not need to happen.
  15. Is now a good time to point out that the other team has to hit in the same park that the Mets do when they come here? Or that FanGraphs (you know, the most number-crunchy of the number-cruncher sites) rates CitiField as 103 for favoring home runs since the fences were moved in (100 being average, and above 100 increasing the likelihood of home runs)? Or that the park in Flushing is less of an extreme than the park in the Bronx?
  16. Ultimately he gets to negotiate next year without having to worry about the qualifying offer, so this may yet pay out for Drew. I'm shocked that he couldn't command more than that, draft pick or not, but I moved on a while ago.
  17. Don't be silly. He'd have passed through the concrete wall and made the catch.
  18. Definitely impressed by DeGrom. Did anybody else notice that Tejada held up needlessly on DeGrom's hit? He scores if he judges that better. Murphy and Wright did not play that missed DP with any sense of urgency. Dellin Betances can pitch.

He misses large chunks of several seasons w/the Mets, then goes to StL and hardly misses a game in his mid-30s while getting 650+ PAs/year. Then they let him go and suddenly his knee is barking on him again and there'll be a big chunk blown out of this season and a really big one if surgery is required. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. They got Lance Berkman to play the outfield without a hitch when he couldn't stay healthy as the DH for anybody else he played for after the Astros. Maybe they employ a 12th-level cleric?

Because he's a lefty? (Ducking) Later Lefties are even more overrated than closers. Especially if they have reverse platoon splits and, well, a 2.13 WHIP in AAA.

    BAGB

I meant prioritizing outfield defense ahead of infield defense. A couple of weeks of Duda and Ankiel in the outfield together seemed to give them an epiphany as far as the value of outfield defense goes, and it didn't hurt that the next guy in line for playing time in center was Juan Lagares. But I'm not sure if they place less value on infield defense, or if the opportunity to make changes in the outfield simply happened sooner.

    BAGB

From the Fielding Bible, the Mets have +21 runs saved in the outfield so far this year and -10 every place else. I'm not entirely sure if there is necessarily a strategy in prioritizing the outfield, or if it was simply a case of taking what was available at a reasonable price. The one position in the infield that's a positive is (predictably) third base, and we're set there for a while. The biggest negative is second base, but Murphy's a free agent and that position will be addressed one way or another by next season. Obviously shortstop could have been addressed but wasn't. Alderson decided that Granderson was worth the price and Drew wasn't, and while that could be a case of emphasizing the outfield over the infield, it could also be a case of deciding that Grandy provides a more reliable bat and more defensive value for his position than Drew.
